What is the difference between learning disability and mental health problem?
Q. I want to study mental health at university but my friends think leaning disability is better, what are advantages of studying mental health?
Asked by bushmechanic - Sun Dec 2 04:02:31 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's really up to you. You might earn more money specializing in the field of learning disabilities- because you'd be paid by school districts or families that are willing to pay thousands of dollars to test their kid (to get them special services they need, or to help them get into schools "despite" their learning disabilitiy). I personally feel that you'll make a bigger difference in the world by working with the mentally ill- because folks with major mental illness need support- but it's more challenging and usually less financially rewarding- since these programs are rarely adequately funded.

If you're a psychiatrist working in a mental hospital, how hard is it to steal drugs?
Q. I need to know for a story I'm writing. A mental institution is the setting, but it's not a book about mental wards or anything and most of it is set elsewhere. I just don't want my few introductory scenes to be extremely inaccurate. The medications I assume are kept in a pharmacy that is on the premises? Alternatively, can people write themselves prescriptions without getting caught?
Asked by Dorothea - Fri May 29 14:56:12 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With few exceptions, physicians write the orders for medication, and a nurse administers the medications. If the drugs were controlled substances, red flags go up, and the physician would be caught. (I know a few who have written Rxs for their wives and gotten caught). Controlled substances in hospitals are kept in double locked cabinets, and the keys are tightly controlled. All facilities have measures in place to prevent drugs being stolen. IT's possible, but not easy.

Any ideas for activities for individuals with mental retardation or developmental disabilities?
Q. I work in a day program with adults who have all different stages of mental retardation. We are looking for activities in which our clients can participate. We really want to get new materials so they aren't bored with the same old stuff. It can be anything from crafts, games, and community adventures. We have all levels of functioning so all ideas are welcome. Any useful websites with ideas, crafts, or anything would be greatly appreciated.
