How do I prevent mice from getting into my apartment?
Q. I will be moving into a new apartment soon, and I was wondering: How do I prevent mice from getting into my apartment? I have experienced living in an apartment building that was infested with mice. I had to eventually get a cat, and the problem was solved. They were gone in the same week. The cat even killed a couple of them. But I have a daughter with asthma, and I have a 8-month old baby, and I can't afford to get a cat. I want to prevent the problem before it happens. Any suggestions or tricks that doesn't involve getting a cat, or dealing with traps (I have to pick them up) or poisons (my daughter found a dead one under my bed).

A. You should look for holes around your sinks, pipes and windows. Patch them up with hardware supplies (like spackle and new drywall/wood). You can also get spray that smells like fox urine that may deter the mice from entering. There are also electronic mouse repllers that you can plug into an electrical socket to emit a sound that drives them away. Some cost around $50. Also if you move your refridgerator, stove dresser, etc. out to clean behind on a regular basis, it will discourage mice from nesting. They do not like their living quarters to be disrupted. Only eat meals in one room (not a bedroom), and vaccum/sweep up every night. It worked for me. Especially the patching up holes.
