Can I use a hand mixer instead of heavy duty to make buttercream icing?
Q. I do not have the money to dish out yet for a heavy duty mixer. I need to make a birthday cake and need to use the buttercream recipe. I just do not know if I can use a hand mixer instead of the heavy duty! HELP!

A. Yes, just make sure you do it correctly and don't get the buttercream mixture everywhere! Heres my recipe which i use all the time to make a great butter-icing 140g butter, softened 280g icing sugar 1-2 tbsp milk a few drops food colouring (if needed) 1. Beat the butter in a large bowl until soft. Add half the icing sugar and beat until smooth. 2. Then add the remaining icing sugar with one tablespoon of the milk. 3. Beat until creamy then add the food colouring and mix well. 4. Add extra icing sugar to thicken or a little extra milk to make more runny if necessary.

How do i install the sound mixer to my win xp operating system?
Q. I just installed my new operating system and i plugged in a philips sound system with speakers! When i try to go to the volume control it says that there is no sound mixer installed what do I do?
Asked by Vadim - Thu Jun 12 14:36:54 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Vadim... You need to install your system sound driver. If you have an installation CD for your computer, the driver should be there. If not... Get your computer model and go to the manufacturer web site and search for drivers, sound driver among them, download it and install it, your problem should be solved. If you have a cloned computer, find out what motherboard you have and with that info search (google) it. Good Luck!!

How to get good image quality from computer to video mixer?
Q. Hi. I'm planning on purchasing a video mixer soon, which has only composite and s-video inputs. I'm curious of anyway I can get good image quality to the mixer from the computer, since when I use s-video from the computer to just a TV, it looks blurry. I'm not expecting it to look perfect as a normal PC monitor does, just so the text isn't as blurry and can be read easily. My computer has both a secondary VGA output and also an s-video output.
Asked by Robin3 - Tue Mar 24 19:35:57 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. What are you trying to achieve? The best results will come by setting your screen resolution to the mixer resolution, i.e. 720x480i or 720x576i or similar depending on whether PAL or NTSC. But realistically the output from the computer will look awful on small text etc. graphics should look okay. You will need to use sans-serif fonts and large font sizes to get a decent result. You will also need to calibrate your graphics card when hooked up via S-Video, go through a colour and gamma correction setup whilst looking at the TV monitor to get best results, the standard setting for most graphics cards are way to hot for video.

When I shake a martini, sometimes the glass sticks to the mixer. Is there a trick to separate the glass?
Q. The suction that is created between the glass and the mixer is so strong sometimes, that I have to separate them by crashing the mixer on the edge of the counter. How can other people separate their glass so easy?
Asked by vonnetrip - Wed Apr 23 19:39:38 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Be careful when you insert the glass into the shaker...if you insert it crooked, it will get stuck often. If you insert it straight, it will usually not get stuck. If it does get stuck, usually using your palm to hit the shaker will loosen it up. I would avoid smacking it on a counter as the glass could break. Broken glass at a bar is a bad thing, it could get into everything.

How do I get a sound to light to work from the output of a mixer?
Q. Yes I'm still playing vinyl. Just bought a new amp and a four channel mixer but can't get the sound to light to work on any of the outputs of the mixer. Mike, CD player and decks all work through the mixer but can only get StL to work on the line-out of the decks. Thus, StL works when playing on turntables but not on mike and CD players. Help please got a gig on Friday.

A. What lights are they? Sound to light used to be built-in to the light systems i used, you did not need to connect them to a mixer. Only DMX controlled lights need a controller..

Can a pump be fitted to a bath/shower mixer?
Q. I'm planning to re-fit a bathroom and would like to keep cost down by having a bath/shower mixer (like a telephone cradle over the taps with a fitting on the wall to place shower head for a stand-up shower). Can I fit some kind of pump to this, to increase the shower pressure?

A. Yes you can, but be warned. Bath shower mixer taps always have (for want of a better word) cheap and nasty shower heads. They do not take well to boosted supplies, having been designed for low pressure operation, they do not perform as well as specific shower heads. If bath has mains pressure to cold tap, pumps CANNOT be fitted. Shower pumps are designed for gravity (tank fed) supplies. There is available a purpose designed thermostatic bath/shower mixer, it is NOT cheap, but is the absolute best when fitted correctly. Finally, bath shower mixers of the type you propose ,have no facility for hot/cold balance, many are simply on or off, giving erratic temp: control. All in all, purpose designed units are VASTLY superior. If you MUST fit pump… [cont.]

How do I undo the nut which is underneath the sink securing the mixer to the sink?
Q. I need to remove mixer as it's leaking but when I go under the sink there is no room to use either a spanner or wrench to undo the but that holds the mixer to the sink. Any hints.
Asked by Schbaz - Fri Sep 25 23:24:13 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you're referring to the faucet, then there's a special tool that you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's for that job. It's called a Faucet Nut Wrench(basin nut wrench). It'll be about 10"-12" in length with a flip head. The head will look like a spanner wrench head. It'll get into the tight space between the sink and the wall. Cost is about $10. Look in the plumbing department. Most hardware stores will have them too, but will cost a little more there.

