From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Marketing is an integrated communications-based process through which individuals and communities discover that existing and newly-identified needs and wants may be satisfied by the products and services of others. Marketing is defined by the American Marketing Association as the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. The term developed from the original meaning which referred literally to going to market, as in shopping, or going to a market to buy or sell goods or services. The Chartered Institute of Marketing, which is the world's largest marketing body, defines marketing as "The management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably." Marketing practice tended to be seen as a creative industry in the past, which included advertising, distribution and selling. However, because marketing makes extensive use of social sciences, psychology, sociology, mathematics, economics, anthropology and neuroscience, the profession is now widely recognised a science, allowing numerous universities to offer Master-of-Science (MSc) programmes. The overall process starts with marketing research and goes through market segmentation, business planning and execution, ending with pre and post-sales promotional activities. It is also related to many of the creative arts. The marketing literature is also infamous for re-inventing itself and its vocabulary according to the times and the culture. Seen from a systems point of view, sales process engineering views marketing as a set of processes that are interconnected and interdependent with other functions, whose methods can be improved using a variety of relatively new approaches. GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between a marketing campaign and a promotion? Q. My belief is that promotion is more broad than a marketing campaign (think the four p's). A marketing campaign is found within promotion. I was also assuming a campaign is a strategy of speaking to a particular segment within your target. Is this the case? What if, for example, you have marketing activities you are doing specifically for Christmas. Could this be the Christmas promotion within a wider campaign? Asked by Lala - Thu Dec 13 14:19:52 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Marketing campaign involves advertising, hiring a staff of salesmen and women to go out and solicit business, and finding retailers who will carry your product on their shelves. Promotion is temporarily reducing the cost of your retail product (discount sale) to steal your competitors' customers, by trying to convince consumers to switch services or name brands. People are creatures of habit; they'll routinely buy the same brand of products or services, until a better value comes along to entice them to switch. Answered by Corporate America !! - Thu Dec 13 14:33:51 2007 How are they getting away with marketing Transformers 2 to little kids? Q. The new Transformers movie is rated PG13 last time I checked, and yet Nickelodeon has been marketing it during shows like Dora the Explorer and Spongebob. My son got a Transformers toy in his Burger King Kids meal as well. How are they able to market this movie to such a broad range of children when arguably the kids who are viewing the ads really can't see the movie anyway? Does this bother anyone else? Asked by Magic 8 Ball Bottom Contributor - Wed Jun 24 18:34:10 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Just because it's PG13 means nothing. It's just a guide line for parents. I saw nothing wrong with the movies. My 9 year old loved it. The kids can see the movies. I believe a parent has to be with them. At that age a parent should be with them anyways. If you have a problem with the movie don't let your kid see it. It's your choice. Answered by danadeville - Wed Jun 24 21:22:44 2009 What does a marketing manager do, and how do you become one?
Q. I'm planning on getting my undergraduate degree in Psychology. Could I still become a marketing manager? Asked by starbucksluvrxoxo - Sun Jan 20 10:31:02 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's possible. The job varies from place to place, but basically you manage the placement of items for high turn over. In retail these are typically known as District Managers and they are generally hated by store managers who know their own areas and put things in places to make $$$ while the District MAnager want the poor selling items that don't make money up front so they can shovel them out and then ruins store profits in favor of item placement.
