What are some good home schooling programs?
Q. I am a stay at home father. I would like to know about home schooling and what kind of programs are out there? And what you might like about them.

A. First, I recommend you read "A Thomas Jefferson Education" by Oliver DeMille (available at gwc.edu in the bookstore section). Second, if you are looking for general information on homeschooling, try hslda.org. As far as curriculum, a lot of people like Abeka, as has been already mentioned. Bob Jones University Press is another option. In my home (I was homeschooled k-12), my mom would just pick and choose which programs she liked for each subject. It's a little more work that way, but often you will find a better fit for the child. are all great websites for curriculum. Also look into Elijah Company. They have a great cataloge, but I don't have a web address for them. Without knowing how old your children are, I can't… [cont.]

Are there any secular home schooling programs out there?
Q. I don't want a religious/spiritual program. I don't mind if a program includes a world religions course because something like that would include comparative religions without choosing a side. That's cool with me. I just don't want something with a religious slant. I also want a program that teaches evolution. But also a program that is strong.

Should the federal government continue to regulate home-schooling programs?
Q. why or why not? I should add that I was reading a political candidate's issue list when I came up with this question. I figured I would put the question forward to those who knew more than I did about homeschooling. It is my understanding that *most* of the authority resides with the states but that federal government has gained some authority in education by requiring states to do certain things in order to receive federal funds. I was also reading somewhere (sorry, no link) that there was legislation put before the gov't by the Home Legal Defence Association which would request federal funds based upon a record of high test scores of home schooled children. This led to my question. I don't know a lot about homeschooling, but it… [cont.]

A. The federal government does not currently regulate homeschooling. That is up to the individual state govt. It should remain this way as the federal govt. does not have the constitutional right to do so, and as they don't fund homeschooling, that further cements the fact that they shouldn't regulate it.

A. What kind of "homeschooling program" do you have in mind? Are you looking for someone else to teach the lessons? Do you want classes that you can take? Are you wanting a school of sorts? Or are you just wanting to know how to go about homeschooling in your area? First try looking for local homeschool support groups. A lot of these are online. Some aren't. If you can't find any online, you might try checking with your local place of worship to see if they have a support group, or try the public library to see if they know of any support groups. Or try joining a national online group and then ask there for information about local options in your area. If you want classes that homeschoolers can take, you might try asking at local… [cont.]

A. I think you're asking if Penn is as good as Joe Blow High School in their education of students and college readiness. I some ways it is better. If you're highly motivated it can get you into college faster. If you're wondering about job readiness, I think it is better because you have the opportunity to work a real job while homeschooling, getting you ground level experience in a field that interests you and not be confined to a few hours after school or weekends. Here is the deal: You need to learn to read well, write well, do basic math proficiently, some higher math if you plan to keep up with it in your career choices, have a decent grasp of world history, geography, life science, biology, basic chemistry, know the basics of… [cont.]

A. TRISMS is among the best I've seen. It allows you to do your own research, form your own views, and put together your own coursework. It includes literature, writing, history, worldview, history of science and technology, art/art history, and plenty of other things. It's at the following link: For science, I really like Apologia. It's got relevant information presented in a clear way, very little "busy work" type assignments, and the book and the labs are supplemented with a CDRom. You can even get an MP3 of the books if you learn best by hearing. Writing...IEW. Hands down. My favorite by far. Lit Analysis...Lightning Lit or Teaching the Classics. Math...VideoText Interactive. A. Yes. You should meet with a school official at the public school you want to send your child to. They will get you started in the enrollment process and help your child transfer to the new school as easily as possible.

A. Usually consulting counselors at the community service centres are a lot of help, likewise with teachers that you may meet on a social basis. Without that luxury, search the local (or whichever country you would like to work/study in in the future) syllabus, and do projects on finding out about each chapter, and each subject. You don't need to cover a zillion subjects, just choose 4-5 that you like, and do them on a regular basis. Say 2 hrs of work researching every day, and that's a good start. =) Try to have 1 foreign language in there, and some sciences, some maths and some social sciences.

A. Try finding a big building in your neighborhood that has a lot of kids in it all day. They're FREE ! Remember, a 'home schooled' kid is not very much smarter than their parents. What if I am 'home schooling' my kids to 'believe' in fairy tales and rumors? How 'bout you? If my 'beliefs' are that the Earth is at the center of the Universe, and the Sun goes around the Earth, and the Earth was "created" in 7 days 6,000 years ago,so what? At least they won't be given all that liberal BS in inferior 'public schools' !

A. "The best program" for homeschooling is the one that works for you! Researxh your state laws. Research your state's high school curriculum. Then figure out the best way for YOU to learn what is required. It can be not only good but great to do homeschooling. You can work at your own pace, set your own schedule, choose your own courses (within reason). Homeschooling doesn't have to be expensive. People have gotten a good education with nothing more than pencil and paper, a math book, and a library card.

A. I'm taking classes from Keystone National High School (they have a middle school too) Online courses are $379 per year. AP Classes are $429 for one year. I like Keystone because you can start a course anytime of the year, you get one year to finish you classes, you can study online anytime, they have supportive staff/teachers, the classes are great. They also have installment, so you don't have to pay everything before you start class. They give out a real high school diploma too.

what home-schooling program do the parents from "18 kids and counting" use?
Q. The homeschooling websites I have come across are all awkward and difficult to get information from. I need to know a national home-school system that I can have my mother enroll me in. Where would one get materials for national homeschooling from, such as the program used in "18 Kids and Counting"?

A. There is not a "national homeschooling" program. First, the laws regarding homeschooling vary from state to state. In my state, you can enroll in a virtual program as a homeschooler, or a program that offers homeschooling but that alone does not meet the legal requirements. You also have to be under the auspices of an accountability association, maintain certain records, etc. I am not sure what program the Duggar family uses. Have you tried their website? I believe there is a FAQ section, and it might address the issue. However, what works for them may or may not work for you. There are a variety of resources available, and I would suggest that you and your mother check out a variety of them (ask for free catalogs, go to a… [cont.]

A. I use ACE Paces for a few subjects. I do them in English, Science, and Social Studies because I like them for those subjects. I homeschool my 11 year old daughter. Then I supplement the paces. I teach her math myself because I don't like the math paces. I teach vocabulary to my daughter by finding words appropriate for her grade level. Then she has to find the definitions and put the words in sentences. I also teach literature to my daughter. I found a list of books on line that are appropriate for her grade level. I read the book first to make sure it is appropriate for her and then I make up a list of questions about the book and test my daughter after she finishes reading the book. The beautiful part about homeschooling is that you can… [cont.]
