What do you get when you ignite a heterogenous mixture of Zn and S?
Q. In proportions of [2]Zn to [1]S? and then [1]Zn to [1]S?
Asked by Dave836 - Thu Feb 21 23:30:31 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With 2Zn to 1S you would get a 50/50 mixture of ZnS and Zn. 1: 1 would give just ZnS.

A. homogeneous is one substance heterogeneous is more than one. You can't see the differences, except if you look at it's molecules or adams. They are opposites. ex. hetero; Italian salad dressing, because you can easily identify the different spices homo; dough

A. Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures with inconsistent, non-uniform composition. The parts of a heterogeneous composition can be mechanically separated from each other. Examples include salad and trail mix. Homogeneous mixtures are mixtures that have definite, consistent properties. Particles are uniformly spread. For example, any amount of a given mixture has the same composition and properties.A homogeneous mixture is a uniform mixture consisting of only one phase. Examples are gasoline and margarine. So basically this means in a homogeneous mixture you can not take apart the composition or properites that make up the mixture and in a heterogeneous mixture you can. Try looking at it that way. That helped me when I was in school. Hope… [cont.]

how can colloids be heterogenous mixture?
Q. example of collids are clouds, hair gel etc. It has only one part to be visible like homogeneous right? So why is it in my text book that colloids are heterogeneous?
Asked by Jenny - Fri Sep 25 00:23:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The quick and easy answer is the particle size dispersed in the medium and the appearance. A colloid has particles sizes that are between a homogeneous and a heterogeneous mixture. The appearance of the colloid determines whether the colloid is considered homogeneous or heterogeneous. Mayonnaise is has a homogeneous appearance. Milk can have a homogeneous appearance or, if the butterfat particles have not been broken down, can appear heterogeneous. (milk is a colloidal mixture of liquid butter fat suspended in a water based liquid)

A. A mixture, by definition consists of two or more elements or substances which do not react chemically. A homogenous mixture will be difficult to separate by ordinary methods, for example a solution of sugar or salt in water, or a mixture of alcohol and water - all of them are mixtures but it is not easy to separate the sugar or salt or alcohol from water. On the other hand sand and gravel also form a mixture but is fairly easy to separate these. Such mixtures are called heterogenous mixtures since on a smaller scale, the two or more components are not uniformly distributed. Concrete is as you can see from the above, heterogenous. Sugar and water will be a homogenous mixture.

Are colloids heterogenous mixtures or homogenous mixtures?
Q. I am currently in a chemistry 101 class and my professor adamantly believe that colloids fall under heterogenous mixtures only . I have researched on a few definitions of colloids and some sources say that it is a heterogenous mixture, others say its a homogenous mixture. And some even say that it is both. Even the wikipedia source is confusing because under colloids it is considered a heterogenous mixture but when you look at the definition of mixtures and the different kinds, colloids (or colloidal dispensions are referred to as homogenous) fall under homogenous mixture. So if it is both, what then makes a colloid a homogenous mixture and a heterogenous mixture? Thanks!
Asked by Kicks007 - Thu Jun 28 22:39:53 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on the scale you're interested in. If you go small enough, even salt water is heterogeneous, made of sodium ions and chlorine ions, each surrounded by water. However, most colloids have particles vastly larger a sodium ion, so they can generally be classified as heterogeneous, whereas salt water can be classified as homogeneous.

what is the difference between a pure substance- compound and a Mixture- heterogeneous mixture?
Q. im having trouble understand this. both compounds and heterogenous mixtures have two or more different elements/atoms. so what is the difference? i know that elements are from pure substances and hetrogenous mixtures are from Mixtures, but what is the difference if they both are actually mixtures?
Asked by DIDI - Mon Feb 2 23:26:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. compounds and heterogeneous mixtures both have two or more different elements/atoms, yes, that is true. however, compound have these elements combined together in consistent and fixed ratios; which means that CO2 will always be CO2, whether it is made in america or in antarctica. however, a heterogeneous mixture, such as air, is a mixture of different elements/compounds that are not combined (or mixed) in fixed ratios. for example, air is composed of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. but if i were to get some from china and compare it to some from switzerland, i would see a vast difference in compositions.

A. Strange question for Women's Health. It is a mixture where the phases are distinct and separate, that part is right. The sand and sugar was a good example. The iced tea wasn't such a good example. Iced tea is made up of many different compounds (and if sweet tea, sugar). All of these items are in a nice dark brown liquid that looks exactly the same and is a homogeneous mixture. Add ice cubes and maybe you could make the arguement that it is heterogenous until the ice melts and it becomes homogenous again.
