A. First off...do a spell check. If you're going to do nuclear-anything, learn how to spell...ok? It's "Engineering". Nuclear physics is the science, study, and/or characterization of particles and interactions at the nuclear level. The top dog of nuclear. Nuclear engineering is the building, practical use and utilization of nuclear related phenomena. In other words, the nuclear physicists discover various properties and laws regulating nuclear interactions, and then give it to the engineers and say...'no go figure out a use for ir'. Sorry to sound so flippant about it, but this is the hierarchy of things. The engineers are the ones who find a use for what the scientists come up with. Should Nobel Prizes have been awarded in nuclear physics?
Q. In his will, Alfred Nobel stated that the prizes should go to those who benefited humanity in some (tangible?) way. I don't recall the exact wording, but I encourage you to look it up. Does that mean that nuclear physics, which has as main impact produced the nuclear bomb, should have been excluded?

A. That is not the only application of Nuclear physics. I would say that the main applications would be for medical use, in the generation of power and archeology (carbon dating) where the principals of nuclear physics are applied every day. Those are indeed tangible benefits.. don't you think?

How does a Nuclear Physics researcher get funding?
Q. I want to know the process whereby someone with a theory on Nuclear Energy would go about getting funding from all sources, Academic, Governmental, etc.
Asked by John F - Fri Apr 11 15:28:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm not exactly sure, but I'm guessing... They would get in touch with a notable school like Cambridge, tell them about the theory at a meeting, talk about its potentials, write a paper, edit it, publish the paper, then contact a nuclear research program, talk with its supervisors, have a meeting, write a proposal to congress to allow the state to undergo research, and then approve it, and then contact whoever is needed e.g. architects, construction people, physicists, organize and draft a plan, get funding from the government through another proposal through congress, have it approved, then recieve the money, then start research. The SSC accelerator halted its construction after it lost its funding in the 1990s.

How does Particle Physics relate to any subject studied in Chemistry (including Nuclear physics)?
Q. Doing a ppt presentation. 40% of the ppt must relate to Chemistry. How do I do that if im doing something on particle physics?!! A quick answer would be nice!

A. Atoms are pieces of the thing Chemists love. Physicists admire the internal junk. The valence is how Chem students observe the quantum nature. Particle physics is related by the "touching" of atoms.

How do I find the amount of fuel needed to burn everyday in this nuclear physics question?
Q. I need to find the number of kilograms of coal, oil, and natural gas that must be burned each day to operate a 3000-MW thermal power plant, which consumes 4 kg/day of uranium-235. The heats of combustion of the three fuels (in kJ/g) happens to be, respectively, 32, 44, and 50. I keep getting a wrong answer. I think it may be units. I would really appreciate it if you could show me a correct answer. Thanks so much!

A. E = MC^2 E = 4 kg * (3 * 10^8 m/s)^2 E = 4kg * 9 * 10^16 m^2/s^2 E = 3.6 * 10^17 kg - (M^2/s^2) 1 J = 1 kg-m/s^2 * 1 meter = 1 kg-m^2/s^2 ===> Plant uses 3.6 * 10^17 J of energy per day ===> 3.6 * 10^14 kJ/day ===>36 * 10^13 kJ/day 36/32 = 1.125 1.125 * 10^13 g of coal ===> 1.125 * 10^10 kg coal At least I think that is what you asked. Your question is not clear.

A. Other factors play a role other than the intelligence of a person when learning nuclear physics or radiochemistry. The desire to learn those subjects is also important in how well a person will learn. If you're not interested in learning about them, then you're not going to get far. They're both difficult subjects and one can get easily disillusioned with their complexity. A person has to put in an adequate amount of time and effort to learn. Also, it depends on who is teaching the subject. The teacher has to know the subject thoroughly and be able to explain it in a manner in which the student will understand. A teacher who is genuinely concerned with whether or not the student is learning and understanding (and who is an expert in… [cont.]
