What did Michelle Obama mean when she said, "we[the Obamas] are who Americans were suppose to be"?
Q. I just can't figure out exactly what she means. Do you know? The entire transcript can be found here... Yes, Joan, you too should read the transcript, like I did. After reading the entire transcript, I still couldn't figure out exactly what she meant. Can you? Ze Pequeno, by saying we are who Americans are supposed to be, she is saying that Americans are supposed to graduate from Harvard and Princeton, make millions of dollars a year, live in multi-million dollar mansions? I work hard, but I, nor anyone in my family has come close to that standard. Does this mean I and my family are not "who Americans were supposed to be"?

It's clear: she and Barack have realized the American Dream: "I have said and will continue to say that I am absolutely proud of my country and in no other place in this country could my story be possible. I mean, that s, you know, I am here because of the opportunities that my father had, that my mother had, um, you know, we are who Americans were supposed to be." Their parents and they had opportunities that Michelle Obama thinks would be unusual somewhere else. So they both are (in her opinion) the embodiment of the American dream, just like any other successful American. It had nothing to do with race and only a race-obsessed person would find it "racist."
