What kind of matress is good for you?
Q. I really don't like my matress--it feels way too hard. I heard once that hard matresses are better for your back. Is this true? (It doesnt seem to make sense to me--shouldnt you just have what kind of matress feels best for YOU?) Also, do you guys know any stores where you can find high quality matresses for not too much money? Thanks.

A. While going through college I worked part time in a furniture store that sold mattresses. People came in all the time looking for a new mattress and everyone always thought that a firmer mattress was the best for your back. This is not true at all. Any quality mattress (Sealy, Sterns and Foster, etc) will provide support you need no matter if its firm, plush, or a pillowtop. Whatever mattress feels the most comfortable for you is the one to get. In regards to finding the cheapest mattress do not go to a store like sleepys where the salespeople are commissioned. They will mark a mattress that is only worth $1,000 at $3,000 and try to negotiate the price with you so that you think you are getting a better deal. The people who work in those… [cont.]

A. All you need to do is go to the Dollor Tree, and they sell a can of Power House brand foam deoderizer you spray on both sides, and you dont have to vaccume it afterwards unless you want to.

How do you wash out a matress after your son wets the bed?
Q. the pee soaked into the matress.. what am I supposed to do. let it dry and then put the sheets back on top after washing them? thats kinda nasty. any suggestions???

A. I would give the mattress a wipe over with a clean cloth with some strong disinfectant on it, don't have the cloth to wet but not to dry either, then if you can stand it up by an open window to dry off, and put it back onto the bed with the dryer side up, and remake it with clean sheets, hopefully that will work, maybe add a weak solution of bleach also in the water with th disinfectant

Q. I've been living in a rented property which has been infested with bed bugs, we have has the infestation treated but there are lots of stains on the matress. We are now moving out of the property and don't want to loose the secrity deposit. Any ideas how to get it out?

A. You can do a fair job of cleaning the mattress: You'll need a good cleaner...the OxyClean is a good idea but others like Bio-OX will do too. Apply to spots, wait about 5 minutes and then blot with clean WHITE towels. Press down and hold for 30 seconds to really absorb the moisture. You may need to treat again. Keep blotting until the spot is dry. You'll use a ton of white towels. If the stain remains after two washings, time for serious action. Put some clear, non-sudsy household ammonia in a clean spray bottle. Take a clean, white, absorbent cloth and dampen it with water. Heat your iron to Medium-High. Spray the stain with the ammonia. Place the dampened cloth over the stain. Iron the cloth over the stained area. Make sure to… [cont.]

A. Preventing & Removing Mattress Stains A clean mattress is the only way to sleep. A mattress saturated with water will eventually deteriorate and compound the problem with a really bad smell. Here's how to stop mattress stains before they happen and what to do if they've already happened: Don't eat or drink on a mattress. Obviously you don't want to be eating or drinking on your mattress. Even a water spill can allow moisture to infiltrate the material within the mattress, causing the deterioration of the material, mold growth, and bad smells. Don't use your mattress for a dining room table, even if you live in a dorm. Get a protective mattress pad. If you can't stop yourself from eating or drinking on your mattress, or if you have a… [cont.]

What are the disadvantages of using a steam cleaner on my bed matress?
Q. I'm subletting my furnished apartment and would like to steam clean my mattress when I return. I figured I would rent a steam cleaner from my local grocery store to deep clean my mattress. However, I read that this can cause mold. Is this true? What the best way to clean the matress/get rid of the subtenant's body odour? Thanks!
Asked by bug - Sat Feb 9 20:42:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Mattresses are not meant to be steam cleaned. It would be like peeing the bed. There's so much absorbent stuffing that you'd never get all the moisture out and the cover would be water spotted even if you did. Resolve has a new cleaner that you might use that is made for such cleaning. If the mattress is a worry, just buy a new one.

A stinky situation has happened with our new matress topper. How can I get it to not smell?
Q. OK, so we got a MemoryFoam matress for one bed, and loved it. So we got a topper for another, and the topper smells like Nair! Yuck. How can we get the smell out? I don't want to move it; it's suprisingly heavy!

A. Sprinkle either baking soda or borax on it and leave it on there for as long as possible. Vacuum it up and the odor should go away. You could spray it with Fabreeze, Oust, Ozium, OdorZout, but you risk staining it.

A. Some of these questions would be easier if you had some clue to where a person is.-- If you have local trash pickup service , you could call them and see if they would take it. Or contact your local government and ask they where it goes( why have a local government if they will not help you with anything ? ). If you have automobile , take it to local landfill or dump. All of these suggestions most likely has a fee involved , you just have to pay it. Hope this helps.

A. If space is a problem, a full should be perfectly fine if one person is using it. There's only 6 inches difference in width.

2 questions: How do I train my cat to be quiet? How do I get cat urine odor out of a matress?
Q. Our cat wakes us up every morning (sometimes at 5 am) by yelling her fool head off. Ussually she wants us to open up the patio door so she can better watch all of the animals that are starting to stir. She also begs worse than a dog, by meowing non stop, whenever anyone has food. If she's not sleeping she's meowing, even to herself in rooms where no one is around. Does anyone else have this problem and if so what did you do? 2nd Question; this same cat has used a spare matress as a litter box on more than one occasion, ussually when we are gone for a few days. I can get the stench out of the carpet, sheets and blankets but the root problem is the matress. I've tried dozens of products and nothing works. Any suggestions?
Asked by Aaron S - Wed Jul 25 15:41:11 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Vocal cats keep being vocal because their owners react. I learned this the hard way! You can't really do anything about her "talking" to herself, but in terms of her waking you up at 5:00 am, she will continue to do it as long as you keep giving her what she wants, whether it's opening the patio door or yelling at her-what she wants is attention. Even yelling at her counts. This is hard, but the best thing you can do is ignore her. Can you shut her out of the room? Or place her in a separate room at night? Give her a scratching post, a litter box and toys to keep her busy, and keep her there at night. Not giving her attention when she is literally asking for it will eventually make her see that all that meowing is not going to do… [cont.]
