Do some mechanics look down upon others because of the type of vehicles they work on?
Q. For example... Do car mechanics feel they are superior to truck mechanics? And is there a Rock Star auto mechanic position out there?
Asked by Chafemasterj - Thu Mar 6 10:30:04 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Only if there are friendly competitions out there. Being a GM, Ford Mechanic, I bash Ford even though I work on them. I bash all import mechanics. it only in fun and not serious... unless you are a specialised mechanic for "ricer" tuner shops. Most mechanics will laugh at anything gaudy and weed wacker sounding in the first place. Trucks are a different story. Stay with Domestic trucks. Better market, and you can learn about flex fuel systems, which import will never incorporate.

What happens when a mechanics lean is put on your car?
Q. I have a 2000 cherokee and it's gone into write off status on my credit. The transmission is bad, and I took it to a mechanic, and it's more than the car is worth to fix. He wants to do a mechanics lean on it. Has anbody ever had one of these?

A. Ok if the bank still has the title not you, he's second in line. The bank gets the car first, when they auction it off if they can get more than you owe for it then the mechanic gets his money or some of it. If you have the title, then I think you have so long to pay them and if not you forfeit the vehicle and the mechanic can auction the car off to get the money you owe him.

What do you learn in classical mechanics that is not included in the standard engineering mechanics courses?
Q. In other words, what does a physics major learn regarding mechanics that a mechanical engineering major either doesn't learn or need?
Asked by Stephen M - Sat Nov 25 20:34:46 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Classical mechanics courses usually cover the laws of mechanics formulated as Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. These are useful for the analysis of multi particle systems whch arise in physics (planet mechanics, plasmas, electron beams, etc) but usually fall ooutside the domain of mechanical engineering. I'm a EE but found classical mechanics to be a useful course set.

What cars do mechanics prefer to work on?
Q. I am looking to buy an older model car and I am wondering which older cars (mid 80's - 90's models), do mechanics prefer to work on? My mechanic told us a while back that he hated working on Ford Contours, which made me wonder if some cars are easier to do work to than others.
Asked by Angela C - Tue Jul 29 09:25:59 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's not necessarily a question of "easier", it's rather a question of "would you still get spare parts for your vintage model?. Everything revolves around time and money - some older model's parts are so expensive and scarce, no mechanic would like to repair them. Stick to Toyota, Opel, VW, etc, and buy on the safe side.

How difficult is STATISTICAL MECHANICS, a physics graduate level course?
Q. I am thinking of registering Statistical Mechanics this semester in my master's level. Can you please suggest me how much difficult this course would be. I have background in Statistics but not that much background in physics courses like quantum mechanics.
Asked by Anu - Fri Jan 16 22:44:24 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A graduate level course in QM is usually prerequisite to graduate level stat mech. They'll assume, for example, that you are intimately familiar with all the quantum energy levels available to a particle in a gas or a particle-in-a-box or a harmonic oscillator or a spin-1/2 system. If those terms vaguely ring a bell for you, you should review them before starting. If you haven't heard of them, don't bother with stat mech--go back and take quantum. Also, it is good (if not absolutely necessary) to have had an undergraduate stat mech course. The graduate course starts from the beginning, but moves very quickly through material most students will already have seen as undergrads.

What is the best and most up to date bicycle mechanics book out there?
Q. I am looking for the most up to date, and newest bicycle mechanics book out there. I also need a good wheelbuilding book and suspension mechanics book. All of which should be the most up to date with as much of the newest technology in them as possible. Let me know whats out there.
Asked by Casey - Mon Oct 26 12:13:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is the bible of bike mechanics... The ParkTools "Big Blue Book of Bike Repair" Wheelbuilding, there is no book that'll teach you. You really only learn by hacking your way through many unlucky wheelsets, lol. Suspension... that's going to be specific to manufacturer for any real work on suspension today. You'll find general info like changing oil and such but the specifics vary enough from unit to unit that there wont be a good "catch-all" book.

