Lead poisoning from a 4b pencil?
Q. I have this Design 3800 4b pencil that I draw with, and I noticed that on the cover of the package, it says that it's a "Thin lead for sharp, long wearing points." But it doesn't say anything about being made from graphite. Does that mean it's actual lead? And if so, does that mean I can get lead poisoning from it?

A. The term "lead" is a holdover from the old days when we artists actually used lead to draw with. Pencils are a graphite mixed with variable amounts of clay. The amount of clay mixed in with the graphite depends on how hard the pencil is. The less clay you have in it then the softer the lead is. The harder the lead is then the more amount of clay you have in it. Although metallic lead used to be the preferred pencil it started to lose to crude wrapped graphite by the seventeenth century. We have been using wood encased graphite lead from the start of the nineteenth century. So ... not to worry about lead poisoning from your graphite dust, or otherwise.
