Themes are usually revelations during the book or something that the main character learns. Without the rising action and climax, the character wouldn't face any problems that would lead them towards any conclusions. The characterization is what sets everything in motion. Everything that happens is because of the characters. The theme is usually developed because of a characters view/ personality, or the changes they under go after facing a certain problem.
