Jesus of Nazareth (c 4 BC/BCEc 30 AD/CE)—also known as Jesus Christ or occasionally Jesus the Christ—is the central figure of Christianity. Within most Christian denominations Jesus is venerated as the Son of God and as God incarnate. Christians also view him as the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament; however, Judaism rejects these claims. Islam considers Jesus a prophet and also the Messiah while several other religions revere him in some way.

The principal sources of information regarding Jesus' life and teachings are the four canonical gospels, especially the Synoptic Gospels, though some scholars argue that other texts (such as the Gospel of Thomas) are as relevant as the canonical gospels to the historical Jesus. Most critical scholars in the fields of history and biblical studies believe that some parts of the New Testament are useful for reconstructing Jesus' life, agreeing that he was a Jew who was regarded as a teacher and healer. They also generally accept that he was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman Prefect of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, on the charge of sedition against the Roman Empire. Aside from these few conclusions, academic studies remain inconclusive about the chronology, the central message of Jesus' preaching, his social class, cultural environment, and religious orientation. Scholars offer competing descriptions of Jesus as the awaited Messiah, as a self-described Messiah, as the leader of an apocalyptic movement, as an itinerant sage, as a charismatic healer, and as the founder of an independent religious movement.

Christian views of Jesus (see also Christology) center on the belief that Jesus is divine, is the Messiah whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament, and that he was resurrected after his crucifixion. Theologian and bishop Lesslie Newbigin says "the whole of Christian teaching would fall to the ground if it were the case that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus were not events in real history but stories told to illustrate truths which are valid apart from these happenings." Christians do predominantly believe that Jesus is the "Son of God" (generally meaning that he is God the Son, the second person in the Trinity) who came to provide salvation and reconciliation with God by his death for their sins. Other Christian beliefs include Jesus' virgin birth, performance of miracles, ascension into Heaven, and a future Second Coming. While the doctrine of the Trinity is accepted by most Christians, a few groups reject the doctrine of the Trinity, wholly or partly, as non-scriptural.

In Islam, Jesus (Arabic: عيسى‎, commonly transliterated as Isa) is considered one of God's important prophets, a bringer of scripture, and a worker of miracles. Jesus is also called "Messiah", but Islam does not teach that he was divine. Islam teaches that Jesus ascended bodily to heaven without experiencing the crucifixion and resurrection, rather than the traditional Christian belief of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Why would Jesus make himself so unapparent to people, and set up a belief requirement with dire consequences?
Q. What is the value of this arrangement? So people have to be of an age and in a cultural setting where the opportunity exists to hear about Jesus and then decide if they believe in him, and if yes live forever in bliss or if no burn forever? Why wouldn't God just want all information about spirituality outside of life and forgiveness of sins during life made easily available?

A. Jesus spent 30 years on earth making Himself apparent. He lived to die. Read what the eyewitness, the writers of the New Testament, said about Him. Excellent question!!! You surely sense that you are not alone in wondering about this "arrangement". The arrangement doesn't make any sense does it? Many have died who never heard of Jesus. Many are raised in environments that don't believe in Jesus, so what are their chances. Many have heard of Jesus but they have also heard of many other religious leaders and don't know who to believe. The parents you are born to will have a definite affect on their belief system. My conclusion has been that there is something obviously wrong with this picture. The piece of this picture that makes… [cont.]

What is the difference between Jesus and a vampire?
Q. I mean both rose from the dead, and both ask you to drink blood to gain life after death. Jesus just asks you to drink his blood rather than others, but it makes you think, doesn't it?

How do we know Jesus had a long beard and hair?
Q. I would imagine that in the filthy Judea climate a man would want to shave his head and beard. Why should be think that Jesus looked like what today we would consider an greasy hippie or a vagabond? Why not have Jesus well shaved and groomed, and wearing some high level duds?

A. There are many images of Jewish men painted on the synagogues of De Europa and other places, and that combined with references from ancient Jewish writings give scholars a pretty good idea of the hair and beard styles common in first century Judaism. In general, Jewish men wore beards, and kept their hair pulled back in a loose ponytail. (By the way, that is one of the arguments that people use for the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin - the hair and beard are accurate for a first century Jewish male.) Shaved heads were forbidden in the Torah, and shaved beards were interpreted as open Hellenism (which was a hot topic in Judea and Babylon).
