What kind of homework does your 1st grader have?
Q. I have a 1st grader; however, his school does not give homework. Is this normal? Also what kind of homework are your kids bringing in, those of you with first graders?

A. well...how does the opinion of a 1st grade teacher sound? something that i do differently compared to most classes, is that i send home a packet of homework each monday, and expect it to be returned on friday. the kids then have a whole week to pace themselves. not to mention it is easier for them to keep track of an actual packet vs single slips of paper. we have 6 new spelling words each week, and i expect the kids to write each word 5 times, and to write a sentence with each...they need to write a journal entry (3-5 sentences) about what we are covering in science or social studies...i ask that they read (or be read to) for 10-15 minutes every night...they also put a list of 10-15 words in ABC order...and i also send home 2 math… [cont.]

How much homework can I expect my kids to have when they get in school?
Q. I never had much home work and I didn't do what homework I did get sent home with. My wife was recently helping our nephew with his homework every night after school. She stopped keeping him now. But the boy had at least 2 to 3 hours of homework every night. I think , he was not utilizing his time properly at school. But when my kids get into school , how much homework should I expect them to have?

A. It really depends on the teacher, grade, and school! Ours is in Kindergarten and she has no homework, but a friend of ours son who was in Kindergarten at a different school. (Both schools only about 10 miles apart), got at least 2 hours of homework a night. It was ridiculous. I think it should be how my teacher phrased it in high school, that homework should never take you more than an hour unless your slacking. But I think some teachers now a days are putting a lot more pressure on the kids. So when your kids get into school I would talk to the teacher if you feel they are getting to much homework, it really will take a toll on your child. *My friends kid hated school because he'd get home at 3, do homework till 6 and then… [cont.]

What is the deal with the homework questions?
Q. Obviously I'm not the only one asking this question, but for those of you who have been on longer than I have, did this happen last year? I mean, is this a cyclical thing? We just got done with all those summer reading questions and now it's homework! Maybe I'm old school but honestly I didn't go to strangers with my homework problems--I worked them out on my own or with study groups. Where's the growth in having the answers told to you? And what makes you think you're going to get the right answer anyway--maybe someone's just answering with the wrong answer to mess with you.

A. Well, I look at it this way. I don't mind helping people on YA even if it's homework, just as long as they have a legitimate question and not just lazy. For instance, why would someone ask about a chapter in a book when they can simply read it for themselves? To me that's lazy. Now if someone doesn't understand something about the chapter and the way it's worded, that's a totally other question indeed. We do have older people on the YA sidelines, and like myself have a lot of information to share about things we learned in life. There are a few younger ones, too, who are pretty intelligent as well.

How much homework does your kids have vs what grade they are in?
Q. I really want to know how much homework your kids have when they come home from school everyday. (Well or how much they just had!) I don't remember ever having the homework my kids have. I will start - mine are in 3rd and 4th grade. 3rd grader has this math assignment every single night (it is one of two papers) even on Fridays and is supposed to read for about a half an hour. 4th grader has math of about 30 problems (pre-algerba) spelling words written 5x each (10 words) and has so to read for about that same half an hour. Also on Fridays too. I never understood the reading thing, they read for like an hour everyday IN school, both my boys read well above their grade levels. I think it is too much homework myself. A. I have found that it often isn't the grade, it is the school. Some schools emphasize "study hall" or a "study period" where students can work on homework. (Especially in schools where athletics are pushed.) This is great for students who otherwise would be too busy for schoolwork or don't have a good home environment to focus. Some teachers "allow" students to choose whether to work on homework at school. This is when you see the students' personality come out - some will tackle homework to be done, others will read instead and take homework home. Outside of school reading time - do your kids read in the car? Count That. Is the time based on a week? Divide up the total time for that week. My kids are now 23, 17, 11. We've… [cont.]

A. Remember the benefits of doing your homework in the long run. If you do your homework you will maintain good grades and then you can go to college and do something great with your life. Try and stay positive. Make it a habit to get into. Try and do your homework first thing when you get home that way it is done and then you can plan out the rest of the evening. Good luck!