What do you make with your KitchenAid mixer?
Q. We are being given a KitchenAid mixer as a gift. Obviously they are mixers, but I have heard that you can make just about anything with them. What is your favorite thing to make?

A. My favorite is Choc. Chip Bars which is really hard to stir by hand. I also use it to make Pumpkin Bread. It is also awsome when making Chinese Almond Cookies which is another difficult to stir item. The wisk attachment will whip egg white quick. There are many attachments you can buy that can do things like juicing oranges, grind meat. I really put mine to use during the holidays when I do a lot of baking. I have friends that are quite spoiled and have come to expect a baked item in their holiday stocking. You will love it and it will serve you well. I did not get one until I had been married about 10 years and can tell you it is a workhorse that can stir anything. If your machine does not come with a plastic collar for use… [cont.]

Why on baking a cake do you have to use a mixer but on brownies you have to stir?
Q. On the directions on the back of a box of a cake mix, they tell you to user a mixer. On the back of a brownie box they tell you to stir it. Why?
Asked by catellierruefer - Thu Jul 6 16:17:04 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The previous answers are correct about beating adding air, etc... and the fact that you can use a wire whisk on the cake and it'll be just fine, your arm may poop out but...anyway, there is also the fact that the brownie mix is much thicker and thus hard to get a mixer to flow easily through it. You can try, using a mixer won't hurt the brownies.

how to change a monobloc mixer?
Q. Im changing my monobloc mixer and Im unsure as to how the pipes are connected. I know I have to unscrew the nut underneath the sink which holds the mixer in place. Is it as simple as just removing the mixer once the nut is undone? If so have you got any tips for reassembling it?

A. You are right. Just unscrew the 10mm tails first so that they don't get damaged then remove the big nut. The unit my seem to be stuck when you try to lift it because of limescale. Before you unscrew the big nut and lift the bloc out make sure that you have everything in your new kit. Some of the kits are missing vital components like neoprene and nylon washers. You need one of each for most monoblocs. If in doubt be very careful when you remove the old one so that you can re-use a washer. When you fit the new one make sure that the taps are the right way around wrt hot and cold; also, if they're lever taps make sure that they operate in a way that suits the main user of the sink before doing anything up. It's embarrasing to get that… [cont.]

How long should we beat the cake mixture with a hand mixer ?
Q. After adding the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, how long should we mix the batter using a hand mixer ?
Asked by daisyblue84 - Wed Oct 31 11:53:47 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. At least 4 minutes. Use the highest speed on the mixer as well. the more air you incorprate, the higher the cake will rise and the more tender it will be. Muffins you beat as little as possible with a wooden spoon because you only want to blend muffins, you want to whip cake to make it light. At least thats what I learned in culinary school.

How do I fix a hand mixer that is making grinding noises?
Q. I use it mainly for baking and it makes a terrible grinding noise and the whisks don't spin very well when I am mixing something. If I take it out of the bowl, it spins and sounds fine. It will do this even if I'm mixing something that's not thick, like eggs. I bought it for $6---you get what you pay for! I was just wondering if it's a simple problem that has a quick fix. I need my mixer for the holidays!

A. see if the teeth on the gears fit snugly as you rotate them since under stress of thicker batter they'll try to dislodge and fail to mesh properly

How do you reduce feedback when recording an electric guitar through a mixer?
Q. I get a pretty annoying buzz whenever i try recording my electric guitar through my amp, through my mixer and onto my computer. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know tricks to reduce it?

A. You need to use a noise gate. These are sold as modules for a rack and also as pedals. For the sound to reach the amp, it must be at a certain level or higher. If it isn't loud enough, it doesn't go through - silence. You set the thresh hold just above the volume of the buzz, and you will never hear it again.

How much has kitchen aid stand mixer helped you in cooking and baking ?
Q. I have just received a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer from a friend as a gift and it is gorgeous. I would like to know what are some creative ways to make this machine useful at my house. (Assumming no attachment is involved, just the three beaters: flat, wire whip, and dough hook) Thanks you so much for your input!

A. I do cake decorating and make a lot of icings. You really cannot whip buttercream up light enough for decorating without a stand mixer. For all the rest of the mixing it just makes it easier to do with the Kitchen Aid than by hand. I never mix anything by hand any more. Cakes, cookies, breads, pancake batter, meringues, puddings, make cookie crumbs, graham cracker crumbs, whipped cream, ... I don't use mine for mashed potatoes though because I think it makes them too creamy, it breaks the potato fibers down too much and they taste like baby food.
