Why is the mathematical model of communication called mathematical?
Q. The Shannon-Weaver Mathematical Model is called mathematical, why is it?
Asked by gelli_craze - Wed Sep 19 06:26:08 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Shannon-Weaver Model: This mathematical model of communication called the Shannon-Weaver model which is based on a source that sends the message and a receiver that encodes that message. The amount of information being transmitted was based on a number of factors including noise, frequency of transmission, and the strength of the signals. The received message can be affected by noise, the medium being used, or clarity.

How to optimize state of the world using mathematical model?
Q. How to optimize the state of the world using mathematical model? Can this be done? What are the variable that should be considered? What variable should be maximized? What variable should be minimized? Can this model help to show the right path to take? Thank you for taking your time to answer this question... Thank you for the answer... What if we introduce limitation to the model to make it a closed model? Or what if we accept the unstable state as one of the solution. Can we model it then?
Asked by MaX - Mon Jun 23 12:56:42 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would say no, that the state of the world cannot actually be optimized by a mathematical model. That isn't to say that mathematics isn't powerful enough to do it, but rather, even if we had all the variables and variable types correctly placed, there is not likely to be a optimal solution in any finite open ball around zero. Aside from that, if there is an optimal solution somewhere, then it's almost surely unstable, so can we really call it an optimal solution, since it can't accept even small changes in state. To summarize, since I feel I may have rambled a bit there: (1) Mathematics is powerful enough to do so (2) Humans aren't able to use the mathematics required (3) An "optimal solution" doesn't likely exist.

There is any mathematical model that has show to be superior to do forecasting in a time series application???
Q. There is any mathematical model that has show to be better to do forecasting in the area of economic, financial, management, operations or marketing??? I was trying to do a forecast of a selling variable, and a try a lot of models. But the one that has better performanced was to cut the variable to eliminated the stationarity and then to do a moving average in every segment. A wasn t exciting with this results because was soo simple. Then a compared this results with a model of other person and a lose, but the different was soo little that i'm not sure if that different was statistical significance.

A. One important implementation of Bayesian forecasting is the Multi-State Kalman Filter (MSKF) method. It is particularly suited for short and irregular time series data. In certain applications, time series data are available on numerous parallel observational units which, while not having cause-and-effect relationships between them, are subject to the same external forces (e.g., business cycles). Treating them separately may lose useful information for forecasting. For such situations, involving seemingly unrelated time series, this article develops a Bayesian forecasting method called C-MSKF that combines the MSKF method with the Conditionally Independent Hierarchical method

Q. Given the following data, find the BEST mathematical model that fits the data: x: -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 y: 5 2 1 2 5 10 17 26 Write the model and give the value of R2.
Asked by Ramy3m2s - Sun Aug 31 13:02:27 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is an example of a symmetry group. Specifically: rotational ( inferred ). This symmetry group exhibits the following rotational properties at R2: ( x,y ) x: ( a ) Any value added will retain its identity as an integer. x: ( b ) The value 1 must be added x: ( c ) Integer values, when taken at absolute value and subtracted, has magnitude 0 ( identity ) thus, id=a->b->c->a r1=b->c->a->b r2=c->b->a->c y: ( a ) The sequence ( 5,2,1 ) is reversed at it axis ( 1 ) and repeated in concatenation with its sum. thus, id=a r1=a r2=a As it turns out, the group is not Abelian. Symmetry groups are often fractal. Very useful in Turing methods. I've noticed.

A. The most used example is a Mass Spring System. F = ma is Newton's law, but it can be written as dv/dt, where v is the speed, and v can be written as dx/dt, where x is the position. Do the equation: F = ma = m*(d2x/dt2) And the total force on the system is the force of the spring, which is -kx. -kx = m(d2x/dt2) d2x/dt2 + (k/m) x = 0 Also, try borrowing "Zill & Cullen" (Authors) from the library. There are good models set up in thereom, with pictures as well. Good Luck!

how to turn a philosophical or scientific idea into a mathematical model?
Q. how to turn our extraordinary ideas into a mathematical explanation.could you give me some tips.Because i wanted to become a great mathematician like Einstein or Isaac newton or like Srinivasa Ramanujam.by the way how do mathematicians like Einstein learn math
Asked by Frankenstein - Tue Jun 26 08:39:44 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think Ramanujam was a natural prodigy. Many of his ideas, as I understand it, were not applied to physics until long after his premature death. Part of this was due to the very different style and methods of western mathematics. Unlike Ramanujan, Einstein was not a great mathematician but he had great physical intuition. He was able to ask the right questions and then learned the appropriate mathematics to express them. He didn't allow the preconceived notions of others to stifle his curiosity though he did let his own preconceived notions get the better of him at times.

How do I create a mathematical model?
Q. f(0) = 0 f(60) = 3.4 f(100) = 8.1 f(126) = 11.75 how can I create an equation f(x) that satisfies all of the above answers?
Asked by Alex D - Sat Nov 8 11:46:18 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A polynomial of degree 3 will do ! Take f(x) = ax + bx + cx + d and fill in the conditions : f(0) = d = 0 => d = 0 f(60) = 60 a + 60 b + 60 c = 3.4 f(100) = 100 a + 100 b + 100 c = 8.1 f(126) = 126 a + 126 b + 126 c = 11.75 so we have a system of three linear equations in three unknowns Solving this system yields : a=-0.000207616 b=0.00094051967 c=0.00770967921

A. Erwin Schroedinger developed the Schroedinger equation which is the equation that describes all of quantum physics and describes the behavior of the atom. You can read a little bit about it here: Additionally, if you are new to quantum mechanics, there is an excellent introductory book by Griffiths that I highly recommend.

Asked by advinUK - Thu Oct 4 12:09:39 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know, but in many situations, recycling is pointless. Your carpet is made from recycled plastic. It cost more and uses more energy to turn the bottles into fiber than just to make a brand new one. Recycling soda bottles is ridiculous because the seal used is different plastic and cant be recycled with the rest of the bottle so it costs too much to take off. Recycling is just delaying the land fill.

Asked by Jane L - Sun Oct 19 13:42:47 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Jane, I don't know if you are serious or not, but after fishing all of my life, and being an engineer, I would say that in this particular case, there's only 2 factors that matter. The first one is - when the rod is bent as far as it can without breaking, does the line touch the rod? The guides need to provide enough 'standoff' to keep the line from rubbing the pole. They could either be really tall or more of them. For something like this, trial and error is probably easier than anything else. The second factor is - does the line sag when you are trying to fish? Too few guides can make for a very annoying setup in that the line gets fouled easily, I'm guessing here, but I'd say that the major factor in placement and… [cont.]

Q. 2,400 clocks would be sold if the whole sale price is 160 dollars however if the price is reduced to 120 dollars, there would be 4800 clocks sold. assume that the relationship of the clock's price and expected units sold is linear. a.) find the mathematical model expressing the wholesale price as a function of the number of clocks sold b.) what would the price be if there is a demand of 3800 units? please show complete solution, thank you very much!
Asked by enchanted - Fri Aug 22 09:29:05 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not really an engineering question find the slope of the line created by (4800 - 2400)/(120- 160) = -60 so as the price increases the number of units sold decreases. so (4800 - 3800)/(120-x) = -60 b. x =136.667 or approximately 137 a. # of units sold = 60*(120-price of units)+4800
