What are the origins of unusual first names?
Q. Some of my ancestors had unusual first names. I have a grandfather with the first name Flavy and a great-grandmother named Theodora Thankful. The name Flavy sounds like a short version of Flavius (a noble Roman??? Not likely in my family tree!) Some of the old names are so interesting. I have wondered if the geneology buffs on Yahoo Answers research the origin of first or given names.

How has your taste in names sophisticated over the years?
Q. My taste in names has certainly sophisticated over the years. A few years ago I adored names that were very modern and trendy. Such as Casey, Kaylee, Alyssa, Jaynette, Kimberleah, and just lately I've begun to really appreciate the beauty in names such as Mary, Elizabeth and Sandra. Names that I had previously thought where very boring. So my question to you ladies is --- How has your taste in names sophisticated over the years?

Names I used to love: Isabella Kaelyn Kelsey Avarie Liviana (although this I still think is pretty, but I wouldnt use it) Carly Names I now love: Josephine Lillian Penelope Clara Serafina Margaret Eloise (LOVE but my husband wont go for it!) I never thought I would like traditional, old fashioned names. But they are truly beautiful!

What is it with celebrities naming their children such odd names?
Q. First it was Michael Jackson naming his children Apple and Blanket, now it's Ashlee Simpson naming her son Bronx. Do celebrities think they're that much higher than the working- class people that they have to go ten notches higher with the baby names. Do they consider their children when choosing their names, and how when they grow up how their classmates and peers will taunt them? Seriously? Am I the only one that thinks this? What's your stance on it?
Asked by effdisplaynames - Tue May 26 01:46:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments

A. I would say it was because they wanted their child to stand out. Most celeb children will never be able to have a normal job like a teacher or something along those lines as they are in the media spotlight, therefore they can only really be something/someone famous. A weird name would help that quite alot I would think. Although some names are pushing it a bit i.e. Apple
