How to get rid of incense smells quickly?
Q. I have a friend whose roommate constantly burns incense, which permeates the air and annoys her. Although she's asked her roommate repeatedly to stop burning the incense, the roommate refuses. Seeking help from a higher authority will most likely amount to nothing, so now she'd like to find some ways to eliminate the odor. Incense itself is pungent and concentrated, so normal air fresheners and opening the windows have been proven unsuccessful. Any help on how to reduce or eliminate the incense smells would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A. I debated posting this. Not because it is rude or improper but because it is the holiday and I am drinking. There is a way, to take care of some of it. Vanilla Extract will kill the odor. But it will stain anything light colored. It would be feasible to soak a rag in vanilla extract and leave it out, but not on something that it would stain. V.E. is what you clean marine fish coolers with, because it permeates the material and reacts with the odors. I use it and it works like magic. But it can stain. So consider that. Most people are not offended by the smell of V.E., as opposed to puking over excessive incense odor. Don't blame me if you stain something, I told you not to use it where it will stain. She needs to get out of there.

Would incense suffocate the bedbugs after lighting the incense?
Q. I heard someone talking about using incense to suffocate the bedbugs and reduce the amount of spreading around during the wintertime..Could anyone confirm this for me, thx!
Asked by T Quin - Fri Nov 23 14:59:55 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Incense will do nothing. Bed bugs do not just pop from no where, you would have to come across them to bring them home. Besides that the #1 solution to not let them get out of control is to have mattress covers that encases the mattresses. Most cases are being spread through hotels, most hotels are now gaining education on this pest and will reduce the cases through this avenue. Chemical companies & universities are working on solutions, since most chemicals are not specifically designed for bedbugs. There is also no increase in wintertime spreading of the bedbug.

How can I make incense that smells nice?
Q. I've been trying to make my own homemade incense using a few recipes found on the net. Most I've tried though smell awful! Please can anyone help?

A. That would be easier to answer if we knew what you had tried and what sort of scents you like. It is important to have good quality ingredients. make sure your herbs are what they say they ar enad are not to old or musty. If you use essential oils then make sure they are the best you can afford and are definately essential oils and not perfume oils or oil blends. one of my favourite recipes is: 1 pt Myrrh 1pt Frankincense 1/2 pt cinamon bark 1/2 pt cloves 1 drop sandalwood

How can I burn Incense in my dorm room without it setting off the fire alarm or getting caught? ?
Q. I really love the smell of incense, but I live in a dorm room, and there is a smoke detector in the room, I fear that if I burn incense, the smoke will trip the alarm. It is also not allowed in the dorm because of fire hazards, but my incense burner is a water bowl with a pole for the incense, specifically made so that your incense wont burn the house down. So that isn't an issue. Any Ideas?
Asked by Aubrey - Thu Jan 22 19:04:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most smoke alarms that I'm familiar with will not go off from the smoke generated by incense. Now maybe if you burn a half-dozen sticks at once it might, but one stick at a time shouldn't create enough combustion products to trigger the alarm.

Q. How can i make my own loose incense burner? I have to full bags of the powder and cant use it until I get a burner for it. Is there anyway i can make a home made burner? so if i use a ash holder then all i have to do is put it in there and just light it on fire and let it burn?

A. for loose incense you really don't need a burner a glass ashtray will work or a ceramic plate or saucer, but if you just want to make one take an empty fruit or veggie can fill it with water and freeze it, when it is frozen solid take a large nail and at the top put a hole on either side near the top rim these holes will be for wire to hang your burner, Then take a smaller nail and hammer some more holes in the can about\t one and a half inch from the bottom of the can you can do this in a pattern that you draw on the can or just randomly these holes are for your smoke to come out, be careful where you sit it when using it gets hot I would sit it in an ash tray. or hang it out of the way and not close to anything flammable or the wall.