How much homework should I be doing everyday?
Q. I'm in Gr. 10 and take all academic classes. I'm wondering how many hours I should be spending on homework at the most everyday? I feel as if I'm almost doing too much homework and there's no time for anything else to do.
Asked by Danny - Sun Nov 9 11:00:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If homework leaves you no time for anything else, then thats about normal. If you're repeating something over and over again though and you already know it perfectly, and you're just doing it to please your teacher, don't. Just do enough to learn it, and a bit more to reinforce it, then the rest either don't do or don't put much effort into. What does it matter if you're teacher doesn't like you for doing that, if you do well at tests they can't drop you or anything. And you're in year 10, so lots of teachers probably don't check it and tell you to be responsible for your own learning.. coz its..yawn.. i forget the rest... its just a blessing if their like that. Depends how well you want to do though, if you want to be a millionaire yuppie… [cont.]

How can I stop getting distracted whilst doing my homework?
Q. When I'm doing my homework, I usually need to use my laptop. The problem is that I always get distracted by Bebo or MSN. I also think of other things that I could be doing. Even when I turn off Bebo and MSN, I just get bored easily. How can I do my homework whilst staying keen at the same time?
Asked by Clart - Mon Sep 15 13:51:01 2008 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments
A. what you need to do is simply turn your internet connection off when you are not using it for research or whatever. That way there is no way you can turn bebo or MSN on without having an error message. Another good idea would be to schedule your days, think a week in advance of when you are now, what homework has to be done, how long will it take. Then allocate homework to different parts of the days to work around your lifestyle. Also make sure to get out plenty in between doing this. A more calm, relaxed and socialized mind is always a better one to use in your work. Just remember, when doing your homework do not open MSN and talk to people whilst doing it, and often, absolute silence is best for working and concentrating.

A. You've got a physics test, an English paper due and a big track meet next week. Ooh, and don't forget that dance everyone s been talking up. If you find yourself inhaling food as you rush from the library to the mall or you notice a persistent ache in your lower jaw or the back of your neck, you probably need a little stress reduction. Here are five easy tips: 1. Exercise. You'll be surprised by how much better you'll feel if you take 30 minutes to practice yoga, go for a jog in the park or shoot some hoops. You ll reduce those stress-inducing hormones and boost your endorphins (those feel-good chemicals). Engaging in a rhythmic activity like swimming also helps clear your head. 2. A. I think that the best way to handle this would be to have a set time each night to work on homework. I wouldn't suggest immediately after school...everyone needs time to wind down and kids need to work off all that built up energy. I would suggest getting home, having a snack, playing or hanging out and then doing the homework. Everyone does homework every night. Turn off the tv, the stereo and telephone and sit at the dining room table. If someone doesn't have homework, they can sit around the table and read or color a picture or practice writing their letters or numbers. The point is that no one is doing something other than work during work time. You don't want them to not bring their homework home or rush thru it at… [cont.]

A. is there anything particular he likes doing?? like art or something? well if he wants to grow up to do what he wants to nd not have a dead end job, then he'll do his homework...just ask him if he wants to work at arby's until hes 80...if he doesnt then tell him he will unless he does his homework, you could also ask the teachers for copies of the worksheets or w/e that he has everynight, that way if he says he forgot it, you'll have an extra copy. you could also take privilages away, like not being allowed to whatch tv unless ALL of his homework is done, or that he cant go on the computer until he raises his grade. hope this helps!

What is the point of doing your homework?
Q. I have more than 4 hours worth of homework in every subject. Its just stressing me out, I'm just in middle school. I missed dinner and my favorite TV Show. Why do we even do homework in the first place.

A. I doubt that you have over 4 hrs in each subject, that's an exaggeration, isn't it. The purpose of doing homework is to learn the subject, this is why we have school...to learn. So get off the computer, stop wasting time, and get it over and done with. Good luck!

