A logbook was originally a book for recording readings from the log, and is used to determine the distance a ship traveled within a certain amount of time. The readings of the log have been recorded in equal times to give the distance traveled with respect to a given start position.

Today's ship's log has grown to contain other types of information, and is a record of data relating to a ship or submarine, such as weather conditions, crew complement or what ports were docked at and when. It is essential to traditional navigation, and must be filled in at least daily.

Most Admiralties specify that logs are kept to provide a record of events, and to help crews navigate should radio, radar or the GPS fail. Examination of a log is often used to try to explain some sort of disaster, in much the same way as a "black box" is used on airplanes (see Mary Celeste).

The term logbook has spread to a wide variety of other endeavors, and logbooks are widely used for e.g. complex machines like nuclear plants or particle accelerators where one is more and more using a computer based electronic logbook. In military terms, a logbook is a series of official and legally binding documents. Each document (usually arranged by date) is marked with the time of an event or action of significance.

Naval vessels often keep a "rough log," a preliminary draft of the ship's course, speed, location, and other data, which is then transcribed as the "smooth log," the final version of the ship's record. Changes may be made to the rough log but the smooth log is considered permanent.

A. A pilot's logbook contains two things: a record of what he has been doing/has done, and a record of privileges and accomplishments granted or certified by CFIs, DPEs, and Inspectors. been doing our imaginary pilot makes a flight from Dallas Love Field (DAL) to Houston's Hobby Airport(HUB---it may be HOU, but bear with me). This flight commences in the early AM so that the first 30 minutes is in darkness, takes 1.5 hours, and during the flight the pilot encountered instrument conditions (IMC) for the last 20 mnutes of flight, and he has to conduct an instrument approach to HUB, There would be a single line in his logbook the would show a flight from DAL-HUB, 1.5 total flight hours, .5 hours of night, .3 hours of instrument, and would… [cont.]

Who owns the car? The person who's cash pays for it or the person who is down on the logbook?
Q. My ex-partner bought a car using a loan she got from from the bank specifically for that purpose. But her new partner took her cash down and got his name put on the logbook. Now there on the verge of breaking up and he is saying he is keeping the car but it belongs to her. How does she go about keeping her car and stop him from stealing it?

A. Look at the registration document for any vehicle and in section 5 it clearly says: "The Registered Keeper is not necessarily the legal owner". Proving who is the legal owner can be a minefield, however, as it's usually regarded as the person who has the sales receipt. The only way she can prove she owns the car is in a court of law (unless her partner changes his mind). She needs to speak to a solicitor or C.A.B. for the best advice.
