how much electricity would be needed to produce a thrust of 253,000 lbs?
Q. i am asking this question in relation to an airplane (in this case Boeing 747-400). We are trying to find a way for B 747-400 to run on electricity rather than jet fuel) Sorry I forgot to mention that electricity to run a motor, not an engine.

A. I am sorry to have to tell you that what you are proposing is not possible. Existing technology does not allow the storage of electricity in a light weight and efficient form that would power an airplane. It's been done in a couple of very small experimental airplanes, but not for a practical transportation machine. The basic conversion rate is about 1.5 HP per pound of thrust. That is a very theoretical number, but it's better than no number at all. So at 38,000 feet at Mach .85, you would need about 380,000 HP. That will require 285 Megawatts, or about the amount consumed by a city the size of Austin Texas or Canterbury UK. So you see there is a tremendous amount of power in jet fuel. The batteries required to run that airplane… [cont.]

I plan to mount a 34 lbs thrust electric trolling motor on my 15'6" long, 37" beam canoe?
Q. and I wonder if this is enough power? My friend has a 17'5" long, 38" beam canoe with a Minn Kota Endura 50. I have to say, this canoe moves fast, even set to 4 (out of 5) it is no problem covering what is known to be a mile, in about 15 minutes (4mph). I plan on using an Endura 34. Do you think I will be able to cruise anywhere near 4 mph? Even going against the wind or current, my friend can make 4 mph if he sets it to 5. Seems 4 mph is the maximum speed of the hull, maybe 4.5 mph. Thanks.

A. Can't think of any turbo-fan...but in turbo-jet there is the Solar Turbine..originally used as an APU source. There are also several aircraft APU's that are in that catagory. I have heard of a homebuilder who used a Allison C-18 (normally powering the 'A' model Jetaranger helicopter) in pure thrust mode. There is also the french TRS-114 originally used on the BD-5J. Also Williams made a small turbojet WR24-6 with 115lbs thrust Noel Penny 100 series as well...180 lbs thrust Hope this helps! With respect to DogZ ...yes.they do burn thru a heap of fuel. But it isn't always as it appears. For instance...a Allison C-18 will burn about 21-22 US gal/hr and output about 317 Shp. However unlike a recip of the same power, the turbine will… [cont.]

A. Assuming straight up! " j " g = 32 ft/s^2 -j Net force = thrust - weight of rocket Net force = F = 8.3 - 5 = 3.3 j pounds m = w/g = 5 /32 slug F = m * a a = F / m = 3.3 / (5/32) = 21.12 j ft/s^2 "vector" Note: The rocket's mass and weight will decrease as it's fuel is exhausted. In more formal terms: net force = m(dv/dt) = vr(dm/dt) - mg where vr(dm/dt) equals the upward thrust on the rocket

Q. I am not talking about ejaculation here people - I just get tired thrusting and being on top, especially if I'm expected to get my 180 lbs fully off my lady. torque/horsepower help must figure out thrust?
Q. First, if i have an engine with 6.5 horsepower at 3600 rpm, the torque is measured from the outside of the crankshaft of diameter 3/4", right? so if i put a sprocket on to drive a chain i have to divide my torque of 9.48 ft-lbs by the ratio between 3/4 and the diameter of the sprocket? does this affect horsepower AND torque or does the hp stay the same due to the increased linear speed? Also, if i am supplying a certain amount of torque and hp to the rear drive sprocket, how do i figure out how much "thrust" i am supplying to the ground, say if its 40 ft-lbs on the sprocket and the wheel is 2 times bigger, do i divide 40 ft-lbs by 2 and get 40 pounds force, or what? Ive been trying to figure this out for awhile so the more detailed the… [cont.]

A. Well, I'll start with the easiest part: "does the hp stay the same due to the increased linear speed?" Yes it does. "the torque is measured from the outside of the crankshaft of diameter 3/4", right?" No, not really, if your torque is 9,48ft-lbs, it is being measured (in effect) at a 1ft radius, not a 3/8" radius. At the 3/8" radius the force would 303.36lbs Therefor the answer to: "so if i put a sprocket on to drive a chain i have to divide my torque of 9.48 ft-lbs by the ratio between 3/4 and the diameter of the sprocket?" is No, but if you want to know the force tangent to the sprocket, you'd multiply the 9.48lbs at 1ft radius by 1/(radius of sprocket in feet), "say if its 40 ft-lbs on the sprocket and the wheel is 2 times bigger, [cont.]

2 lbs a week is a sensible goal, if you ask me. So I need some tips and opinions, please?
Q. Ok, I wanna try to lose 2 lbs a week, I think that' reasonable. I'm a 16 year old girl, I'm 5'2" and I want to be 110 lbs instead, which is a healthy weight for my size, considering that I have a very small frame. Now, I do alot of weight lifting and DDR, so I have quite a bit of muscle in my arms and legs, which might be part of why my weight is such a large number, but I still want to lose about 15 lbs. So, I'm going to eat 1200 calories daily because any less then you won't lose weight. Also, this is what I usually do for a work out: 60 jumping jacks 30 push-ups 30 - 45 crunches 60 seconds of butt-kicks 30 lunges 30 hip thrusts 60 seconds of punching 30 squats 30 bicycle crunches And then repeat all of those again. A. The motor doesn't care where it's mounted. If you can mount it so it reaches the water go ahead. Being electric it can run in either direction.

I don't know about how new designs on deep cycle battery work but old design if you didn't almost drain the battery of charge it would get what's called a memory and only recharge to that point you starting charging from

Q. what does it mean when it says the jet engine gets lets say 17 lb thrust at whatever rpm's. does that mean it can only lift 17 lbs? so if i wanted to lift something weighing 50 lbs into the air i would need 3 jet engines? thanks
Asked by James M - Sat May 17 10:20:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Theoretically yes. If you point an airplane straight up and it has more thrust than it weighs it will climb. Called thrust/weight ratio. A Harrier hovering is producing exactly the same thrust in lbs. as the aircraft weight. And no, lift is not 100% generated by the wings. If that were true, how does an airplane fly on knife edge? And folks, a saturn V rocket has many pounds of thrust and no wings. Hmmm. Were talking engine power here folks, not aerodynamics. He wants to know if thrust can lift things. You bet it can. No wings required.

Q. Rocket POWER question... HELP!!!?
Q. What is the maximum power of a rocket with 3 parallel J2-X engines? What is the total thrust of the engines configured in this way? I need this in order to find the cost for launch. total thrust: total wet mass: 1,244,000~1,300,000 lbs *air-launched Isp= 465
Asked by Nick K - Sat Apr 4 17:33:15 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. From the ref., vacuum thrust will be 294,000 pounds, and specific impulse will be 448 seconds. The sea-level thrust will be less, depending on the nozzle expansion ratio. A parallel trio will have 3 times the single-engine thrust. The idea of specifying the power of a rocket engine is difficult, since power = thrust * current velocity. So power is zero at the moment of liftoff (if the engine we're talking about is first-stage) and increases during acceleration. Low earth orbit velocity is about 7000 m/s, so a tiny 1-N thrust provides 7 kW of power!
