What does a clinical neuropsychologist do?
Q. I am seriously thinking about pursuing a career in clinical neuropsychology but I am not exactly clear on what they do. What do they do? Also, what degrees might you need to become one? Also, how do they differ from psychiatrists?
Asked by Abdullah - Tue May 29 19:44:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. ...A neuropsychologist mostly deals with brain injuries and the effect they have on the psychology and behavior of the patient. For example, if the brain is injured in Broca's area, how does this affect speech, and what can you do to help the patient recover normal speech behavior? You obviously need a Ph.D. in psychology, but a heavy emphasis in neurology is essential. They are quite a bit different from psychiatrists who are basically MDs who specialize in brain chemistry and human behavior and see treatment as a medication decision.

How can I become a neuropsychologist?
Q. Would I need to study Psychology at Uni, or Neuroscience? Thanks.
Asked by Roisin - Wed Jun 10 06:59:40 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Clinical neuropsychology is the study of brain behavior relationships. Clinical neuropsychologists are doctors who often work in hospital settings in an interdisciplinary medical team or in private practice. Like other professional psychologists, neuropsychologists have completed a doctorate in psychology, postdoctoral training, and have passed state and national boards in order to become licensed. Neuropsychologists have completed training in the neurosciences in addition to doctoral training in professional psychology. Training typically takes 8 or more years past the undergraduate degree in psychology. Neuropsychologists usually possess a Ph.D., or more rarely the Psy.D. degree.

A. A psychology major would be a help, but don't forget the important science classes that are often not part of a psych degree. Neurology is a tough science, so you will need a good background in biology, chemistry, genetics, organic chem, immunology, etc. Those classes are usually part of a biology, biochemistry, or chemistry degree. You may want to consider a double major. You could also check the course requirements and prerequisites of the masters and Ph D programs in neuropsych. You are aiming very high -- congratulations. Best of luck.

A. You ahve been getting the wrong answers. A NP does psychiatric evaluations for competency. S/he performs a 4 hour set of tests on a person to determine if that person is physically, mentally, and emotionally competent to handle life's pressures and everyday decisions. They do not do therapy, and specialize in and skilled in this form of testing.

A. A psychologist is a PhD. A psychiatrist is an MD. So, a neuropsychologist is a PhD. However, neurologists and neuropsychiatrists are more common. Take the medical careers course- you have years before you have to make a 100% decision.

i want to be a clinical neuropsychologist...where can i go to college?
Q. anywhere in the us would be great!
Asked by C R R - Sat Jun 2 16:43:21 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just about anywhere really. To get that level of specialization though, you will definitely need to go to graduate school for Psychology. You could also go to grad school for Neuroscience, and specialize from there. I have even heard of a clinical NEUROpsychologist--but I would think this would have a more neuroscience aspect to it than regular psychology. If you tell me what the job description is exactly, I might be able to help you more. As far as top psychology programs go: Stanford University, University of California--Berkeley, University of Michigan--Ann Arbor,Yale University, Harvard University, Princeton University (NJ) ...in that order pretty much. Good luck!

A. I would have thought Psychology (BSc rather than a BA which would be more scientifically basis) or Neruoscience. I know that Nottingham University had a 4 year Neuroscience course many years ago... I beleive that as a Neuroscience you would definately be earning 40k plus a year. You would need to study Biology, Chemistry at A level with Psychology just as a background choice A Level.

How many years of College do I need to become a Psychiatrist?
Q. How much does a Psychiatrist make per year? Also, if you had to choose between being a NeuroPsychologist and a Psychiatrist, which would you choose?
Asked by Chris F - Sat Jan 26 22:07:21 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A psychiatrist is a type of MD. They prescribe medicine to the mentally ill. This is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist. Meaning, you will need a bachelors degree (typically 4yrs) and then attend a medical school (another 4yrs) You will also need to complete some form of an internship called a residency(3-10yrs) To become a psychologist however, I've heard that you need a masters degree and I've also heard you need a docterets degree. I would think you only need a masters, though. If I could choose between the two, I would be a psychiatrist. You get to have a wider range of mental illnesses to work with :] Hope this helped!
