Homeschooling or homeschool (also called home education or home learning) is the education of children at home, typically by parents but sometimes by tutors, rather than in a formal setting of public or private school. Although prior to the introduction of compulsory school attendance laws, most childhood education occurred within the family or community, homeschooling in the modern sense is an alternative in developed countries to formal education. Homeschooling is a legal option in many places for parents to provide their children with a learning environment as an alternative to publicly-provided schools. Parents cite numerous reasons as motivations to home school, including better academic test results, poor public school environment, improved character/morality development, and objections to what is taught locally in public school. It is also an alternative for families living in isolated rural locations or living temporarily abroad. Homeschooling may also refer to instruction in the home under the supervision of correspondence schools or umbrella schools. In some places, an approved curriculum is legally required if children are to be home-schooled. A curriculum-free philosophy of homeschooling may be called unschooling, a term coined in 1977 by American educator John Holt in his magazine Growing Without Schooling. From Wikipedia under the

It has a lot of great info in it on what to pick for your child's personality and learning style and a lot of info on what is in each curriculum. Homeschooling is trial and error, we seldom do everything the same from year to year, and sometimes we find things that are AWESOME!!!. Sonlight curriculum has a great return policy if you are not happy with something too. I pick and choose from different curriculums, I also try to focus on what me kids are interested in, there are some great Unit studies out there. Do not let it overwhelm you, your child WILL learn regardless of what you do! Answered by abke5252 - Wed Apr 9 12:11:52 2008 What are the requirements in Tennessee for homeschooling? Q. My son is only one, but I'm thinking very seriously about homeschooling him when he starts kindergarten. I think I'm going to send him to a good pre-school, but homeschool him after that. I don't have a degree (although I am going back to school soon). So, what are the requirements for homeschooling your children in the state of Tennessee? I am in Florida but I use a school based in Tennessee to teach my children at home and it is very easy to use and follows all the laws required for Tennessee and Florida. It is also very inexpensive compared to other schools, I highly recommend you look into it and see if this is for you as well, as they also have counselor for every grade to help you answer questions too and I find them very informative, as I do have on in high school, they only require one of the parents in the home have a GED of High School Diploma Answered by Noble Angel - Mon Jan 21 11:18:05 2008 How to respond to people who don't understand homeschooling special needs children?
Q. I am homeschooling my son who has PDD. We are relaxed about our homeschooling. It is not like i can say that we do this subject at this time and this subject at that time. I can say that i have homeschooled my older daughter- who has developmental issues, since we pulled her from school after first grade- she is now 17 and she has made amazing progress. Other people have noticed it as well. Now with my younger son, somehow i am getting questions and comments from people that are along the lines of, what do I plan on DOING with him- how long is he going to stay home doing 'nothing' when he can be in a special school where there are special ed teachers who can help him, and blah blah blah. What do I say to this? How do I even begin… [cont.] Asked by NewSong - Mon Aug 13 21:05:22 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm sorry you have to face this. There are some people in this world who seem to think they have all the answers, even when they don't know the situation. Aargh! If you feel you need to answer their "concerns", just say something like, "We've made a decision based on what is best for our family", then change the subject. If they persist, tell them firmly that you really don't want to discuss it any further - it is your decision and it was not made lightly. If they can't accept this, maybe it's time to cut them out of your life and find friends who are more supportive of your decision (and your child's needs).
