how do i imitate a grill with my meats?
Q. i have an apartment, so i dont have a grill, and i love my meats! i know i can grill a steak, burger or chicken in a pan, but its just not as good as cooking on the grill. i also have a george foreman grill, but all it is is just a sloped pan so the juices drain out. i end up with really dry meat that way. does anyone have any tips for how i can cook my meat and still have it be really juicy and not crusted on the outside?

A. Well you will never 100% get that grilled flavor but you can use your stoves broiler, it's the hottest setting and is the closest heat your gonna get to an open flame, you just have to be careful because it does cook alot faster than regular oven temps. You can also buy seasonings that give you smoked flavor.

What kind of meats go well in a cheese fondue? What else besides bread would you suggest?
Q. I am new to fondues and we just bought a fondue pot. We are making a three cheese fondue and would like to know what goes well with it as far as meats and vegetables. What do you suggest and what have you done that worked well?

A. Cheese fondue is usually served with cut-up cubes of hearty breads, the type of bread depends upon the cheese in the fondue, but a good French bread works with any type of cheese fondue. Try a rye or marble bread with a cheddar cheese fondue for a different flavor combination. In addition to bread for dipping in the cheese you could try wedges of apple, slices of pear, grapes, steamed vegetables like broccoli or cauliflower, steamed asparagus spears, even pre-cooked baby potatoes. Remember the cheese will not cook anything, unlike oil fondue where you cook the meat in boiling oil. So if you want to use meat with your cheese fondue make sure it is pre-cooked. Beef goes well with a cheddar cheese or Gouda where chicken cubes go best with… [cont.]

How can I get my meats to be moist in the slow cooker?
Q. My meats always come grainy and a little dry when I use the slow cooker. The sauces and vegetables are always fantastic and the meat is basically soft...just dry and grainy - all meats, chicken, beef, pork, turkey - all!
Asked by my2boyz - Tue Jun 17 23:12:21 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Make sure you marinade them in a nice marinade for at least 30 min to an hour. You can use those preseasoned marinades or make your own making sure to use buttermilk (for chicken and pork) or vinegar. These help to break down the proteins alittle so it won't have that grainy texture. i like infused vinegars. Only a little tho and stay away from powdered meat tenderizer. It dosen't penetrate the meat enough. Use plenty of liquid in your slow cooker. I find that if you flip the meat half way thru cooking that it allows juices to get all the way in the meat.

What is the youngest a baby can try meats?
Q. My son is 6.5 months, and has been on solids (veggies and fruits) for about a month now. Is it too early to try meats and protein with him?
Asked by Mami2aLittleBalkan - Fri Nov 21 15:53:34 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, it's not too early. Meats are being given earlier today than used to be the norm. They are (contary to myth) no harder to digest than fruits or veggies, and they are a good source of iron. (Much better than the fake iron in rice cereal.) Any baby old enough for solids (6 months+) can have meat.

Is it really good to feed your dog just meats?
Q. Can they liveo n meats alone or is it better to feed them some vegetables aswell? Well we also used to eat bugs and live meat. But things have changed for the better. And we also live longer now. Wont that be the same for dogs?

A. you might not see a wolf eating carrots and cabbage, but in the wild they will eat berries and grasses. there's a lot of different opinions on what to feed dogs. they are not obligate carnivores. they are omnivores. they will eat all types of different veggies. i give my dogs dry, canned, and i make them stewed carrots, peas, hard-boiled and scrambled eggs, and sometimes brown rice a few times a week. they love raw carrots and apples too. there are tons of foods dogs shouldn't eat. garlic, onions, lg amounts of fat, pizza crust/yeast breads, baby food, unprocessed ALMONDS--as i've been reminded by another person on here. chocolate, coffee, beer, etc. to see all the foods to avoid, do a google search on toxic foods for dogs.

How do you feel about fake meats?
Q. I am vegetarian and don't like the idea of fake, boca meats or whatever they are called, because replicating dead animals is gross, they are designed to simulate meat, which is in my eyes wrong. I guess you are in a good mindset, deciding to be vego and help save the animals, but these "meats" are just imitations of dead animals flesh which are probably full of chemicals and flavour enhancers to make them taste more like the real thing.

A. You're making a good point, with the chemicals. I never tried fake meats, because I feel like I was saying to that poor chicken, "You know, actually I DO want to eat you!" Which I don't. I never liked beef and pork very much, I loved chicken but after I saw those videos I didn't love it anymore. I don't miss it at all. I'm vegan and I have to admit that I miss cheese sometimes, but when I think about what animals had to go through to get me a little piece of cheese, than I don't want to eat it anymore either. However, I think it's a reasonable alternative for people who do like meat and miss it, but just don't want animals to suffer. I don't care much about chemicals, I never got sick from anything I ate (unless it was covered with mold)… [cont.]

