An ion is an atom or molecule where the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge. An anion (pronounced /ˈænaɪən/; an-eye-on), from the Greek word ἀνά (ana), meaning 'up', is an ion with more electrons than protons, giving it a net negative charge (since electrons are negatively charged and protons are positively charged). Conversely, a cation (pronounced /ˈkætaɪən/; cat-eye-on), from the Greek word κατά (kata), meaning 'down', is an ion with more protons than electrons. An ion consisting of a single atom is a monatomic ion. If it consists of two or more atoms, it is a polyatomic ion. Polyatomic ions containing oxygen, such as carbonate and sulfate, are called oxyanions. When writing the chemical formula for an ion, its charge is written as a superscript '+' or '−' following a number indicating the difference between the number of protons and the number of electrons. The number is omitted if it is equal to 1. For example, the sodium cation is written as Na, the '+' indicating that it has one less electron than it has protons. The sulfate anion is written as SO4, the '2−' indicating that it has two more electrons than it has protons. If an ion contains unpaired electrons, it is called a radical ion. Just like neutral radicals, radical ions are very reactive. FormationFrom Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How does the addition of cyanide ions affect the uptake of sodium ions by a cell? Q. If sodium icons move from the surrounding solutions where they are at a low concentration into the cytoplasm of a cell where they are at a higher concentration. Cyanide ions stop the functioning of the electron carrier system in mitochoridria. Im stuck on the above question and this is the information in my assigment, does anyone know this or any links please Asked by Princess - Tue Nov 6 12:17:29 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I thought sodium was pumped out of the cell... Anyway cyanide prevents respiration so any energy requiring processes, such as active transport, that occur will be hindered. Answered by Neil G - Tue Nov 6 12:40:28 2007 How does one go about finding ions in a compound? Q. For example:The number of ions of ammonium in the formula for ammonium phosphate. OR Number of Calcium ions in Calcium Carbonate. I believe it has something to do with change in EN. Asked by James K - Thu Dec 6 00:12:42 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. 1: ammonium is NH4 with a +1 charge phosphate is PO4 with a -3 charge ..so u have a +1 n a -3 charge..they need to equal u multiply ammonium by 3 to get a +3 charge since u have more than u atom u need ( ) to keep it separate ur answer is (NH4)3PO4 2: calcium= Ca +2 carbonate=CO3 -2 they equal.. ur answer: CaCo3 tadah!! lol Answered by im like omg! - Thu Dec 6 00:21:52 2007 What is the net ionic equation for the reaction in my experiment in which the following ions are detected?
Q. The ions were a) CO3 (2- ions), b) SO4 (2-ions), and c) Cl-. My solution has these ions but I don't understand how to answer the question? Asked by randytange - Thu Feb 21 07:12:42 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. CO3 (2-) + 2H+ ---> CO2 + 3/2 H2O SO4(2-) + 4H+ + 2e- ---> SO2 + 2H2O 2Cl- --> Cl2 + 2e- I think these are the answers, they are half equations and basically you need to find which is the reduction eq and the oxidation eq to find the net ionic equation.
