Multiplication is the mathematical operation of scaling one number by another. It is one of the four basic operations in elementary arithmetic (the others being addition, subtraction and division).

Multiplication is defined for whole numbers in terms of repeated addition; for example, 3 multiplied by 4 (often said as "3 times 4") can be calculated by adding 4 copies of 3 together:

Multiplication of rational numbers (fractions) and real numbers is defined by systematic generalization of this basic idea.

Multiplication can also be visualized as counting objects arranged in a rectangle (for whole numbers) or as finding the area of a rectangle whose sides have given lengths (for numbers generally). The inverse of multiplication is division: as 3 times 4 is equal to 12, so 12 divided by 3 is equal to 4.

Multiplication is generalized further to other types of numbers (such as complex numbers) and to more abstract constructs such as matrices.

My sister is struggling with multiplication. What are some good ways to teach her?
Q. My sister is in 4th grade and she's been trying to learn multiplication for a while now. I've tried teaching her with repitition, online games, etc. Are there any good strategies to help her remember the answers to tougher problems?

A. You can show her the trick with a number multiplied by nine. Ex. 4x9 is 36. If you put your hands out and put down your fourthfinger, you have three in one hand and six in the other which makes 36. Just teach her with fun tricks and she will know them in no time!

When should a child start learning multiplication?
Q. I'm teaching my 6 year old daughter multiplication, but I'm not sure if I should do so yet. She has already learned subtraction and addition with large numbers.

A. She's ahead of her peers. Let her decide. There is no reason to be teaching times tables, i.e., 2x0=0, 2x1=2, 2x2=4, 2x3=6..., which is a bore, but if you simply say "What is 6x7?" at breakfast, and give the answer when she doesn't know it, but repeat "What is 6x7?" as she leaves for school, and "What is 6x7" when she gets home, and on and on until it becomes a joke. The next day, try "What is 3x9?" and go on as before. About two months of this and she'll have the multiplication tables firmly imbedded with no effort and no counting on fingers.

Where can I find multiplication puzzles for kids online?
Q. I'm looking for a website that has printable multiplication puzzles such as colouring the answers in a certain colour to reveal a picture at the end. We had a photocopiable book which went walk-about but it was a fantastic way to get kids practising times tables!
