Is a Smog a heterogeneous mixture or a homogeneous mixture?
Q. Basically is a smog a heterogeneous mixture or a homogeneous mixture? Please explain your answer to me so I can choose the best answer.
Asked by livelovelaugh - Tue Oct 21 19:16:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. heterogeneous Obviously it is a mixture. There are 3 types of mixtures, solutions, colloids, and suspensions. Smog is a suspension like salad dressing. A suspension can be filtered with normal means unlike a colloid and a solution. The particles in smog are not spread evenly throughout also unlike a colloid and a solution. Finally, smog will scatter light, common with a colloid but unllike a solution. Again, all suspensions are heterogeneous so that is your answer.

I dont understand difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures?
Q. i dont understand why fog and blood are considered heterogeneous mixtures. its confusing me.
Asked by j - Sat Sep 15 22:28:39 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Heterogeneous means that the mixture has different phases, different parts with distinct physical and chemical properties, while a homogeneous mixture is uniform. The test I tell my students to use is, "Can I tell one part of the mixture from another?" If the answer is yes, then it's hetero instead of homo. In your case, fog is liquid water suspended in a gas, the air. Since you have two physical states, that is a heterogeneous mixture. Likewise, blood has multiple parts: red and white blood cells, small platels floating around that help with clotting, a water base, etc. Since each has unique properties, it is also heterogeneous.

A. heterogeneous catalysts: involves the use of a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. Typical examples involve a solid catalyst with the reactants as either liquids or gases. homogeneous catalysts in the same phase as the reactants. Typically everything will be present as a gas or contained in a single liquid phase

A. Trail mix is a great example of a heterogeneous mixture since everything isn't blended. Mixed cereals also are a good choice. A homogeneous mixture can be anything that is the same throughout. A soda or shampoo works well for this.

Q. Borax in water.. is it homogeneous of hetero? why? help. please. thanks.

A. A mixture is Homogeneous or Heterogeneous. Think homogenized milk. It's the same milk all the way to the last drink. That is homogeneous. Now think of a glass of chocolate drink. You have to shake it because the chocolate doesn't mix and stay mixed. There may be more chocolate in one area than another. That is heterogeneous. A bowl of cereal is heterogeneous. They are not the same all the way through. i think borax mixes to form a solution. A solution is always heterogeneous.

Is oxygen and helium in a scuba tank considered a pure substance, heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture?
Q. And why.
Asked by candacethsu - Sat Sep 5 15:55:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Pure substances are either compounds or elements. A heterogeneous mixture is one with an non-uniform composition. A homogeneous mixture is one with a uniform composition. By that I mean a sample taken from one part of the mixture would be identical to a similar size sample taken from another part of the mixture. All solutions are homogeneous and all gas mixtures are solutions. The scuba tank holds a homogeneous mixture.

Asked by sdorant5 - Thu Apr 17 06:58:50 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hard to tell as there are many factors that would influence the probable outcome, the least of which would be the type of cancer, stage and your personal disposition. You should see an oncologist, if you haven't already done so and have them or someone that your trust act as your case manager to effectively establish the most appropriate treatment regime. As this may well require a multinodal approach. Cancer is NOT a death sentence and in many cases can be treated quite effectively.

how do heterogeneous catalyst work?and other qns in chemistry?
Q. i would like to know how a heterogeneous catalyst works. and. how titanium dioxide crystals on Noxer blocks catalyse oxidation reactions that remove NOx from the atmosphere. and. the way in which three-way catalytic converters are designed to give optimum conversion of pollutants.

A. basically heterogeneous is when the catlysts is different phase to the reactants. these pollutants gases are present in the gaseous mixture produced following the combustion of pertol in the engine of the car. so catlytic converter helps not to produce incomplete combustion example- carbhon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, incomplete hydrocarbons. these are the equation for the catalytic converter action: the oxidation for 2CO to 2CO2 2CO (g) + O2 (g)- 2CO2(g) the reduction of NO2 back to nitrogen 2NO (g) + 2CO(g)-N2(g)+2CO2(g) the oxidation of hydrocarbons to H2O and O2 e.g C6H6 (g)+70.5O2(g)-6CO2(g)+3H2 O(l) id these are not removed from the car exhaust they can lead to the formation of photochemical smog to occur, bright sinlight and the… [cont.]

Is a mixture of salt and sand heterogeneous or homogenous?
Q. Describe a 'physcial' means if separating the two mixtures.
Asked by pamela p - Fri Feb 8 20:22:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think it is heterogeneous. According to on line sources it means that 2 different compounds are mixed together. Sand and salt are different compounds. Here i assume salt means table salt (NaCl). Hence to separate them, pour the mixture into water, and dissolve the salt. Using filter paper, filter out the sand (residue). Take the filtrate and obtain the salt through crystallization (boil of some of the water, then let the rest evaporate to the surroundings).
