How long does it take for you to hike long distances barefoot?
Q. I have been walking around barefoot for a week or so now and went on my first barefoot hike yesterday. It was about 3.5 miles on rough and rocky terrain. I am hoping to stengthen them so I can hike barefoot for many miles with no pain. How long will this take/what kind of training?

A. I don't know what country you live in, but it is fairly normal to be barefoot in most part of the world where the temperature stays above 0 C. To be serious about hiking means that you really want to have tough feet, and the only way to get them is to be barefoot all the time. Recently I had to go to a conference/seminar in another country where bare feet are not acceptable. I was there three weeks and that is the longest I have worn shoes in my life. It took me four days to get any kind of hardness back in my feet when I got home, and after a week everything is back to normal again. So I guess it depends on where you are, how often you go barefoot, how often you have to wear footwear, and what sort of conditions you normally walk… [cont.]

Q. I am planning a hike to the top of Mount Snowdon for children in need but am a little unprepared. I need a route, distance and i also need to know if i need to stop anywhere along the way and if so where?

A. well, if you are going in November, when children in need is going on, I suggest you need to go in a group, as you sound inexperienced(yes - the weather changes quickly!) you need the right gear, and also know where you are going beforehand (there are a few paths up, so do your research) you don't need permission as it's in a national park

How should I go about planning a hike through the Appalachian Trail?
Q. I want to hike all the way through North Carolina on the Appalachian trail in late spring of 2011. I really have no knowledge about how to even begin planning such an adventure. How long would it take? Do I need any permits? What should I pack? A website would be awesome or maybe some book suggestions? I googled this and I just wasn't finding the information I needed or wanted. Thank you in advance!

A. Have you checked with any real outdoor supply company? If you have no basic idea, maybe you ought to start small, like a state park with clearly marked trails. I don't want to hear about some one getting lost and being found at the bottom of a ravine. Here's a link near you:

A. Have you considered taking the area tram in Palm Springs to the higher elevations of the Mount San Jacinto State Park! there are some great camping areas. You will be in a completely different climate zone that what is typical in southern california. And see wild life and geological formations that you would have to drive north a lot of hours to find. There is really so much to do in this area it's hard to fit it all in here! Just google Palm springs hiking and even Joshua tree hiking or Canyoning in southern California. I'm from the north east and when I have the chance to get out that way, I'm almost in heaven. Hopefully one day we will winter in that area.

A. Simple! Does your dog DIG? If so, positively reinforce this behavior by giving treats when the action is performed. If your dog doesn't dig, then find a way to promote the behavior (bury a dog treat in the ground). Then give positive reinforcement for the action. Make sure to give a command before each action is performed (it can be "hike"). Now, when your dog is performing the digging action (hike) start placing the Football under his paws. When your dog moves the football, give him a treat. Repeat many times a day to instill this behavior in your animal. Dogs learn best from positive reinforcement, so give plenty of treats. Eventually through operant conditioning, your dog will move the football on your command. It just takes time to… [cont.]

Asked by sparkee - Wed Jul 30 19:28:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Assuming you can hike about 3 mile per hour (average for an experienced hiker in the hills) and you hike no more than 10 hours a day, it would take about 17 days to go 500 miles. A word of warning if you are talking about the Bay Area Ridge Trail there are many areas that are not complete and you cannot make it all the way around the bay.

A. I'd suggest talking to friends about it, maybe you could get them excited about doing that too. If that's not the case, I'd try and find some local outdoor equipment stores, you could post a flier there or ask if there are any upcoming hiking events/trips someone is putting on. It might not be hiking the entire Appalachian trail but it'll likely be something that helps you get involved in the hiking community and meet people who are interested in a similar trip. Also, shorter hikes would help to prepare you for such a long excursion and help you decide if you really do want to do it or not.

A. Golden Gate park is nice, but it's not really hiking. I'd say if you're looking for green hills and lots of wildflowers, you're looking for Marin, just north of the Golden Gate bridge. Rolling hills, plus a great view of the city and the bay if you get lucky with the weather. Be sure to climb Mt. Tamalpias if you have time! Other great places in Marin county are Muir Woods and Point Reyes, closer to the coast.

Asked by Meredith - Sat Mar 6 00:49:27 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Definitely Waihe'e Valley, north of Wailuku. It's really beautiful and lush and has a swinging bridge. In Makena in South Maui there is a conspicuous hill called Pu'u Olai and there is a nice trail going up it I think with guided nature signs as well. This is a very dry area, not lush at all, but still beautiful in its own, dry way. If you are in West Maui, hiking back into Launiupoko Valley makes a really nice, pleasant evening hike. There's a dirt road that leads back into the valley and from the entrance to the valley you can sit under the hale and gaze down at the ocean below. It's really pleasant, and not a place many people go. If you are feeling *really* adventurous: in Lahaina go to the end of Wahikuli Rd and park your car, go… [cont.]

How much in advance do I have to request a permit to hike down the Kaibab Trail to Phantom ranch ?
Q. I would plan to hike in the month of September with a part of 4 (total)
Asked by corgi - Sat Nov 25 16:46:34 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are planning on staying at Phantom Ranch, you have a couple of options: Cabins or Dorms - There are about a dozen stone cabins and 4 dorm rooms (2 male, 2 female). The cabins are rented as a single unit, while the dorms are rented by the bed (10 beds in each dorm). Cabins and dorms can be reserved up to a year in advance, so there is a good chance they are already booked for next Sept. However, as a poster above mentions, because that is such a long time out, you can sometimes get lucky with cancellations. However, it is Xanterra (a contractor) and NOT the park that runs Phantom Ranch and other lodging at the canyon. While you could try to make reservations in person at Xanterra office at Bright Angel Lodge (not the park HQ),… [cont.]

A. People are still going to the movies. They are still eating out. They are still buying tobacco and lottery tickets. They are still eating junk food. They are still going on vacation. They are still buying blackberries. They are still enrolling children in private schools. They are still flying. I don't see a whole lot of sacrifice. The solution is: reduce the taxes on gas. The govt makes more than the oil companies. Drill where we know there is an abundance of oil. Use efficient alternative fuels when possible. You can't run your car on wind and ethanol has been a complete bust. Build more refineries. This would increase the supply of oil available. Open up the strategic reserves. Oh, and don't forget to tune up your car and… [cont.]
