When the Chinese from China migrate to Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak did they create a new version of?
Q. Chinese language that doesn't exist in China and Taiwan
Asked by Jedi Sapiens - Sun Oct 14 13:54:19 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some Cantonese words used by Malaysian Chinese do not exist in Hong Kong. Example: if you say 'lok sui' (raining) in HK, they know you are Malaysian. They say 'lok yu' instead. More: do not say 'tah pau' when you want to takeaway food in HK. You should say 'lor jau', because if somebody 'tah pau' you it means that they murdered you. Here 'tah pau' means takeaway. The phrase 'kok kuih' referring to kuih muih exists in Cantonese here, but say that to a HK hawker he will just give you a blank stare. The Hokkien dialect here in M''sia differs slightly from Taiwanese Hokkien, and the one spoken in China's Fujien province.

A. The Japanese invaded Malaya on Dec 8, 1941. It took until Jan 31,1942 to conquer the Malayan Peninsula, but the British retreated to Singapore and didn't surrender until Feb. 15, 1942.
