This is a list of historians.

The names are grouped by order of the historical period in which they were writing, which is not necessarily the same as the period in which they specialized.

Chroniclers and annalists, though they are not historians in the true sense, are also listed here for convenience.

How have historians translated the sumerian language?
Q. I have read some translated text from sumer. I was wondering how historians have been able to translate it.

A. Babylonian cuneiform in the semitic language was deciphered from the trilingual inscription on the Behistun rock face. Once they had access to Babylonian and the closely related Assyrian, scholars had access to the dictionaries and keys to Sumerian written by the Assyrians. It's like a scholar from the future deciphering English and reading an English school textbook on Latin - the languages had the same sort of relationship in ancient times. Rosetta stone has nothing to do with Sumer.
