The International Standard Book Number, or ISBN , is a unique, numeric commercial book identifier based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code created by Gordon Foster, now Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin, for the booksellers and stationers W.H. Smith and others in 1966. The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO 2108. (However, the 9-digit SBN code was used in the United Kingdom until 1974.) Currently, the ISO’s TC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the ISBN. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978. Since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland EAN-13s. Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure; however, this is usually later rectified. A similar numeric identifier, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), identifies periodical publications such as magazines. From Wikipedia under the

I'm not really sure if you can buy them that cheap or not, some sites advertise they sell stuff associated to isbn but it's not the actual number. If you are in the U.S., the only legitimate way to buy an ISBN is through Bowker. Although they sell single numbers, they are expensive. You are better off buying a block of 10. Even if you only plan to publish one book, you may (1) change your mind, (2) publish a second edition or (3) publish in additional formats, such as hardcover, paperback, audio, ebook, etc. Each will require a new ISBN. If someone offers to sell you an individual ISBN from their block, DO NOT buy it. The ISBN identifies the publisher. The person you bought the ISBN from will get orders and inquiries about your book because they will be listed as the publisher of record. Once you have the ISBN, you will need to get a barcode of the number. Q. I am starting my own publishing company and am putting together a book. I know I need both UPC and ISBN numbers, but they seem to be from different places and I was wondering how they fit together? Can I buy the UPC and the ISBN seperately and will that be okay?
