What is a camera with a manual lens openings and manual shutter speed controls?
Q. Ok, so for school, i'm taking a photography class, and it said that i need a camera with a manual lens openings and manual shutter speed controls. what exactly are those? I have a digital camera. Is this fine for the class? Also, it said that "no point shoot or automatic only cameras would be allowed" What is that? thnks.

A. In class what they really want you to learn in photography... not just how to point an automatic camera and press the button. Manual control cameras give you an entire new outlook on photography, operating the equipment and actually doing the work yourself. A digital SLR will do that but I'm wondering if your instructor would accept that. Because, if I was teaching the class, I would know that you could cheat by using the auto controls and just saying that you did everything manually. A really good learning tool would be an older 35mm SLR film camera. I've owned a few and they weren't automatic - you had to do everything including learning how to use a light meter and then exposing your film based on that reading - along with focus,… [cont.]

Can i swap out a manual headlights control in a 1997 ford taurus gl to an autolamp control?
Q. I have a 1997 ford taurus gl that has the manual headlight control (when you have to turn the lights on manually) and i noticed some models have autolamp. Is there a possibility you can swap out a manual headlight control to an autolamp one? If you can does it require extra wiring? Thanks for your answers.

A. It would require a dash harness, as there is a light sensor involved in the circuit as well. But there are Ford kits, as well as aftermarket kits, to do this much more easily and cheaply. The Ford kit takes about 20 minutes to install, and works well.

What is the advantage of manual transmission vs automatic?
Q. It seems like performance cars are offered with manual transmissions. I drive a 2007 Grand Prix with automatic, and it seems really nice to be able to keep both hands on the wheel when I'm pushing it. What are the primary advantages to manual that make it so appealing?
Asked by Robin G - Thu Nov 6 15:35:02 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Being able to change gears on command. Automatics often "search" for the correct gear when you put the pedal to the floor. It doesnt know what you want to do so it takes a while to figure it out. Manual, you can put it where ever you'd like immediately. Also automatic shifting is slower than a well trained manual shift. This means from an acceleration perspective, the manual should be able to accelerate faster (assuming you know what you're doing). Gear ratios are sometimes different as well and some manuals include an additional gear (Five-speed automatic or Six-Speed manual). This just gives you one more gear to fool around with for either more power or better fuel economy. Depends on how the manufacturer saw the advantage. Enjoy!

Is a manual treadmill is better than an electrical one for burn fat fast and strengthen my lower body?
Q. A friend of me suggested that a manual treadmill is better than an electrical one especially for a person who is willing to get a stronger lower body (butts, legs, thighs ... ). But I am not sure about this because in the market the prices for an electrical one is higher than a manual one. And I am also wondering whether just running will give more better results than using either one of them.

A. the prices are higher for electrical because even people who excersice are lazy.. they would rather be on the electric a bit longer then go on the manual for shorter just have a harder work out.. electrical are more expensive also because theres more to it more parts more buttons more everything a lot more money to build an electrical then manual

What are the benefits of a manual car versus an automatic?
Q. I and going to start researching a new car. I was wondering what the benefits (either way) of manual and automatic. Is it even wise to get a manual in the Silicon Valley where there is a lot of stop and go traffic? I forgot: Are there gas mileage benefits to either?
Asked by mookie - Tue Dec 13 19:40:24 2005 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Get automatic for Silicon Valley. Manual is much more work, esp. in stop-and-go driving. I suspect automatic also gives better gas mileage. Only real advantage of manual is safer driving over snow or ice (if you know what engine braking is). The un-real advantages inlcude boost to manly ego and less requests to borrow the car.

A. Ok I'll try to answer your question in few steps as simply as possible: 1. Come to a complete stop 2. Shift into neutral 3. Pull the handbrake up 4. Shift into a first gear 5. With the handbrake on try starting normally as you would've if the ground was leveled 6. You will feel (notice) that the car is trying to move, but handbrake is not letting the car go forward (hood will maybe go up, depends on what car you drive) 7. Release the handbrake and the car will start moving with not rolling back (you are not going to hit the car even if the car is 5 inches behind you and you're driving in San Francisco:) ) hope this helps P.S. with the practice and experience you will be able to manage to start on a hill without using the e-brake, just a… [cont.]

How to improve manual focus skills in photography?
Q. I have been using Autofocus for a long time. I am wondering how to improve my manual focus? Especially because im using a Canon 70-200mm f/4 with a 2X II extender, where there is not AF. In the viewfinder i think the focus is good, but when i view them on the PC the quality is bad. What is the solution?
Asked by humaxing - Fri Jun 26 11:09:13 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, I used to shoot MF all the time (I had a D40x but only one of the three lenses I own is AF-S) so I have a few tips-shoot a lot more than you otherwise would. Make sure your diopter is dialed in correctly, and always press your eye right up against the viewfinder, and really strain to look for detail. It is possible to get excellent manual focus shots with a DX (or whatever Canon calls it) sensor if you really strain. In fact, I used to shoot sports with a 70-300 f/4-5.6, and an old Vivitar "Auto Thyristor" flash. The important thing is purely to use continuous and vary your shots slightly. Oh, and a good way to get used to seeing exactly what in focus looks like in your viewfinder is to just shoot at something a set distance away… [cont.]

