How do you calculate the degree of openness? (Macroeconomics)?
Q. In effort to understand a particular question in one of my macroeconomics class, I have researched many places, but waht is the equation for degree of openness? Is it imports + exports divided by two? Just the average of imports and exports? OR Is it imports + exports divided by 2 and then that number divided by the GDP of that particular economy? Thank you. A. Average of imports and exports does nto take into acount he size of the economy. Hence a better measure would be to (X+M)/GDP. Whetehr you divide by 2 is not that imporatnt as it would just be a scalar transofrmation, and degree of transformation ranking would not be affected. Hope that helped.
