Is Kumon a good place to improve your English?
Q. If you're poor in English, is Kumon a good place to improve it? Does Kumon improve your writing skills?
Asked by shhh! - Tue Jul 7 13:17:20 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes it definetly does. I'm enrolled right now, and since I started, (math & reading), my grades sky rocketed. It does reading/english and math. I went from a B/C kid to a A/A+ student. So do it, and you'll see a improvement within 2 weeks.

How fast can you go in Kumon?
Q. I'm told that Kumon is a self directed program for math fluency. I have a 10 year old who can do the math accurately, but I can't seem to get him fast. How long does the program take to help in speed? I'm just told kids have to do these little packets. If they complete them within in a few days, do they move on? Can anyone give an example of each level's questions?
Asked by Ransomed - Fri Mar 27 06:16:14 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, there is a certain time limit for the levels. The levels go for A to N. They give you a 10 page packet(for level A and B) and a 5 page packet(for level C, D, E, and so on). You are supposed to do 1 packet per day, or unless in level B, they give you 2 packets per each day in the weekend. I got in speed really quickly. I have passed 4 levels in the past 4-5 months. The time limit for the packets vary. it is usually 20-30 minutes per packet. It'll probably take about 2 months for him to get fast. They give you 30-50 packets per level.

What is your opinion of Kumon Learning?
Q. I have recently started working as an assistant at a Kumon learning center and I am wondering if it is worth the parents' expense. At first look, it seems good--children learning independently at their own pace. But then, on second look, it appears to me that parents are paying for "busywork" in the form of worksheets without any preliminary or supporting instruction. Based on my observaion, the premise is that children will learn on their own: works in theory, but not necessarily in fact. I'll make no more comments until I see some feedback.

A. I'm also an assistant at Kumon, and as someone who's formerly done Kumon as a kid, I can say that it's worked pretty darn well. Math abides by set rules, and repetitive practice of these rules will result in a pretty math proficient kid. Especially at a young age, constant repetition will ensure success in math at older ages as well. Well it did for me, and many of my friends xD Of course, the student must actually sit down, read the examples, understand them, and apply them. A lot of times, since it's independent learning, kids will cut corners and avoid work a lot, resulting in learning nothing. On the other hand, Kumon English was largely useless for me. Being able to write well is presumably the goal of Kumon Language, but repetition… [cont.]

Has anyone taken a test for Kumon in order to work there?
Q. I am trying to get a tutoring job at Kumon for the end of the summer or this fall. I am going in this week to take some sort of test in order to pass the first round of applying for my job. Has anyone taken this test? What kind of things will be on it?
Asked by Brittany - Sat Jun 21 11:35:26 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Kumon centers are independently owned, so Kumon instructors have the choice of who works at there center(s). Each instructor wants different things for his or her center. When I applied for my job, my boss never made me take a test. She was looking for someone to relieve her job a little bit and did not really need me to grade the work or hope students if they needed it. However, she has said that in the beginning, she usually only had honor students working for her. Now, she is much more relaxed with who she hires. The center that you are applying for a job at just probably wants to know where you are. If you can not help the kids or understand the work you are grading, what good would you be working there? The test that you are… [cont.]

A. I was in Kumon for around... 6 years or more. I took math, but i say that it has helped me in a way as it improved my speed and accuracy in solving math problems. My cousin took the English one, and from the way he's doing now, i can say that he improved. basically, Kumon (if ever you are allowed to enroll) will start you off at a lower level (like me for example, i was grade 4 but i started with grade 2 math.) and from there, you have to work on sheets (200 usually) and then you take an achievement test. if you pass, then you move on to the next level (depicted by letters). if you don't pass, they're going to see where you got the most mistakes, and from there, they're going to review you in those parts before you're allowed to take the… [cont.]

Q. Out of a 50 question test, how many do you have to get right in order to pass the test? Thank you very much!! :]

A. Haha, I went to Kumon before...I only did math and I think I went up K level before quitting... Anyways, they are going to look at how much time you spent on the test and how many questions you are going to get correct. It's like a graph and they will see what group you fall in (I think there are either 3 or 4 groups). If you place in 1 or 2 I am pretty sure they'll let you pass. Well, I don't know if they have changed anything since, but it should still be pretty similar.

Is a Kumon "Center Director" another name for a franchisee/instructor?
Q. I have a phone interview with Kumon soon for a "Center Director" position. Is this position different from the franchisee/instructor position?
Asked by theblueroom - Wed May 20 04:39:03 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In order to become an instructor, you need to qualify for the position by the actual company. If you are calling a center, then that center wants you to fulfill that position. After you qualify by the company and go through training, you can open your own center. That is the only way to become a center instructor. It takes about six months to a year to become an actual instructor. Working in someone's center is different. Each center has their own positions and they vary from center to center. You are not really supposed to check out any of the students or assign work to them since you are not the actual instructor, but some centers still do this.

What is the time limit for kumon level f?
Q. the time limit for kumon level f when you're doing 10 pages?
Asked by Line - Sun Sep 7 05:11:08 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The standard completion time for level F is four to five minutes, giving you forty to fifty minutes for ten pages. A note to the other person, I completed ten pages per day until the end of level F. I work in a center and if the student does not mind spending that long on the subject, then it is okay to do that many worksheets. You should only be concerned when the work is taking almost two hours. Then it would be time to cut down the pages and maybe go back a few sets for review. Doing ten pages on level F does not mean that you have a bad instructor since you should be working together to find the right amount that works for you.

