Personal and public liability insurance - Is it possible to get a combined policy?
Q. I'm about to set up a small sole trader business in the UK making furniture and I am going to be moving into a small industrial unit which I will be renting. I have been advised by the people who are renting out the unit that I need to get personal and public liability insurance. I have done a few searches on the internet but I can't see any companies that have a combined policy. In other words it seems I have to get two seperate insurance policies for personal and public insurance. Is this right? Or is it the case that public liability also includes personal liability.

A. OK, I filter to US Only questions (not english only) and this came up, so I'm guessing that maybe you're not going to get many UK answers. Here in the US, and most of the rest of the world, it's true - there are TWO different kinds of liability - personal, and business. "Public" is a misnomer - public can be either personal, or business. Or maybe it's just a UK way to say 'business'. But, you CANNOT combine the two. The rating basis and coverages are WILDLY divergent. Business liability does NOT include personal liability, but it DOES extend coverage, to some extent, over employees in the course of employment. With exclusions, of course.

What is my tax liability on the sale of property from an inheritance?
Q. My wife and I live in Texas. My wife's father died in April 2006. His estate was left to my wife and two siblings. The proceeds are divided evenly. He owned some land in Oregon that was sold last month. The beneficiaries were listed as the sellers of the property. It was not listed as my father-in-law's property, nor was it listed as belonging to his estate. Her share of the sale was just over $10,500. What is our federal tax liability on the sale of the house? What is our tax liability with Oregon, if any?
Asked by P Ackerman - Sat Sep 1 15:12:05 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The property was transferred to your wife and her two siblings at the date the estate was settled. Their basis in the property was the fair value of the property at the date of your father-in-law's death. Only the amount of increase in value between their basis and the selling price is taxable for federal income tax purposes. As an example, suppose your father-in-law bought a piece of land for $10,000. On the date of his death, it was worth $25,000. Your wife and her two siblings are now the owners of that land and their basis in the land is $25,000. Suppose they sell it for $31,500. Their gain on the sale would be $6,500 ($31,500 - $25,000). The taxable amount to your wife would be $2,167 and she would have to pay long-term… [cont.]

What is my liability if my house is repossessed by the mortgage servicer?
Q. Due to unforeseen financial circumstances, I'm now unable to afford the mortgage payments on my house. If I voluntarily surrender my house to the mortgage company what is my liability?
Asked by Rod H - Wed Jan 30 10:56:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unfortunately you are still legally liable for the entire mortgage note that you signed. Practically speaking, though, in American convention, your liability will most likely be reduced by the amount the house ultimately sells for, less any costs to the bank to sell the home. Which leaves you owing the difference between the market value and what you currently owe. And a bad credit report :( have you considered contacting the mortgage company and asking for a changed payment schedule? The mortgage holder would rather have the money than the home, and with our recession, mortgage companies are increasingly willing to work with their borrowers. They often will accept lower payments for a short term while you get back on your feet. … [cont.]

A. There are many companies that specialize in events like yours. They start from $500 and go up depending on how much in revenue you plan on having, parking, security, attendance, alcohol and various other things. If you are located in the state of CA, give me a call. I can help you. If not, call you local commercial insurance agent. They should be able to take care of this.

How do I book the liability for a fine without the whole thing hitting my expenses in one month?
Q. I owe the state a $3000 fine. I want to show the liability on my books but I don't want to expense $3000 all in one month. I have three years to pay it off and have made payment arrangements. I'd like to see $100 per month on my P&L and the remainder on my balance sheet. Is this possible?
Asked by awwcrapdoihafta? - Fri Oct 16 21:05:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Uhhh... What you do is record the payments as you make them as an expense, say you pay $100 this month, so you record a $100 expense, keep doing that and by the time you have it all paid off you also show the expense.

A. Any immigrant must have a sponsor who is willing and able to support the immigrant and guarantee a $30,000 bond. The affidavit of support legally constitutes a bond in the amount of $30,000, and your father is liable for that sum. There is no alternative to proof of support and this affidavit. Has your husband's bar been served? E.g. if he was barred for 10 years (he was here illegally for a year or more), has it been 10 years since he was deported and he arrived back in his own country? If not, plus the fact that you cannot support your husband and your father is not a blood relative of this man, he's not returning. Don't waste all that money on application fees, legal fees, etc. He could, however, sponsor your immigration to… [cont.]

A. Public or General Liability insurance can be tricky if you have never purchased or researched it before. Speak to a local independent insurance agent and they can get your friend a quote. You may be able to get by with a policy called a Special Event Policy which may be cheaper than for him to get a General Liability policy which typically runs for a year at a time. Start with whoever writes your Homeowners/Auto insurance and they can either council you on this or recommend someone who can. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming big day!