When starting baby foods, is it true that you should start them with meats?
Q. I have always heard veggies and fruits. A. Oh, man... I hate baby food 'rules.' They do not, on the whole, make a lot of sense, and most aren't supported by research. I plan on letting my daughter have at whatever she wants to grab as soon as she's old enough, within reasonable limits... Anyway. Some good advice from Dr Jack Newman (NB: a Canadian -- as people've pointed out, here in Canada, the 'baby food rules' are a bit different) -- "When the baby is starting to take solids at about six months of age, there is little difference what he starts with or the order foods are introduced. It is prudent to avoid highly spiced or highly allergenic foods at first (e.g. egg white, strawberries), but if the baby reaches for the potato on your plate, make sure it is not too hot, and let… [cont.]

A. Around 6 or 7 months. We started my daughter on the simple veggies and fruits (in that order) when she was 4 months. A good rule is that once they have had all the individual ingredients in something, they can have the mix. Try Beechnut if you can find it. they have REALLY good simple dinners for babies. things like Pineapple ham and Apples and Chicken...Beechnut does not have a lot of strange ingredients in them...like the Turkey Vegetable dinner is turkey, carrots, green beans, and peas. Nothing odd. Some of the Gerber stuff has an extensive ingredient list.. I saved these more complex dinners (with lots of ingredients) til she was older. But by 9 months or so, she was starting to take ground foods, so she was pretty used to… [cont.]

How long can you keep packaged lunch meats in fridge?
Q. I just bought them a couple of weeks ago...Oscar Mayer Turkey sandwich meats and Hillshire Thinly Sliced and I was just checking my fridge and the packages say use by June 22 08 and July 08 08!! So are they bad or do they last past the date on the package?
Asked by Val - Mon Jul 7 13:48:36 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If they've been opened they'll be bad by now. Only keep them 4-5 days MAX after opening them. If they havent been opened, you can open them about 4-5 days before, but dont use them past the best before day. They may be OK if they still smell ok, i would def. throw out the june 22 one even if it hasnt been opened but the july 08 one may be ok yet if it smells alright. Throw them both out if they've been opened though.

When did you start feeding your baby jared meats?
Q. He's 7 1/2 months old now. When can i start giving him meats? I thought I heard at 8 months but I can't remember. His next check up is when he is about 9 1/2 months, should I wait till then? I've given him most of the fruits and vegetables available and he's had no reactions to those. I mean the pureed meats not the other kinds for babies you buy in a jar.

A. There's some emerging research that says pureed meats are actually a good first food, so you could give them to him now, if you like. They're high in protein and iron, which are good for babies. Just make sure you wait a few days to check for any reactions or digestive upset. I never used pureed meats. I just waited until about 9 months, when my son had several teeth, and gave him tiny pieces. You should be okay to offer him pureed meats now, though. Just take it slow and follow his cues, if he resists. Edit: Here's what the LLL suggests for first foods. Meat is included:

Is it good to stop the consumption of red meats?
Q. Hello, I am thinking of the elimination of consuming red meats, and to only eat chicken and fish, anything that is not red meats. Is it healthy to stop eating red meats?, i.e Does red meat clog intestines because of fat/ is it unhealthy in any way to eat it? Thanks, please give me as much info as you know, cause I will find it helpful.

A. I wouldn't cut out red meats indefinitely. Just eat them more sparingly compared to white meats. It's also important to consider how you prepare your food altogether. By frying white meats, you're just putting yourself in merely the same situation.

Grilling bacon wrapped scallops. Any good recipes? Or other meats that are good grilled wrapped in bacon?
Q. Or sauces for these meats? I need some good Atkins friendly foods.

A. Bacon wrapped scallops: Yes, I have and I will give you the recipe. I must apologize for the delay but I can't find it. I know I do a similar thing with filet mignon. I'll tell you what I can remember because scallops cook so quickly I pre cook my bacon for the scallops until they are cooked but not crisp, still flexible. Ensure the muscle is taken off the scallop and dredge in seasoned flour then wrap the bacon around the scallop and secure with a toothpick and saute in pan preheated to medium with a little olive oil for 3 minutes on one side and one minute on the other. I cook filet mignon under the grill 4" 5 minutes one side and flip over and 3 minutes on the other.

What are some good meats to eat that will help speed up my metabolism?
Q. I remember reading an article the other day that listed some meats that help this out, but I can't remember what they are...does anyone know...I know venison was one of them, but for the life of me, I can't find a butcher that sells venison!

A. Pumpkin seeds, the secret to a high metabolism is a lot of food. To trick your body to stay that way you have to work around your body, eating a pack of seeds or anything small and nutritional over a long time in very small quantities. Pumpkin seeds worked well for me - If you have a bag you should eat one every 10 minutes over a few hours. It's annoying but works well
