Jeep hard to start when the engine is cold?
Q. I have a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When the engine has sat for a while, it will barely turn over. This started about a week ago. After it has run for a few minutes, it will fire up like the battery is fully charged. If it sits for 10 minutes or 2 days, it starts as if the battery is dead. The battery is fairly new (about 3 months old). Any ideas as to what is wrong?

A. Try charging the battery with and external charger, then starting it cold. If it works then your alternator is not charging the battery well - or your battery is not taking the charge (even on new battery). I noticed that sometimes my trips are all so short the batteries never really recover (charge). So if I charge then using external charger, I can see it take about 1 hour or more to charge them. Then the cars usually starts much faster (like 1 second instead fo 5 seconds of cranking). Then it is good for another year or so. Good Luck...

How different does it feel to drive a jeep if you have been driving a car all life ?
Q. I have had a car all my life. Now I am thinking of buying a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. What are the differences between driving a car and a truck ( Jeep). How is it different maintenance wise. I know it is easier for Jeep to get by on snow. What's the mileage like, ease of driving, comfort level etc. I shall be very grateful for any experiences.

A. It'll probably strike you as a bit strange at first. My Jetta is very agile, low to the ground, zippy, and (because it's a TDI), gets amazing mileage of 46+mpg. My Laredo, on the other hand, is not quite as agile, higher off the ground so you can see the road better in snowy conditions, can be zippy, and gets about 20mpg at best. The Cherokee has a very nice ride and does real well in snow. Afterall, it IS a Jeep! As far as maintenance goes, it really depends on what you're used to. My Jetta has been virtually maintenance free. My Laredo has had a hiccup here and there, but mine is a '97, while you're looking one built on a new platform. No so easy of a comparison there. Do you want an SUV that will easily go over 100K? Yes, a… [cont.]

Is it possible to relace a jeep cherokee drive chain on NP249 with removing the transfer case?
Q. Hello, I have a 95 jeep grand cherokee with an NP249 "quadra-trak" transfer case. Is it possible to access and replace the drive chain without removing the case from the Jeep? I can't pull the extension housing off because it is held in place by a locking ring which I doubt I can access while it is still on the vechicle. Thanks!

Q. I am thinking of buying a fairly new car 2004-2006 and I was wondering what the difference is between Jeep TJs and the Jeep Rubicons in general. And also, what are your guys` thoughts on Jeeps; do they run well, are they strong etc.. Thank You.

A. Terry H and luckydagger covered the technical differences. In practice, the stock TJ will cover what most drivers will want. They're drivable on the road and provide a good off-road capability. If you get into some serious off-roading, the TJ needs a few modifications to take the abuse you're going to give it - like protection for key components underneath like the transfer case, gas tank, etc, some protection for the body, recovery points so you can tow it out of trouble. Then, you want to minimize the chance of getting into trouble in the first place, so you need bigger tires, axle lockers (at least for one axle), and a lift. Your serious off-roaders usually go with at least 33 inch tires, which means the body has to be lifted in… [cont.]

What would taking the carpet out of my Jeep do to the audio quality?
Q. I have a Jeep Wrangler, and I'm about to put a full sound system in, dual 12" sub woofers, etc. I want to take the carpet out of my Jeep, would that diminish the sound quality? (I already know its an open air vehicle and I'll be losing a lot of sound and what not), would I be better off leaving the carpet? What about a rubber liner? Rhino lining? Or nothing at all?
Asked by saintxxjimmy - Sat Sep 26 13:30:40 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Without the carpet you may notice a little more noise, both from the road and from your stereo. You may also have a little bit of rattling. Overall I don't think it would make a huge difference. If you added rhino lining or similar material that should help to dampen the metal a little bit which would improve sound quality. It would also be durable for everyday use. Good Luck!!!

Q. Is anyone a male driver around 16 who drives a jeep wrangler and knows how much on average the insurance will be?

A. well is depends on your credit scrore. and the model , year , style of the jeep that you're gonna drive on . call around the insurance company and ask for a quote .. they will be happy to give it to you . i would recommend that you should go under your parent policy. being a new driver is so expensive to get insurance . almost cost you a monthly car payment . my guess is around $130 and up per month just for liability only . good luck

How many more miles should my Jeep Liberty be worth?
Q. I bought a Jeep liberty 2003. 4WD. I have 114,000 mi on it. I drive to work 55 mi round trip every day on a state highway. I change the oil every 3000 mi. I have had it serviced pretty regularly. It runs well. Are these reliable vehicles. My daughters new husband told her it was rated low on the Consumer report. How many miles can I expect to get out of it? Should I be planning on getting a new vehicle in the next 24 mo?

