What do you think of Kumon and similar maths programmes?
Q. Do you think its pushy parents that put their children through these things?
Asked by thatmadlass - Mon Sep 4 05:40:35 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It can help, particularly if your child is being educated through a state school... but don't be too pushy as your child will end up resenting it and will push back against it. I'm so awful at maths, that I was quite pleased when the teachers said my son has a real empathy for maths and science... I briefly looked into Kumon and it looks like a good program but only if your child is genuinely interested... I see so many mothers pushing their children into everything other than having a childhood... so any out of school activities make sure there is something fun for them to enjoy too.

Kumon - Reading or Maths for 3.5yo?
Q. I casually took my 3.5yo girl to Kumon for an assessment. From the test, she did very well in Maths (Kindly Level) I was happy but very surprised considering she only goes to preschool once a week. The supervisor was very impressed and recommended her to take the Maths. I didn't have any intention for her to do Kumon at the beginning, but now..we're thinking if it's worth-ed to start of with English, since her Maths skill is quite advance. Then later on switch to Maths, as it's too expensive to do both subjects, also she's too young to be given so much works. What do you think? Is it too early for her to learn how to read now? Is Kumon offer good Reading program? Thank you in advance

A. At the center I work at, we take kids as young two-and-a-half years old. It may seem young, but this is the best time to start them because their minds are like sponges. Thus, providing them the best time to learn and absorb things. (Think of your child always trying to mimic you or say/do something that they have seen someone else or you do.) My sister is four years old and I had my mom just start her in the program for both math and reading. She currently goes to preschool two days a week, but she loves doing the Kumon homework. It is not too much since the work is suited just for her and it is easy. The starting levels are very easy and require you to be one-on-one with your child. It is not until she gets to first grade level… [cont.]

Is it a good idea to continue with Kumon?
Q. My three kids 7,8, 10 are taking Kumon classes in Maths but they complain a lot about it. Has Kumon helped anyone?
Asked by Alpha Bravo Charlie - Sat Mar 8 11:43:16 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. There are better programs out there other than Kumon. I started going in the third grade and haven't seen results in the first year I went. Kumon is only good if you start at a young age and continue going for many years, other than that, it isn't so useful. If your kids need help in subjects they are dealing with right now, another program would be better. Kumon focuses on practice and it's hard to get into the next level.

A. Well, I don't have any worksheets so sorry. But basically the Kumon Method is learning through repitition. Not to the point where you memorize it, but where you know what you're doing. At lower levels, 1+1 and 2x3 are to sharpen your skills so that you're insanely fast when it comes to those. And higher levels where they start to teach you hard stuff is where the method kicks in. Basically, to learn it, they'll give you an example. you follow the example step by step You fail the worksheet, they make you repeat it. Instructor teaches you how to do it. No better way to learn than through your own mistakes. Take worksheet again. Fail again. This time instructor helps you hammer in fine points. Take worksheet again. Pass. Make you repeat.… [cont.]

A. I don't think you can. When I was in that program I just did the questions, you will get them done 10 times faster if you do the questions now.your just wasting your time asking this question and waiting for an answer.

Can Adults go to Kumon learning centers?
Q. I'm 18 and I am border-line illiterate in Math. Is Kumon a good place and can I actually go?
Asked by healyallena - Sat Aug 16 22:38:59 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. yes you can still go. I'm an employee at kumon and there are a few kids that have their parents go to so they can help their kids with their work. I'm pretty sure that they will take anyone as long as you pay them btw. if your still hesitant about going, its nothing to be ashamed about. you want to get better at math so you should go. a year at kumon can really make a difference, trust me, ive seen it happen before.

A. Are you kidding? And when does the kid get to... o i don't know, play?! I AM the kid who skipped 8th grade, and 11th-12th and did Running start. I am in the program right now, I'm a senior but I don't go to high school. I don't know what prom is, a boyfriend is but I know 3 languages, Karate, dance, computers to the core, psychology, and I work like 7 days a week. Go ahead, do that. The kid will grow up and be successful is what you're thinking but in reality they get up one morning, look around, and shoot themselves because they've never gone out to the movies, kissed a close one in a relationship, or have done something stupid. And yes, my parents pushed me into having 2 jobs (count them, i'm 17!!!) and to start driving 3 years ago… [cont.]

A. I was on H in 5th grade. I think its probably 6th or 7th grade material. Simultaneous equations are likely 8th grade materials. I would suggest that you explain the process of doing the mathematics in detail to your kids because the worksheets are not very good at doing this. (They provide simple answers for complex cases and de-emphasize labeling terms for word problems. This leads to confusion and too much emphasis on speed.) Try to explain to your kids how to do the math instead. You can easily manufacture your own Kumons. They are terribly expensive.

A. Kumon s founder was a math teacher, and the original study plan he developed was in mathematics. While that program has evolved considerably, Kumon Math remains our most widely attended and recognized program. Kumon Math is a comprehensive program that develops the necessary skills to help a child progress from counting to calculus. Often children have trouble simplifying fractional expressions in algebra because they have not mastered basic calculations. The Kumon Method develops proficiency at every level, so Kumon students build the solid foundation they need to advance more successfully and confidently through their school s math curriculum. The ease with which Kumon students routinely learn to perform basic operations and solve… [cont.]

A. NO! It's a waste of money and they teach you 1+1=? kind of stuff for like a month then then the next month it's subtracting then multiplication then division and it's about 1000 dollars a month! big waste!

My first grader has trouble with Kumon Math. She knows complex math. Her teacher says she is too slow. Why?
Q. She can add dual digit numbers and subtract single digits. Math flashcards are a breeze. I am not certain if she doesn't like to pay attention long enough to finish a packet. Her teacher says it takes her 20 minutes to finish. I'm not sure if I should push her to do more or realize that this isn't a good style of learning for her.
Asked by meg12374 - Wed Sep 27 15:42:33 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'd arrange another meeting with the teacher to explain that your daughter isn't slow but just learns in a different manner and, in fact, may be bored because she is doing so well. I'd guage how the teacher takes this and if she insists that your daughter is slow then I'd take the child in hand myself at home because you don't want to risk her tiring of maths or falling behind. That way, she'll not be lagging when she starts with a new, hopefully more understanding teacher next year.

Why do parents force kids to do kumon?
Q. Im 12 years old, in grade 6, both in Level H, or grade 8 math and reading. Its annoying, and gets in my way when im doing my homework, and it piles up all the time, and i never get a vacation! Why do we have to do this?
Asked by bbxchan - Fri May 4 23:18:17 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I really think that parents want them to succeed at school and to build confidence in the classroom.I I think though that kids should not be filled with so many activities after school .It burns them out. Kids need time to be kids which is more beneficial at this stage of their lives.
