Help with chemical formula?
Q. I want to write the chemical formula of Beryllium Chloride. I know the answer is BeCl2, but what I don't understand is how do you know how many chlorine atoms to put in the formula? Lithium Bromide is LiBr, so why is only 1 atom from lithium and 1 atom from bromide needed, whereas in Beryllium Chloride, we need 2 chloride atoms? ok then again what do you mean by a stable atom?

A. ok the rule of the periodic table and making binary compounds is switching the valences of your elements on the periodic table Be is in the second column witch means the outer shell has a valency of 2(this means that in order for Be to become stable it needs 2 more electrons. while Cl is in row 17 and need 1 e;electrons to be stable. when your making binary compounds you switch the valency's with each other so Be+2 + Cl-1 = Be1Cl2 and if theres a 1 you automatically dont need to show it. another example magnesium sulfide Mg+2 + S-3 = Mg3S2 LI and Br both have a valency of 1 so when they cross its Li1Br1

A. Most are correct Sodium fluoride is NaF Sodium oxide is Na2O Beryllium Bromide is BeBr2 Mercury(I) sulfide is Hg2S I'm not sure why you have the pluses and minuses in the formulae. All these are neutral compounds.

Chemistry help - Ionic compound formula?
Q. Barium ion and iodide ion - the answer is BaI2; the book shows the solution and why, but I don't understand it still. I got my answer correct for lithium ion and bromide ion, which is just LiBr. Anyhow, how the heck is barium ion is +2 and iodide is -1, is it because Barium is on 2A? @_@ Another problem of min is Aluminum ion and Sulfied ion. It says that Al charge is +3, when I look at the periodic table, Al is on 3A; sulfur is on 6A @_@ Does it mean that Al lost 3 electrons and sulfide ion gained 2? Woah! My teacher and the book never explained that to me. Does this only work for 1A-8A not 1B-8B? -_-' I'm really slow with chemistry.

A. To figure this out look at the periodic table group 1 elements have a +1 charge, gr.2 like Ba have a +2. On the other end of the table you figure out the charge by taking 8 and subtracting the group number from it. Iodine I is in group 7 so 8-7 = 1 so the charge for I is -1. S would be 8-6 =2 so the charge on S is -2