A. Every body had good advices on film camers, I suggest strongly to go digital. It will be much cheaper in the long term, believe me. You can choose whatever digital camera you want, a dSLR would be the best, but since the cheapest dSLR starts from $550, you can go with a reular point and shoot digital. I have used canon A520 (sold new on internet for around $150) which provides lots of manual settings. next you need post processing (Remember, when you clicked the shutter you're only half way through! the rest half is done on your computer). for a photo-processingn software I recommend GIMP which is as powerful as photoshop, but is totally free. You also need a noise reduction software. GIMP (and photoshop) have built-in filters, but "N [cont.]

A. The employee manual covers all aspects of your employment, from policies, procedures, breaks, vacations, etc. The training manual is specific for the actual work you'll be doing...such as the training manual for a cashier.

Is Chiltons auto repair manual a reliable guide?
Q. I bought a 1996 toyota camry and i like tinkering around maintaining the car myself. I already changed the spark polugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. I may need new brakes soon that I want to do myself. I also need a maintenance guide so I know exactly when my car needs oil changes, fluids checks, belts changed, hoses, etc. I want to do it myself. So is the manual reliable? Or haynes?
Asked by mantastic86 - Mon Aug 20 23:35:28 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree with daihatsu man... if you really want to know what you're doing, get both. You can find them on e-Bay, Amazon.com, etc. used, so it's worth it. It may depend on model, but I've found that Chiltons sometimes covers multiple ones, so the instructions may not be specific to the one you have. Also, Haynes sometimes says "Consult an authorized repair facility" or words to that effect. (paraphrasing there) If you are mechanically inclined, both will probably benefit you. I have BOTH for my 84 Chevy pickup, and 94 Volvo sedan. Hope this helps you... mechanics earn their money, but it's big bucks! So have a beer with a friend and figure it out on your own!

What's the difference between a Haynes owners workshop manual & a service repair manual?
Q. I have 2 1984 Suzuki gs 125 bikes that need taking apart and (hopefully) making good one machine from them. I do not know the difference between a Haynes owners workshop manual and a service repair manual, if any, but would need a comprehensive detailed book because to date my knowkedge is limited to basic maintainance.

A. Buy a Haynes if you're planning to do that kind of work on a bike. Haynes is complete tear-down, repair or replace pretty much anything and everything bumper to bumper. A service manual will tell you the proper maintenance schedule, among other things, but is basically a owners manual.

How much should I charge for creating a training manual for a company?

The owner of the company cannot even train these people himself because he doesn't know the computer/accounting system. I am the only person in the world that can train his new employee and frankly I am getting tired of being in this position, so I am going to propose to my old boss that I will develop a very detailed training manual that will go over absolutely every aspect of the job step by step, so that from now on he can just go through the training manual with the new employee instead of begging me to train them, again. A. I don't see any reason to get greedy, no sense in aggravating a potential future reference. Presumably, you don't have any research to do on the computer/ accounting system. You merely write the manual from personal knowledge. I would recommend that you negotiate with the former boss for a "project rate" of between $ 75 - $ 100 /hr. With, an estimated 50% "up-front" and the balance due upon completion of the project, via invoice at the time of delivery, based on the number of hours actually expended. If you desire, you can negotiate a proviso that the manual is your property and that s/he is only "licensing"it for internal "proprietary" use and that any changes will be done by you. Get everything in writing. (Write the agreement… [cont.]

Is a Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual printed in 1977 a good one to use for learning to fly? ?
Q. I'm currently taking flying lessons to become a private pilot and I was wondering if I purchased the right book. It's a Jeppesen Sanderson Private Pilot Manual but it was published in 1977. Does that make a difference or is it good enough? I just started taking lessons and that was a good price. or is one printed in 1994 better?
Asked by 5 - Tue Sep 9 18:01:01 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'd go with the one from 1994. The 77 one probably isn't up to date. Even better, I'd go with one that's only a few years old. Ask your flight instructor if he or any friends has old (but new) Jeppesen Pilot manuals they no longer use. You might even be able to find a few good cheap one's from E-bay. Good luck on getting your PPL!

A. You need a powerglide transmission, aluminum housing,a automatic flywheel, and bolts, you need a automatic radiator or transmission cooler and lines, and shift linkage, also a neutral safety switch. you will have to have a drive shaft if you have a hoschkis driveline i don't remember if the 54's has a enclosed driveline or not..if not it should all work fine.

Need a how-to manual to replace the starter on a Generac/Guardian generator?
Q. I have a Generac stand-by generator that is about 5 years old and needs the starter replaced. I bought a new starter but I've never done anything like this before. I have exploded view diagrams in my owner's manual and a father-in-law who was a journeyman electrician, but due to his health issues, I would rather do this without his help, if possible. I've done some mechanical diy stuff, including replacing brakes on my car, but that was with a Haynes manual. Is there anything out there like a Haynes manual for generators?

Is it possible to convert a Ford Expedition to manual shift?
Q. I've noticed that the Ford F-150 resembles the Expedition and wondered if anyone has tried taking a manual shift conversion to this vehicle. They did manufacture the F-150 as manual shift at one time.
Asked by BlakJak - Sun Mar 4 23:55:16 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes it is possible, provided it is a 4.6L Expedition (the 5.4L on an F-150 was never offered with a manual transmission). It WILL be costly though. You would require the transmission, transfer case, clutch and brake pedal assemblies, the shifter itself, the hydraulic system for the clutch, the PCM, as well as some additional wiring, at the very least. My question would be WHY you would want to convert this to a manual transmission? The search for all the parts needed will NOT be easy, since there weren't too many V8 F-150s sold with a manual transmission. Hope this helps.
