Hebrew (עִבְרִית, Ivrit, Hebrew pronunciation (help·info)) is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Culturally, it is considered a Jewish language. Hebrew in its modern form is spoken by more than seven million people in Israel while Classical Hebrew has been used for prayer or study in Jewish communities around the world for over two thousand years. It is one of the official languages of Israel, along with Arabic. Ancient Hebrew is also the liturgical tongue of the Samaritans, while modern Hebrew or Palestinian Arabic is their vernacular, though today about 700 Samaritans remain. As a foreign language it is studied mostly by Jews and students of Judaism and Israel, archaeologists and linguists specializing in the Middle East and its civilizations, by theologians, and in Christian seminaries.

The modern word "Hebrew" is derived from the word "ivri" which in turn may be based upon the root "`avar" (עבר) meaning "to cross over". The related name Eber occurs in Genesis 10:21 and possibly means "the one who traverses". In the Bible "Hebrew" is called Yehudith (יהודית) because Judah (Yehuda) was the surviving kingdom at the time of the quotation, late 8th century BCE (Is 36, 2 Kings 18). In Isaiah 19:18, it is also called the "Language of Canaan" (שְׂפַת כְּנַעַן)

The core of the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible) is written in Classical Hebrew, and much of its present form is specifically the dialect of Biblical Hebrew that scholars believe flourished around the 6th century BC, around the time of the Babylonian exile. For this reason, Hebrew has been referred to by Jews as Leshon HaKodesh (לשון הקודש), "The Holy Tongue", since ancient times.

A. There is a grammatical dictionary that gives exactly the kind of information you're looking for : it's "The analytical Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon", by Benjamin Davidson. The subtitle says : "Every word and inflection of the Hebrew Old Testament arranged alphabetically and with grammatical analyses." Hendrickson Publishers, PO box 3473, Peabody, MA 01961-3473. It's a dictionary first published in ... 1848, but regularly reprinted. My copy was issued in 2002. For instance, if you have trouble in understanding such a form as "yissah", wich is clearly a conjugated verb, look at the letter Y, find the form, and the dictionary tells you to what root you'll have to look to find the meaning. Moreover, it'll give you the time, mode, person and… [cont.]

What is the meaning of Nasrani/Nazarene/Netzarim in the hebrew language?
Q. I was just wondering what "Nasrani" meant in the hebrew language? Is it the same as "netzarim"? Did the nasranis and netzari people originate from the same people? Thanks a bunch!

A. Never heard about "nasrani" or "netzari" people. It could have the same origin, as Hebrew 'tz' (Tzadi) is transliterated to Arabic as "Sad" and then when it's back to Hebrew or English it's 's'. The stem "n.tz.r" has the meanings of "keeper" and "scion". It's also the stem of the Hebrew word for Christianity ("Natzrut"), named after Jesus's origin (the city of Natzrat).