How does the mechanics lien on my car affects me?
Q. I had my car painted at Maaco. They did a horrible job: there's sand in a paint, white dots all over a car, and they also paited over rubber moldings!!! Those moldings are worth almost $500. They took 3 more days than promised to finish the job, emptied the gas tank running the car (apparently they needed the radio, because all the stations were changed). My husband picked up the car, didn't pay anything because they said they'll sand the car over. After we realized that they painted over moldings, we wanted a discount for it. They wanted to paint everything again, but the manager said they wouldn't put the original moldings on a car because they're too expensive (the car dealership gave us an estimate on all those moldings). There's no way… [cont.]

A. If they place a mechanics lein on your car, they can take your car and sell it. You might suggest to the manager that you'll be glad to discuss this with him further, but you're waiting for a return call from the District Attorney's office to discuss the matter with him.

A. A doctorate in quantum mechanics does not exist. You probably want a doctorate in physics (though you could also be thinking chemistry instead). Now, assuming physics, you can expect it to take 4 or 5 years if you are doing work in theoretical quantum mechanics. But for experimetalists, it usually takes a bit longer, so you can expect 5 to 7 years. For most of the people I know that are working in experimental quantum (including me), it took 6 or 7 years. This does not include your bachelors degree and assumes you are not getting a masters degree. A masters degree is not a typical thing to do for physicists. Usually masters degrees are for people who get 2 years into their PhD and then decide that either: 1. they don't like their… [cont.]

How can I explain Quantum Mechanics to a High School class?
Q. I have to make a report in my physics class on quantum mechanics. I need to put it in as simplest terms as possible. Can anyone help me out?
Asked by Mark J. - Mon Mar 3 06:55:02 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Explain the two slit experiment. It's weird and accessible and gets you the idea of the same thing being in two places at once. Then you can answer the paradox with the duality of light, which introduces Einstein's idea of the quanta. That also can be explained without math. Then you'll blow their minds with deBroglie matter waves. I think high schoolers would like the idea that this duality of light is there for everything, but the wave part of matter is so tight that it doesn't look like a wave unless you look very close. Uncertainty is more complicated, but interesting enough if you explain it without the math to get high school students interested. We learned the quantum mechanical model of the atom in 8th grade, but I don't know… [cont.]

What does it mean to have a mechanics lean on your house?
Q. We were not satisfied with the timely manner of getting our roof and guttering done. The roofing company is not paid in full and they are threatening a mechanics lean on our house. What does this mean for us? We recently had our roof repaired and in doing so, they stepped through and put a hole in the ceiling. They refused to fix it saying it was not their fault. Now that we are down to a little amount to pay, the roofing company wants to put a lien on our house. Can this cause foreclosure or any other problems for us? I am making payments though they are small.
Asked by Amanda N - Sat Mar 7 09:56:29 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A Mechanics Lien is a lien the company will put on your property to ensure payment at some point. Right now, the bank holds a lien on your home, meaning that when/if you sell your home, they will get paid from the money you receive from the sale before you get your money. With a mechanics lien, or contractors lien, if/when you sell your home, the money you make will first go to satisfy what you owe the bank, then if there is money left, it will go to the roofing company, then anything left will go to you. It's not a good thing because it does effect your credit and will be there until you satisfy the bill. If you are unhappy with your roof and the job they did, your best bet is to handle it in court or to keep records of all… [cont.]

Who most impacted the development of quantum mechanics and why?
Q. For one of my essays for physics we need to make an argument for which physicists were most influential in the development for quantum mechanics, summarize their contributions and compare them to another contributor, and include the historical relevance of those contributions. I have some physicists in mind: Einstein, Bohr, Schrodinger, and Planck. Any others or any expansions on those given?
Asked by Sonjers - Sun Nov 8 21:35:34 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are many physicists who helped develop quantum mechanics. Of the expanded list you have, I would think Bohr most impacted the development. He (along with Heisenberg) led the Copenhagen interpretation of QM, which is still favored by many today. See the link below.
