My daughter is clever, what can I do to help??? Assessments????
Q. Hiya guys, My daughter is 5, she is extremely bright, always has been. She was 7 weeks prem and has a few health issues, such as a heart condition and hearing issues, yet she is in the top 2% of her class in a mainstream school. She is reading 2 school books every day, and even the teacher has expressed wonder at how bright she is. I am a teaching assistant so most of our playtime and such is educational to a point. But is there anything more I can do for her? I looked in Kumon but it's incredibly expensive. Is there any associations that can do assessments or do you think that would be too much for her? We get to a point where she's begging to get her school work out, and I have to say no because I don't want to burn her out! I… [cont.]

A. I have a daughter who was incredibly bright from birth. She walked at nine months and talked fluently at two. She was moved up to work with the children a year older than herself at five and was soon on the top table. I never pushed her, only offered opportunities for extra curricula activities. She will suffer burnout if you make her school work an issue. Let her do it if she wants to. I don't think testing is a good idea and has no benefits except for making them think they are special and the only people they are special to are their parents and grandparents.

Help with math........?
Q. I am an eighth grade student at a K-8 school. I do well in Spanish (B's and A's) and do extremely well most of the time in Language Arts, Literature, Social Studies, and Science (A-'s to A+'s). Math is my weak point. The only time I ever got an A on my report card was the end of the year in third grade. Since then, my average grade is between a C- and a B-, never any higher then that. In eighth grade, I had an A in Math because I miraculously aced a quiz and a retake of a test. But since I got an F on a quiz, I have not been doing well, and about 80% of all my homework assignments (which are not put into the grade book) are failing grades - from the beginning of the year to now. It takes me a while to understand a concept. I have… [cont.]
