Q. Explain what type of vector operations can be used in what type of polar coordinate plots? Asked by medicine man - Tue May 2 17:46:52 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. Assuming that you are familiar with 2-dimensional rectangular (Cartesian) vectors, (x,y) axes, then the polar coordinates are given by r=(positive)square root of (x^2+y^2), and theta=the angle whose tangent = y/x, where r is the length of the vector and theta is the direction of the vector with respect to a given reference direction. Addition and subtraction of vectors are simpler in rectangular coordinates while multiplication and division of vectors are simplified by transforming to polar coordinates. Polar coordinates are even simpler if radians are used for the angles instead of degrees.
