In recreational mathematics, a magic square of order n is an arrangement of n² numbers, usually distinct integers, in a square, such that the n numbers in all rows, all columns, and both diagonals sum to the same constant. A normal magic square contains the integers from 1 to n². The term "magic square" is also sometimes used to refer to any of various types of word square.

Normal magic squares exist for all orders n ≥ 1 except n = 2, although the case n = 1 is trivial—it consists of a single cell containing the number 1. The smallest nontrivial case, shown below, is of order 3.

The constant sum in every row, column and diagonal is called the magic constant or magic sum, M. The magic constant of a normal magic square depends only on n and has the value

For normal magic squares of order n = 3, 4, 5, …, the magic constants are:

15, 34, 65, 111, 175, 260, … (sequence A006003 in OEIS).
At Macworld Expo 2009, Apple Inc. cofounder Steve Wozniak created a magic square after asking his audience to suggest a random number for the magic constant.

I need help with a magic square?
Q. the instructions say to complete the square with integers from 5-16 to make it magic. on each horizontal, each vertical, and each of the two diagonals the sum of hte numbers is to be 34. there is also a hint( the two unfilled corner squares must also add up to 29) so the square is like 4*4 and in the first row of the first colum is a 1 and the 3 remaning coulums in the first row are empty the second row has a 2 in the 3rd colum and the rest are blank the third row has a 3 in the second colum and the rest are blank the fourth row has a 4 in the fourth colum and the rest are blank i have tried to solve this but i cant i got really close but it was messed up in the end so i had to start over can sum1 plz help me? thanks!

A. No. Consider the set {0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1}. Then one column and one row sum to 1. The others sum to 0. If you don't like that idea because it uses zeros, simply replace the set with { 1, 7, 14, 21, ..., 54 }. The same problem happens if you reduce the magic square modulo 7. One row and one column sum to something that has remainder 1 when divided by 7. The others sum to things divisible by 7.
