What can I do with mercury that spilled out of a broken thermometer?
Q. I have mercury from an old thermometer of glass and it broke spilling out the mercury into a dish. I have kept it there. How can I dispose of this mercury properly and safely?

A. You may do best by calling the NON-Emergency line at your fire department and asking advice from the haz-mat person there. Do not wash it down the drain and do not allow children near the spill.

What is the connection between the planet Mercury and the element Mercury?
Q. I know that the element Mercury is definitely not comprised of the planet Mercury, so what is the connection? I am thinking it has something to do with the zodiac, but I really am not sure.

A. They are both named after the Roman god. The planet for the same reason other planets were named after gods, and the element because the god Mercury was known for speed and mobility, and the element is also called quicksilver. Oh and by the way, Mercury was a Roman god, not a Greek god.

Using 4 different mercury levels determine which organism is at the top of the Food Chain?
Q. This is a standard Grade 9 question that I would like an answer to. The answer that I have come up with is that the highest mercury level would be found in the carnivore; because the carnivore eats the herbivores, which eat the plants.

A. The top carnivore consumer at the top of the food chain.
