In biology, an organism is any living thing (such as animal, plant, fungus, or micro-organism). In at least some form, all organisms are capable of response to stimuli, reproduction, growth and development, and maintenance of homeostasis as a stable whole. An organism may either be unicellular (single-celled) or be composed of, as in humans, many billions of cells grouped into specialized tissues and organs. The term multicellular (many-celled) describes any organism made up of more than one cell.

The terms "organism" (Greek ὀργανισμός - organismos, from Ancient Greek ὄργανον - organon "organ, instrument, tool") first appeared in the English language in 1701 and took on its current definition by 1834 (Oxford English Dictionary).

Scientific classification in biology considers organisms synonymous with life on Earth. Based on cell type, organisms may be divided into the prokaryotic and eukaryotic groups. The prokaryotes represent two separate domains, the Bacteria and Archaea. Eukaryotic organisms, with a membrane-bounded cell nucleus, also contain organelles, namely mitochondria and (in plants) plastids, generally considered to be derived from endosymbiotic bacteria. Fungi, animals and plants are examples of species that are eukaryotes.

More recently a clade, Neomura, has been proposed, which groups together the Archaea and Eukarya. Neomura is thought to have evolved from Bacteria, more specifically from Actinobacteria.

What are four ways an ectothermic organism's behavior helps it regulate temperature?
Q. I am working on bio lab 10, and I couldn't get the answers to the following questions. 1) why does temperature affect heart rate in ectothermic organisms? 2) Discuss what results you might obtain if you repeated this experiment using an endothermic organism. 3) Describe at least four ways an ectothermic organism's behavior helps it regulate its temperature. I really need an A on this lab. please help.

A. Oh Man, I remember this lab in AP Bio... I also went to the internet for help. Let's see, for number two, an endothermic organism does not rely on it's environment to regulate it's temperature as much as an ectotherm, So, the results would be a lot less 'drastic'. "The metabolism of an organism is closely tied to its temperature. Within a narrow range of temperatures to which an ectothermic animal is tolerant, the metabolic rate increases with an increase in temperature and decreases with a decrease in temperature. As the temperature rises, ectothermic animals become more active, within limits, and as it falls, they become more sluggish and lethargic. This certainly restricts the habitats these animals can inhabit because they are always… [cont.]

How do you know wheather a organism photosynthesized or respired?
Q. We did a cricket lab in class. I have to tell which organism photosynthesized and which respired. How can I determine that?
Asked by vballgirl - Thu Mar 19 20:10:44 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All organisms respire. plants photosynthesize. photosynthesis uses light to convert CO2 into sugar. Respiration produces CO2. So the organism that photosynthesizes makes less CO2.
