Entering high school, joining Kumon?
Q. I'm going to be in 9th grade this fall and I was wondering. . Has anyone been in the Kumon program while in high school? How beneficial was it for you and what were the experiences? If I decide to take Kumon is it really beneficial since I'm starting late and not earlier? Also, how beneficial is the Kumon Reading program? Reading is where I struggle most, and I was wondering if it would really help. Sorry for all the questions, I'm really not sure about joining Kumon or not. Thanks for the help!

Is My Life too Much...?
Q. Okay like these days or should I say ever since I joined high school, life has been tough for me and more stressful and also with mixed emotions. I'm fine with hw. My school really doesn't give a lot, and I'm a freshman in no AP classes but still straight A's. On every weekday besides Wednesday and Monday, Thursday, I take 2 hours of kendo after school. On Mondays and Thursdays, I work 5 hours grading work and helping kids at kumon. Every Friday, I have a 40 minute piano lesson afterschool.. On most Sundays, my mom takes me to this english teacher's house who tutors me. She teaches as long as she likes, 1-2.5 hours. Should I like do something, I feel worn out everyday. Kendo and Kumon is something I've recently joined. I like kendo… [cont.]

A. You are right. Everything on your list will help you get where you want to go in the future. But what are you doing to slow down and relax? What do you enjoy? For instance, if you had an activity you looked forward to doing every Sunday after your lesson, it might help. It is good to have the goal of keeping your grades up, working for extra money. I admire and respect that. But remember the importance of stopping and doing things that you simply enjoy. Books, movies, music, art, it doesn't matter what it is, but that it is relaxing and not about building your portfolio. Just for you and just for fun. See what you can add in every day. Even small things will make a difference. And congratulations on your drive and focus. That… [cont.]

A. 1. Just find a nice quiet place, bring your iPod & study for a few hours. You should have no distractions so I'm sure you'll be fine. (: 2. Don't act flirtatious towards crushers, you should make it obvious that you're not interested if you don't flirt. 3. Ignoring is the best policy. If you don't talk to her, she should get the message & leave you alone. (: 4. Go shopping, everyone loves shopping once in a while. Pick a few new outfits that you adore & pull them off! They don't have to mega expensive - just ones you like, who cares if no-one ese likes them? & I like my hair long. (:

Ivy League?!?! PLEASE HELP?
Q. I just started grade nine three weeks ago, and I've been doing a lot of research. What should I do to get into Ivy League? - I want to be involved in extracurriculars, but I'm not very good at sports. - What can I join outside of school? - Will the IB diploma help? - Will starting a club at my school (it's really small so we don't have much stuff) help? - Will working at Kumon help? Just ANYTHING. Please, help me. I want to join the tennis team, but I missed out on that this year... I'm actually not too bad at tennis. My grades are great -- last year I had about a 96 average and topped all my classes. I'm doing a lot of grade 10 and 11 courses as well, so I don't think I'll need to worry about grades too much. Anything at all, please!

A. The Ivy League schools have cachet for the ignorant - for the level of people making admissions decision, the so called "ivies" are not all that special and it is distressing to see how much effort is wasted in grasping for an empty prize. If you parents or grandparents are US Senators, you can get into Yale and Harvard, just like George W Bush. Does that help put this desire of yours into perspective? Some of the best schools in the country are not in the athletic league called the Ivy League. Both the Princeton Review and the College Board have free online services. Put in your personal information and see what schools are recommended for you. Then, apply to at least three of the best schools that are definitely interested in students… [cont.]
