What are the chances I would be considered for Oxford University?
Q. I'm an Australian (but I lived in London and the Netherlands for a while when I was a kid) and I have always wanted to go to Oxford and study History and Politics. I get good grades at my school, I've been awarded four academic excellence schollarships, and several academic excellence awards - but I'm not the smartest person at my school. I'm really interested in history and politics, and I was wondering if any Oxford allumni would be able to say whether or not I would have a chance at being accepted, and have any advice for the application and interview process? Thanks!

A. I harboured such ambitions too, but I might just end up doing my postgrad there. From what I hear, you have a good case. Just my opinion. I mean, look at all those awards! So what if you're not the one smartest at your school? If Oxford only recruited the one smartest kid from every college in their near vicinity, they wouldn't be able to stay open long for lack of funds, right? (My assumption. heh.) Good luck, no harm in applying.

What is the academic life at Oxford like? Which colleges are considered to be the easiest and hardest?
Q. I'm considering studying abroad at Oxford. However, I want to go to a top law school and know I need a great GPA. I currently have a 3.9 at a top school in the U.S but am afraid that the grading will be much more difficult at Oxford and my GPA will be negatively impacted by studying at Oxford.
Asked by Curious Student - Tue Nov 4 12:23:12 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. In terms of academics, Oxford is a top-notch college, and you will have to work incredibly hard to keep your grades up. In terms of the people who attend oxford, they tend to be pretentious, over-privileged people who tend to be odious of Americans. But your call.

Q. Im uniform shopping for my son whos going to preschool. He needs a white long sleeved shirt. Whats the difference between classic and oxford. Is one nicer or comfier. Thanks.

A. Its the same thing, just have your son try on either type and see which one is more fitting for him. Classic and oxford are just names people use when naming dress shirts. Oxford shirts are another word for dress shirt.

How much does Oxford cost (USD) and what do I need to do to get in?
Q. I'm planning which colleges to apply to and certain parental units are demanding "best education for cheapest cost" decisions. How much is Oxford, which one of it's colleges is best for a History degree, and what do I have to do to get in? I'm also looking at McGill in Canada, Georgetown, Columbia, and NYU in the States.
Asked by aries - Sun Apr 26 20:10:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Since Oxford is a British uni and they have an entirely different program (A-Levels, Sixth Form, let's not get into it) to some degree it's hard to compare. There's no definite GPA you need, because Oxford looks at A-Level scores. You can figure that you need for Oxford what you need for Harvard. 3.75 and above, preferably 3.8 or more. What you need is AP scores. Since in Britan, students take a year of "sixth form college" (which for us would be somewhat like Freshman year or International Baccalaureate or a full year of AP courses) American students must have either an IB diploma, 3 AP test scores, or a year of college. To get into Oxford, the 3 AP scores you submit would need to be 5,5,5. They do sometimes admit students with 5,5,4,… [cont.]

How do I contact Oxford University from Canada?
Q. I am currently in grade 10, and am interested in attending Oxford University in the future, in the physics department. I wish to phone them and ask them about their policy regarding grade 13 final marks, the required G.P.A or grade average needed for acceptance. If you know either a phone number where the university can be reached from, or the answers to my inquiries, it would be heavily appreciated. And please, no people commenting on how 'I still have so much time to decide which university I want to attend' because trust me, I know.

A. Well seeing as you needed to use Yahoo Answers to find this out I doubt you will get in but here: Oxford University is an extremely prestigious university, so unless your grades are in the high 90's (at least 95 for each), you have over 100 hours of community service, and your family is willing to pay ~$100,000-$400,000 for you to go there and live there + air fare + food etc... then I doubt you will go. If you are in the central provinces I recommend you go to U of Toronto, Waterloo, or McGill, if you're in the west then either U of Alberta or UBC are good, and if you are in the east then Mount Allison and Dalhousie are rather nice. Good luck in your continuing studies.

What are the good addresses to have tea and scones in Oxford?

A. Just sit and enjoy, Afternoon Tea is always better with Company and there is lots of that at Magdelan. I think it's an absolute hoot how the President of College explains the benefits of Magdelan on the web site. "Magdalen has excellent facilities and participation by our students in extra-curricular activities is strongly encouraged". Typical Menu and place to go and ruminate is The Old Parsonage, its only 349 years old so wasn't there when Magdelan was founded. old parsonage hotel , 1 banbury road oxford ox2 6NN 01865 310210 They do a few different types of special Teas, as follows: afternoon tea very high tea 14.95 A Choice of Finger Sandwiches: Cream cheese, Chives & watercress, Egg mayonnaise & anchovy Jersey crab & cucumber, [cont.]

What is the best way to apply to Oxford University?
Q. When should you apply? What do you write in your personal statement? Should you go to Open Days? What is Oxford life like? ... hopefully someone will be able to answer these questions with any additional information about Oxford! Thanx a bunch.

A. The deadline for Oxbridge (and medicine) is October 15th in the year before you intend to apply. If you are hoping to apply for a deferred place, be aware that Physics and Maths tutors do not like this as your maths will go rusty in your gap year. You'll also have to convince the tutors that you would be good enough even if next year's pool of applicants turned out to be quite strong. You apply via UCAS like you would with other UK universities. You'll also have tor send off an Oxford Application Form (OAF) around that time as well. You can download the OAF from their website I think, but your school will probably have some copies so ask your teachers. Depending on your subject you might have to send off some sample essays. If you do… [cont.]

A. Oxford university is a top world renowned university, and one of the best universities in the UK. and has coughed out many authors yes oxford was generally classed as the litrature uni while cambridge a science one but they are both really good in general ranking in the top ten for most subjects. Durham is also a good university for english it is ranked 1 for english in some league tables. (scroll to academic) with the reputation of both these universities entry into them is difficult. with them both most probably asking you for 3 A's. with the average student at oxford probably having around 4 or 5 A's (some with 6) and durham with 3-4 A's