If you hit an uninsured motorist and have liability insurance what happens 10 Points Best Answer?
Q. If you hit an uninsured motorist and have liability insurance does your insurance company have to pay the uninsured motorist? Also, If you don't have insurance and get in a non-fault car accident, do you have to pay the other vehicle because you don't have insurance?
Asked by StokelyL - Wed Oct 7 03:20:51 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As far as I know if you only have liability and are at fault it doesn't matter if they have insurance your company pays and your SOL. If you have liability and the uninsured motorist hits you your still SOL. You can sue them but chances are if they don't have insurance they also don't have any money. If any accident is non-fault I don't think either of you have to pay for the other person but you can try to make them in civil court and vise-versa.

What is the liability portion of a judgment?
Q. My husband has a judgment on his credit report from 2004 from an unpaid debt to an apartment complex. At the time he had a roommate. He moved out and thought that he was no longer on the lease but the apartment complex still held him liable for the damages to the apartment caused by the roommate. He said there were alot of damages. The judgment says something about a liability of $550. If paid, what does that satisfy? The last communication from the Collection agency has the other guy listed as well. The collection agency is still on his credit report with the initial amount. What is going on? I'm lost and we are inexperienced in this type of situation.
Asked by ShayVee - Wed May 13 04:49:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your hubby and his roommate were held jointly and severally liable for the damages. There most likely was a court judgement against both your hubby and his roommate. What that means is either your hubby is responsible for the full $550, his roommate is responsible for the full $550 or they both share responsibility for the full $550. If paid, the debt is satisfied but the credit ding stays on both of their credit reports. The collection agency wants its money and they don't care who pays it.

What is the liability of an airline to provide lodging and food when they cancell a flight?
Q. If there is liability for hotel/ food costs how does one determine if the airline is liable in a specific instance? If the airline declares it to be a weather related cancellation/delay, how can the passenger verify it was weather. For example does the FAA have a database by flight number for weather delays?
Asked by followingsea2001 - Thu Jul 5 15:41:19 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most airlines have 2 types of policies: controllable and uncontrollable. The first would be, for example, if there is a delay/cancellation due to industrial action or engine problem, then they will pay for various costs such as a couple of phone calls, accomodation, food and transfers. If it is a weather disrupt (uncontrollable) then the airline is NOT liable as it is no fault of theirs therefore they will not compensate. That's why travellers should get travel insurance as most policies will cover uncontrollable disrupts. I guess you can check whether flights are cancelled due to weather by calling the airline on your day of departure just to make sure flights are going on that day.

What is my liability to let someone take over my car payment?
Q. I have a car loan, but can't afford the payment now. Selling it is not enough to pay off principle. A company specializes in finding buyers to take over car payments. I am still on the title, but the buyer will purchase full insurance, and indemnify me from liability. But since I am still the registered owner, if an injury judgment is so large that his coverage and assets are not enough to satisfy, will I be exposed? I understand injury lawyers shoot first and ask questions later. Even if not legally liable, I can still get dragged through defending myself, which can be emotionally draining and expensive.

Q. It say's I have $50,000 personal liability coverage for my renters insurance. What does that mean?
Asked by Don - Mon Jan 21 13:26:21 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This would be for anything you are found legally liable for. Such as something you did or failed to do that caused injury. This would be for non-motor vehicle related incidents (that is what auto insurance liability is for). As part of your lease, if you are responsible for clearing ice & snow & didn't & the UPS person slipped & fell, you could be held liable. If you are walking down the street & open your umbrella & poke someone's eye out, you could be held liable & be sued. I didn't even know there was any company that wrote $50,000. The lowest I have seen in YEARS is $100,000. On most policies you can get $500,000 liability for less than $30 per year, get a quote to see what it is. $50,000 won't get you very far. What are the liability issues with insurrance?
Q. I am a case worker for a mental health facility and my boss wants me to use my personal car to pick up clients. The clients are kids and I was wondering what kind of liability issue I would be putting myself in?
Asked by sportyrigid - Thu Jun 5 02:07:11 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need to call your company BEFORE you agree to this. Some companies will have you change your useage to business use (at a higher rate then drive to work), some will make you get a commercial auto policy. Some will just cancel you (if they don't offer a commercial auto policy - some companies don't write commercial insurance). You are opening yourself up for huge lawsuits, especially if these client are children. Remember, the parents have put their trust in you to take care of their kids & if you have an accident, oh boy, watch out. You have a much higher duty of care than say a mom who is taking her kid & his friend to soccer practice. Most insurance companies in my area are very wary of this situation.

Asked by silent h - Mon Jul 7 19:27:52 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Workmens Comp will cost you apx 1% of each worker's salary monthly. Not too expensive but it eats up your profit. Business insurance will be tied into the type of operation you run. Heavy trucks and lifting motors? $250 per worker per month? Sitting in an office? $50 per worker per month. You didn't mention health insurance but you can guess that will be at least $250 per month per person without covering their family. I hope that you are really going to open a business. i did. I wish i'd done it sooner. It's been fun.
