What is the difference between hydrocortisone acetate and hydrocortisone?
Q. My doctor told me to put hydrocortisone cream on surgical scar tissue I have on my ear and at the store i found something (cheaper) that said it contained "hydrocortisone acetate 1.0% (equivalent to hydrocortisone 1.0%)". When I called my doctor to ask him if it was alright he said it wasn't the same thing, but I don't know if he even knew what I was talking about. So is it really different at all, since the product container said they are equivalent?
Asked by rawkerxx - Thu Jun 26 17:34:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's the same thing (at least, as far as I know--you may have to ask him to explain, as it's possible he knows something that I don't about the difference). The important ingredient is the hydrocortisone. It comes in various different strengths from 0.1% to 2.5%. The larger percent ones are prescription only. I have a feeling though, that he may have misunderstood what you said.

Why is it that a person should take hydrocortisone tablets with food?
Q. Is it solely to avoid an upset stomach? There are three medications I have to take each day. I'd like to take them all at the same time, but one is supposed to be taken on an empty stomach, and the hydrocortisone needs to be taken with food or milk. I often forget to take the hydrocortisone since I can't take it at the same time as the others.

A. That's what I understand. I've never taken it, but most meds that require food is to avoid upset stomach

A. 10 mg of decadron (dexamethsone) equals: 267 mg of hydrocortisone I'll show my work. Used the website below as a reference. (0.75 mg dexamethasone)...(10 mg dexamethsone) --- ... =... --- (20 mg hydrocortisone)...(??? mg hydrocortisone) (20 x 10) / 0.75 = ~ 267 mg

Can I put hydrocortisone cream on my 18 month old son?
Q. My son has a rash, i looked on the net to find what kind of rash it was, but i can't find it. I was wondering if i could put Hydrocortisone cream on it. If it is safe for a small child? The rash turns red when he gets hot and has small white bumps, almost like small blisters. It spreads to different spots then dissapears. But when he gets hot it comes back. It's not a heat rash.
Asked by Ashpo - Thu Jan 15 19:21:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sounds like you should see a doctor to find out what it is, and maybe make sure your son doesn't overheat. Are you *sure* it's not a heat rash, considering it's caused by heat? In the meanwhile though, yes, you can use a little hydrocortisone if it's not on something he'll stick in his mouth or eyes (like, don't use it on his hands). In the *long* run, corticosteroids (like hydrocortisone (=over the counter) and triamcinolone (=prescription only)) will make the skin thinner which can cause problems, so if his rash keeps coming back, you really need to see the doctor to see whether there is something better you can do. Maybe make sure all his clothes are cotton, or maybe switch washing powder or something.

Can I put hydrocortisone cream on my face?
Q. I've tried many things, but my skin is still dry and flaky. I've even put vaseline on my face at night hoping that would work, but still, nothing has helped. I do have acne, so I was wondering if hydrocortisone cream would be too much or not. Please help:)
Asked by Alex B - Tue Mar 7 20:34:02 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree with the other recommendation to see a dermatologist. Hydrocortisone is a topical steroid and it makes the skin very tender. It is classified as an anti-inflammatory and will do nothing to help with dry skin. Vaseline clogs up the natural pores on your skin and will increase the possibility of an acne outbreak.

Can taking too much hydrocortisone increase risk of sunburn?
Q. Im just wondering this as am taking 40mg hydrocortisone and got surprisingly sunburnt yesterday. My ginger friend didn't however which is strange. I know that ACTH increased melanin in the skin, so am wondering if too much hydrocortisone will suppress ACHT and therefore melanin too, resulting in less UV protection? THanks

Is it ok to put hydrocortisone cream on a two week old tattoo?
Q. I had this bump with some red spots around it that I assumed was a heat rash, but the little red spots around it are gone, and now there is just this big itchy bump that sorta hurts. Much like an ant sting. Its right smack dab in the middle of my tattoo though. Is it ok to put Cortisone 10 on it?

What works better for getting rid of an itch. I have polysporin or hydrocortisone cream?
Q. I have itchy scalp from hair dye from the salon.
Asked by marley - Sat Oct 13 18:44:39 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not sure that either of those would be great for your scalp or for the hair color. But if you are going to use one, I would recommend hydro-cortisone cream, it is for itching and the other is more for fighting infection. The best thing to do would probably be to take benedryl. Ibuprofen might help some with the discomfort.

A. LOL! I brushed my teeth with monostat for 2 days before I realized it. I have never had thrush. Since hydrocortisone reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness, and swelling - hum - that's what you can expect.

A. my doctor told me to use otc hydrocortisone on my face too. the reason i have to use otc and not the stronger perscription, is because the stronger one will thin out the skin. so i'm pretty sure that the otc one will not. i've used it for years also, and my skin isnt thin at all. good luck.

How long does prescription hydrocortisone cream keep for?
Q. And others like it? When do you have to throw them out?
Asked by yanks7 - Sun Jun 17 16:51:18 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Basically, different creams stay useable for varying amounts of time. Hydrocortisone should last more than a year. The best thing to do however, is to find the expiry date of the medication. It can be found on the box usually, you just have to have a look around. Also it is printed on the tube of cream as well. If you can't find it on the tube, try looking at the tail, where the end piece folds over. There should be something like "Exp: 06/08" written there. It tells you that the medication expires in June 2008. Hope this helps

i had a rash on my face and the Dr prescribed me hydrocortisone cream?
Q. i have a rash from soap again so i asked my dad to go to the chemist yesterday and he came home with canesten hydrocortisone cream which also contains clotrimazole. is this ok to use? i have just bought some tea tree soap for its anti-bacterial properties i have used soap for many years and only had this rash twice now-i do usually use sensitive soap (i.e simple/dove)
Asked by Rad - Sun Dec 30 10:06:54 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The cream you need is a hydrocortisone 0.1% as anything else on your face would be too strong. The pharmacist needs to know what part of your body you are using the cream on. Canesten isn't suitable for the face.

Is hydrochloride a form of hydrocortisone?
Q. I've been applying a hydrocloride antibacterial ointment in my cat's eye for tearing, oozing and inflamation. Somebody told me that hydrocortisone might be bad if he has feline herpes. So I'm concerned that the vet prescribed something that might have an adverse effect.

A. steroids should not be given to a cat with feline herpes. I believe that those two things are not the same thing. if you have any questions or concerns please call your vet, they should be able to tell you over the phone.

A. Generally speaking, any type of corticosteroid is best limited to a week, since most of the serious & chronic side effects appear after that time. However,it still depends on the condition that the corticosteroid is used for & the instructions of ur doctor.

Does Hydrocortisone Spray for dogs work?
Q. We have just did a clean make over and vacuum (it is a dogs best friend) to get rid of fleas...washed bed sheets, clean animal beds etc... (got them a new one) Does this spray help heal the sore spots? Bonnie does L stand for loser? I've seen your answer for other questions, you're quite rude. And if you must know, they recommended it but not everything they recommend works.
Asked by i almost never shoot anybody - Sat Jan 10 11:54:54 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's purpose is not to heal so much as take away the itch. The lack of scratching leads to the healing. Don't forget to spray Raid or something else into your vacuum to make sure you kill all the little beggars that hang out in there too!
