does anyone know how much it cost to send a child to kumon learning centers?
Q. i checked their website and the only amount that I see is that some centers may charge a $30 to $50 registration fee. Is there a monthly fee as well?
Asked by Babe - Tue May 26 01:05:49 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Everyone who have answered so far are wrong. The prices differ from center to center, but they are usually in the $100.00 to $120.00 range per subject. There is a registration fee and some centers may even ask you to put down a deposit for the last month's tution. However, the inital testing is free and you have no obligation to sign up after your child(ren) take the test(s). It really depends on the center since some centers do offer the ability to pay for six months and even a year. They may even offer a discount if you do this. Otherwise, you are charged monthly.

Do Kumon centers hire instructors as employees, or do you have to buy a franchise?
Q. Do Kumon centers hire instructors as employees, or do you have to buy a franchise?
Asked by Bfract - Sat May 2 19:37:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually the only way to become an instructor is to buy into the franchise. You still have to go through all of the training and everything. However, there may be some cases in which you can take over a center. But I am sure that you would have to be able to show them that you have the financial background. Kumon does hire people to work for their company, but you would not be in a center.

What is your opinion of Kumon Learning?
Q. I have recently started working as an assistant at a Kumon learning center and I am wondering if it is worth the parents' expense. At first look, it seems good--children learning independently at their own pace. But then, on second look, it appears to me that parents are paying for "busywork" in the form of worksheets without any preliminary or supporting instruction. Based on my observaion, the premise is that children will learn on their own: works in theory, but not necessarily in fact. I'll make no more comments until I see some feedback.

A. I'm also an assistant at Kumon, and as someone who's formerly done Kumon as a kid, I can say that it's worked pretty darn well. Math abides by set rules, and repetitive practice of these rules will result in a pretty math proficient kid. Especially at a young age, constant repetition will ensure success in math at older ages as well. Well it did for me, and many of my friends xD Of course, the student must actually sit down, read the examples, understand them, and apply them. A lot of times, since it's independent learning, kids will cut corners and avoid work a lot, resulting in learning nothing. On the other hand, Kumon English was largely useless for me. Being able to write well is presumably the goal of Kumon Language, but repetition… [cont.]

confused with kumon?!?
Q. OK, well you know in normal schools, other kids do the same work as you. ive heard that in kumon, you learn at your own level. but ive also heard that you learn in a big classroom, like in normal schools with other kids. and that you are given worksheets to do in a time limit. -if you're learning at your own level, around other kids, doing worksheets, are you doing the worksheets at your own level, or is everyone doing the same one? -does the teacher like, handout a different leveled worksheet for each student? o_O -and, are the other kids in the same classroom as you in the same level as you, or same age as you, or what? -ive also heard that you go to the actual kumon centers twice a week, and you do daily worksheets in between… [cont.]

A. Kumon is just worksheets...and worksheets and worksheets. Every level is 200 sheets/pages. The head instructor makes you repeat them over and over again if you don't do them in 15 min or less for 4 pages. Even if you do them in less than 15min you still will do the same worksheet at least 3 times. Its the Asian way of teaching things. You keep doing it over and over again until you get it right.

Kumon learning center?
Q. Ok well I am in grade 11 and having trouble with maths. So my dad decided to enroll me in Kumon and paid for 3 months. First day they gave me fractions? I am doing University level grade 11 maths (Quadratic functions, equations, advanced algebra) and they gave me fractions???/ Will they accelerate the levels and get to high school maths and actually help me in grade 11 and grade 12 or are they going to teach me basics? I am really worried and feel awkward because it seems like I am in a kids program. Will they help me get good marks in grade 12 or grade 11 ... or what plzz help???
Asked by Arjun W - Fri Mar 14 20:21:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Haha, Kumon is not the best place to go if you need immediate help with math. They will not accelerate you because they believe practice is perfect. If you need help with what you are currently learning, I suggest you to quit Kumon and join a different tutoring center. They are going to continue to teach you the basics until you can do them fast.

How much/hour on average does an assistant at a learning center make- preferably in GA?
Q. I'm 19 and just started working at Kumon learning center in Georgia. My parents are unhappy with how much I make hourly, but it's more than I've made at other places that I have worked at in the past. The last job I worked at was over a yr. ago; so, I've basically just been going to school and living off of them. I just hate asking my parents for money. I wish they could at least just be happy for me that I'm working too now, you know? If i'm okay with how much I make hourly, they should be too. (Sorry had to vent.) Anyways... I want to know how much a student should make on ave. working at a learning center? Also, I just started yesterday; so, would it be weird to ask for one or should I just ask when I would get one? Or would… [cont.]

A. You'd probably make slightly over minimum wage. If you ask the other people working there you'd get a sense of whether you're being treated fairly.

A. I work as an administrator for a tutoring agency, Plus Plus Tutoring ( ) and had to do some research about the competition. Out of these three, Mathnasium appears to be the most affordable at around $18/hour.

A. Maybe if you don't answer peoples questions so mean. Telling that person that cuts themself that they should go die?..Do you realize they might take that to heart and actually do it. I'm not kidding, a girl I knew killed herself because someone she didn't even know told her to go kill herself and she was very depressed. Think about what you say before you actually say it. But back to your question...no.

Can I work at a learning center like Sylvan with a Master's degree or do I have to have teacher certification?
Q. I have an English M.A., and I have taught classes on the university level. I have also worked for 5+ years as an English Center tutor in university English Centers. Now, I want to work as a tutor for a Learning Center (e.g., Kumon, Sylvan, etc.). The website says I need teacher certification to do this. Is this true? I thought I had co-workers with B.A.s or M.A. who worked part-time at Sylvan. I know they weren't certified. If it is true, what is the best and quickest way for me to get certification in Alabama? Is there any way to do this without going back to college for a fifth year program?
Asked by Whedonesque - Mon Apr 2 10:07:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All Sylvan Academic Reading instructors (2nd - 12th grade reading program) MUST be certified teachers in their specific state. You could certainly work at Sylvan as another instructor. I would suggest Homework Support, Study Skills, Advanced Reading (Speed Reading) or even their SAT program. If you are proficient in math, you could also do instruction in math as well, especially with elementary level. If you are as qualified as it sounds you are, you would be a great asset to a center. However, in keeping up with the promises Sylvan makes to parents, you would not (or aren't supposed to be) allowed to teach reading without a teaching certificate. Hope this helps! I would definitely call your local center and inquire.