Q. I used to be very conscientious but then it all fell apart and I dont get to homework till 6, sometimes 7. A lot of the time I'm eating, watching TV, playing on the computer. Sometimes Im cleaning my room or jogging (I dont jog when its sunny, hence the later times) I also need to STUDY!!! But Its very hard to kick myself into a good homework habit. What do you suggest?

A. You don't have to do homework right after school...you can take a break or rest for a while, or even eat dinner first, then get to work after an hour. Once you start, make sure you finish the job! If you can, finish everything before playing, but if not, try to fit whatever you can in an hour or so, then take a break and continue it when you can. Also, try not to find excuses to escape doing homework- tell yourself that once its over, you're free. Haha. Whatever you decide to do to make yourself do school stuff, make sure you stick to that...Hope you get to doing well soon!=)

How can i get more motivated to do my homework?
Q. I can't be bothered to do my homework, or study any more. Most nights I get home from school and don't get anything done, then feel guilty about it later. My assignments are constantly left to the night before they are due. I always tell myself that im going to change these habits, but i never do. What are your tips for getting homework done, studying, avoiding procrastination, getting motivated to do school work, and planning my time wisely. Im a girl in juniour year at high school.

A. Youtube some videos on the topics covered in class. Do a search online and watch a related movie then get your books out and be ready to dive in. As soon as you get home empty your backpack out onto your bed and always have your bed clean before going to sleep. Be sure to apply what you are learning to things that are going on in life at the time. Ask and see what others have to say on the topic. Have a study party on Sundays where you and 5 other friends gather to do leftover homework together. And don't turn to food or other things outside the home when you have homework to do. Just put the important fun first, homework second, and food and outings last. Good luck and many blessings to you.You have already identified a need: motivation.… [cont.]

How can I stay motivated to do homework?
Q. I have a lot of homework to complete, but don't know how to stay motivated. What should I do? How should I prioritize my time? Any advice is greatly welcomed and appreciated!

A. First of all your computer should not be on unless you are typing an essay... no music and no eating or T.V... Start from the subject you had first then work your way down as a way to keep track... give yourself a time limit for each assignment so that you have the want to finish before that time.. so hopefully you get everything done well and fast... Good luck with your homework... After you read this you should get off and start working :)

How long does it take you to finish homework and finish studying for all tests?
Q. Also, I know this isn't normal, but I usually takes me five hours to do homework and an aditional four hours of studying after school (I'm sophomore by the way and as a result get 4 A's and 2 -A's). I don't get how other smart people spend time on schoolwork far less than me and get straight A's. How do they do it?

How much homework do you usually have per night or week?
Q. And what grade are you in? I'm a sophomore this year, and I'm just buried in homework. I'm taking all honors courses, but it's so much work one week, and then no work another week. It's killing my soul, I swear.

How relieved do you feel when you finish your homework ahead of time?
Q. For the first time in two months I've actually gotten homework done before the time it's due. Granted, it's online homework due at exactly 2:05 a.m. tomorrow morning but still. I'm early. It is such an awesome relief. Maybe this will motivate me to get the rest of my homework done on time? Ehh, it was worth a shot. I'm off for some pie. How relieved are you when you finish your homework ahead of time? Or when you get anything done ahead of time?

A. Yes! I feel really proud of myself when I finish homework on time, like a heavy brick has been lifted off my head. Sadly, it's a rarity. I once studied TWO days in advance for my math test. It was such a relief not to be cramming the night before/morning of, and it was the best test I've done this year. But this week I've been cramming, falling asleep at my desk, procrastinating, and skipping classes to finish assignments/study. Glad tomorrow's Friday.

How can I concentrate better when doing homework on the computer?
Q. Whenever I do homework on the computer, I always find myself getting distracted by things like myspace, games, and such. It's really difficult to get my homework done in a timely manner. Like I'm trying my best to not get distracted, but I eventually do. I've already tried downloading a site blocker add on for Firefox, but that still doesn't work too well.. I've tried listening to music while doing homework, still nothing. Helppp
