Spanish pronounciation for ll and y? Q. Words like llora, yo, lluvia, llena and others... do they start with an english "j" sound? It does not say this in phrasebooks and stuff like that but I hear it all the time. My neighbor's last name is Magallanes, but he says "Mah-gah-JAH-ness" I am trying to get a feel for this language. Also, abajo? Do u try to say the j (h) sound far back in the thoat (kind of gutteral) Thanks! Asked by Prickly P - Wed Nov 29 15:08:57 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. In modern Spanish, in almost all the Spanish speaking countries, we pronounce "ll" and "y" the same but in old Spanish it was different, the pronunciation of Magallanes was something like Mah-gahl-jah-ness (note the "l"), you can find this in some rural places. Also, in different countries we pronounce that harder or softer, for example Argentinians say "ll" and "y" like "sh", but in others countries is like "j". We pronounce "J" not guttural most in the Caribbean countries, but in others countries (like Mexico, Chile, etc), we say that very guttural. I hope it helps. Q. I'm coming from Guadalupe, Makati City Asked by unsure - Thu May 8 20:26:38 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think Magallanes is another place beside Bgy San Antonio. The answerer above discussed the way to San Antonio. If going to Magallanes, here's the route: From Guadalupe EDSA, take a bus bound to south such as Pasay or Baclaran. Get off the bus just after passing the Magallanes Interchange. Cross the EDSA Hiway and look for tricycle to bring you to Magallanes or either walk along the street parallel to South Super Hiway. When you reached the Magallanes Village gate, ask the guard for direction. Answered by Tooth Fairy - Thu May 8 21:06:15 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "magallanes" |