A. If it's taken care of well it can last several more yrs and well over 250,000 miles, what I might be thinking of is the timing and having it checked maybe done soon on it.Also I'd be wondering when was the last time the transmission fluid and filter was changed using the proper recommended factory fluids and kits.Keep in mind that certain chemical additives are in the transmission fluids on those vehicles and they can wear down causing lots of shifting or bucking or stuttering or kicking or odd shifting problems so it's another good reason to have the transmission fluid and filter changed I'd say every 60 to 75,000 miles or every 3 to 5 years depending on how much you drive the vehicle and in your case it not be a bad idea to change them… [cont.]

A. At least 5 grand. (if there is nothing wrong with the engine or transmission and the tires aren't bald.)

Q. When I put my Jeep into gear it takes about 15-30 seconds to shift into gear and then after is drives for about 30 seconds it makes a grinding noise then it will slip out of gear. The transmission fluid is pink and does not smell like it is burning. Whould you think it is a transmission problem or transfer case problem? Any ideas on anything I can do to repair insead of getting a new transmissision or t-case? I thank you all or help.

A. The problem is tranny related, not the transfer case. Take it to the shop for diagnosis, may be mechanical, may be electrical.

A. you need to drive in city traffic, normal driving, and highway so the computer can relearn. if you turn your key to on [do not engage starter] the check engine is on , if it stays on for a minite your ready for smog. if it starts to blink after 15-20 secs then turns on steady your not ready for smog, drive around town some more, and take a short ride on a highway

We have replaced several parts on out 1997 Jeep cherokee and it continues to cut off any suggestions?
Q. The jeep stalls out and sputters and then just cuts off. We have taken it to be placed on a diagnostic machine and it has said that the o2 sensor needed to be replaced and the TPS sensor as well. We have replaced all of these parts and it acts like it is fixed for a day or two and then we have the same problems again. We have also replaced the ignition coil and the fuel regulator, but we are still having the same problem.

A. Very easy! I have owned my Cherokee since new in 1995 and it is approaching 260,000 miles, so I have some experience tinkering with it. You have one of two possible failures. A) Crankshaft Position Sensor. Located at the top of the transmission bellhousing on the drivers side. A little trick to change, but doable by a semi-amatuer! B) Camshaft Position Sensor. Located inside the Distributor. Easy to change. Buy them both and carry a spare for the future under the back seat! Later, Bruce

A. MR K- I owned a Wrangler for a number of years and really liked it, but it got about 18 miles a gallon, didn't have a great heater and was a pain with road noise. It was impossible to have a conversation with anyone while driving; however, getting off-road was magical. I drove it all over upper Michigan and once drove from Harbor Springs to Mackinaw only touching asphalt a half dozen times. When you have the top down, the doors off and the sun is out. It is fantastic. No trunk is a bummer, but I never had anything stolen from mine ... and I didn't have locks. Gas mileage is simply terrible. This is what happens with Wranglers ... young guys who are accountants and lawyers and ad guys buy them because, "they always wanted a jeep" they… [cont.]

How to turn off the overhead lights on a jeep with the doors off?
Q. I have a 2005 soft top jeep wrangler. When I take off the doors the interior light stays on. Does anyone know how to get it off when I have my doors off.

A. You can get clips for a few bucks that hold the door switches in to keep the lights off. If you have your doors off a lot, wire in a switch to turn them on and off. You'll need to be sure it cuts power to both door switches.

How difficult is it to change a blower motor in a 2002 jeep?
Q. My blower motor in my 2002 jeep wrangler burned out. I have changed a blower motor out in a Ford Explore before, but the motors location on the jeep is inside the vehicle as opposed to the Explorer. Is this something I can do myself, or does it require special tools and training?

A. To Remove: NOTE: The blower motor is located below the right side of the instrument panel. The blower motor can be removed without having to remove the instrument panel or the HVAC housing. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Remove the screws that fasten the PCM to the mounting bracket on the engine compartment side of the dash panel. Unplug the connector for the blower motor wire harness. Remove the screws that fasten the blower motor and wheel assembly to the HVAC housing. Turn and tilt the blower motor unit as needed for clearance to remove the blower motor and wheel from the HVAC housing. To Install: NOTE: Failure to install the blower motor assembly correctly could result in an air leak or the blower motor… [cont.]