Why do parents force kids to do kumon?
Q. Im 12 years old, in grade 6, both in Level H, or grade 8 math and reading. Its annoying, and gets in my way when im doing my homework, and it piles up all the time, and i never get a vacation! Why do we have to do this?
Asked by bbxchan - Fri May 4 23:18:17 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I really think that parents want them to succeed at school and to build confidence in the classroom.I I think though that kids should not be filled with so many activities after school .It burns them out. Kids need time to be kids which is more beneficial at this stage of their lives.

How much does a tutoring center (Sylvan, Kumon, etc) cost?
Q. I'm especially interested in how much they cost per hour. Sources would be great too. Thanks!

A. Call and ask. It can be different by location and company and tutoring program. Huntington Learning was about $65 an hour for ISEE tutoring in the LA area. That seems to be a common price for similar services at tutoring facilities.

Can you tell me your experiences with Kumon?
Q. I have my 8 year old son going to Kumon for Reading and it seems to me they only give kids booklet after booklet to repeat words, even in the weekends. I guess I expected the program to be more interactive, more "reading"- like, especially when they charge 95.00!! per month. Anyway, I wanted to hear some of your experiences with this institution.
Asked by Clamys - Wed Aug 27 15:42:47 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My mother sent me there in year 5 because I was struggling with mathematics (and still am to this day) and I don't think Kumon helped me at all. The work I was given was difficult, repetitive and no matter how many times I was instructed as to what to do, I simply couldn't understand it. The work was also completely different mathematics to what I was studying in school and I spent most of my time at the Kumon centre reciting my five times tables and repeatedly stamping my Kumon Card (more stamps means you fill it faster, and if you complete the card, you win a money voucher.) They tried to make it fun and enjoyable, but I hated it and dreaded having to go to the centre every weekday with my brother who also struggled with maths. Plus,… [cont.]

does anyone know how much it cost to send a child to kumon learning centers?
Q. i checked their website and the only amount that I see is that some centers may charge a $30 to $50 registration fee. Is there a monthly fee as well?
Asked by Babe - Tue May 26 01:05:49 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Everyone who have answered so far are wrong. The prices differ from center to center, but they are usually in the $100.00 to $120.00 range per subject. There is a registration fee and some centers may even ask you to put down a deposit for the last month's tution. However, the inital testing is free and you have no obligation to sign up after your child(ren) take the test(s). It really depends on the center since some centers do offer the ability to pay for six months and even a year. They may even offer a discount if you do this. Otherwise, you are charged monthly.

A. yes you can still go. I'm an employee at kumon and there are a few kids that have their parents go to so they can help their kids with their work. I'm pretty sure that they will take anyone as long as you pay them btw. if your still hesitant about going, its nothing to be ashamed about. you want to get better at math so you should go. a year at kumon can really make a difference, trust me, ive seen it happen before.

Q. I'm thinking of accepting a job at kumon as a tutor, but I'm curious to know what they really have to do, and how much teaching is involved for the tutor. Hope someone can help.
Asked by princess - Wed Sep 24 09:23:43 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are not directly helping the kids. Kumon is a self-learning center and although the kids may get help if they are needed, the correct way to help them is by referring them back to the examples. Most positions at a Kumon center is to grade work. There are some centers that do things differently, but for the most part, centers follow the regular center routine. I would be able to help you if I knew your age and what position it is that you are applying for.

Is Noetic Learning similar to Kumon Math?
Q. I was going to enroll my son to Kumon Math. A friend of mine told me about Noetic Learning (www.noetic-learning.com) . She said they offer similiar program but is offering online with a fraction of the cost. Is that right?
Asked by Stacy - Sat Aug 25 23:08:53 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I did some research on the program for a friend of mine. Noetic Learning is a new but a promising program for children and parents. Worksheets are online-based, interactive and graded immediately upon submission. Every child has to take an assessment test prior to start the program. And worksheets are assigned based on a child's math skills instead of his grade level. My suggestion is to give the program a try, It is only $19 a month after all.

A. I have no idea what the other person is talking about. I am a current Kumon assistant so I could better answer your question. However, do you mean Level I or Level L? It is depends for what subject - math or reading? In all, basically the questions come directly from the packets. If you do the worksheets correctly (without cheating), you should do very well on the test. I would not worry about it too much. If you do poorly, a good instructor will only give you review on what you need help on.

A. Yes i was also in Kumon for about 2 years... You learn things sooo fast and you get really good at the things you are practicing. I was able to do multiplication and divition alot better then anyone in my class. BUT it really didnt help me that much in the long run. But it helped me learn my tables very fast. I would do Kumon untill your child learns the skills you want him/her to learn. Then take them out because i was in there for far to long. Kumon is very repetative first they do adding subtarcting multiplying dividing.. Then they do things like multiplying 3 diget numbers and dividing 3 diget numbers SO what im saying is kumon does help but once your child has learned what he/she needs to learn take them outta there Good Luck : [cont.]