Is burning incense safe if in a separate room from my birds with door shut and well ventilated?
Q. I have been burning incense in a separate room from my birds for over a year without problems but just heard that incense anywhere in the house is unsafe. Seems like if it is well ventilated and away from them it should be ok.
Asked by kaileym - Sat Jul 25 17:01:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Incense is scented with oils that burn into a toxic gas. Since pet birds have sensitive respiratory systems, I wouldn't risk using incense. I don't know of any incense that is safe to use around birds. I'd stop using it.

how to use my japanese incense burner?
Q. I recently bought a japanese incense burner. The burner itself is a small white plate (about 2 inches across) with a small curved edge, and a hole in it. I have the incense that came with it as well. does anyone know how to burn/use it?
Asked by Niksterrrr - Sun Sep 9 18:46:34 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Stick the narrow part of the incense stick into the hole, with the stick of incense sort of hanging over the plate ( to catch any ash.) then, just light the incense.

Can I burn incense in the same room as a goldfish tank?
Q. I have a vague recollection that somebody once told me that strong smells upset goldfish. I can't remember who told me and whether it was just that you shouldn't have strong smells on your hands when you put them in the water. I love burning incense, but I'm worried that it might make my fish unhappy. Does anybody know? I have a 300 litre tank which has a plastic lid on the top.
Asked by DIANE R - Thu Jun 26 07:46:28 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi Diane, I can't say for certain whether it will cause problems but I certainly would not do that. This is because the airstone draws anything in the air into the tank & immediately diffuses it into the water, smoking for example is very dangerous as introduces nicotine into the water which is a poison. Another dangerous substance is house paint-using that anywhere near your tank is asking for trouble. Same goes for any sprays, inhalers, perfumes, deodorants etc, if you must use them, always try to use them in another room. Due to the various types of incense it may be that some are less toxic or even harmless while others may be quite lethal to fish, no way of telling unless you are a chemist/scientist etc. probably best to err on… [cont.]

A. Incense has been used to accompany and symbolize prayer in Judaism and Christianity for thousands of years. In the Old Testament, God mandates the use of incense in Jewish worship: "For burning incense you shall make an altar of acacia wood, ... "On it Aaron shall burn fragrant incense. Morning after morning, when he prepares the lamps, and again in the evening twilight, when he lights the lamps, he shall burn incense. Throughout your generations this shall be the established incense offering before the LORD. (Exodus 30:1-9) Aaron makes an offering of incense: "Thus shall Aaron offer up the bullock, his sin offering, to atone for himself and for his family. When he has slaughtered it, he shall take a censer full of glowing embers from… [cont.]

How do you burn this type of incense?
Q. I have this incense that is a "Cone" type the size and look of a hershey kiss or so; how do I burn it? Do I put a lit match to it? Do I blow it out afterwards? Do I have to burn it all at once or can I blow it out and re-light it? Help!
Asked by ihatethetalkofforever - Sun Apr 12 22:15:33 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Light it - once the tip is glowing, blow it out and it will smoulder. place something underneath - a heavy ashtray filled with salt for example - those burn hot, up to 500 degrees - so be mindfull of safety. some you can relight - some will be impossible to put out - it depends on the base (sandalwood powder, charcoal or sawdust are most common). Try putting a drop of water on the glowing end to put them out - they will have to throughly dry before you try to relight them.

A. Take all the sticks and lay them out on a ceramic plate. If you have a gas range, place the plate on the bottom rack over the pilot light in the oven and let sit overnight. You kitchen should smell really nice in the morning! The incense sticks should now be dry enough to burn all the way down. Place them back into their airtight container. If they still don't burn well, repeat. Just trying to remove the moisture. If you have an electric range, place in the oven on a ceramic plate on the top rack, turn the temp to warm, let sit for a couple of hours until you can smell them, then turn off. Let sit 'til cool, place them in an airtight container. If they still don't burn well, repeat the procedure. Hope This Helps
