Trousers are an item of clothing worn on the lower part of the body from the waist to the ankles, covering both legs separately (rather than with cloth stretching across both as in skirts and dresses). English-speakers in areas such as Canada, South Africa and the United States often refer to such items of clothing as pants. Additional synonyms include slacks, kegs or kex, breeches (sometimes pronounced /ˈbrɪtʃɨz/) or breeks. Historically, as for the West, trousers have been the standard lower-body clothing item for males since the 16th century; by the late 20th century, they had become prevalent for females as well. Trousers are worn at the hips or waist, and may be held up by their own fastenings, a belt, or suspenders (braces). Leggings are form-fitting trousers of a clingy material, often knitted cotton and lycra.

How come that jeans/pants that you buy new are always to long? Any ideas about altering them?
Q. I am 5'7, and taller than a lot of women my age. I wear either a 7 or 9, depending on the cut of the jeans/pants. But here lately, I don't care what brand it is, or style, or whatever - it never fails that they are always to long. Example: I bought some pants from Old Navy just last week and the size was 7 Short. But this morning when I went to wear them, they weren't short!!! And, it drove me nuts all day, dragging the cuff of my pants around. I mean, I don't mind some cuff around my feet but dragging half the leg of the pant --- drives me insane. I have cut the ends off for years, and worn the cuffs ragged with no seam/hem (??) (hope you know what I mean.) BUT, that is so old and I refuse to do that anymore - so, now what? I have seen… [cont.]

A. I feel you. I am also 5'7" and wear a size 28 (or a 6) and everything is too long. I am told by my infinitely more fashionable baby sister that it is to accomodate high heels. Well, three kids into my life, heels and jeans are not words I use in the same sentence. Higher end shops like Indigo will hem the jeans they sell. You can also get most upscale cleaners to do this type of alteration. Its like the hems got longer as the waists got lower. I just want my old Levi's back - the ones that I could bend over in and not moon the world:) Just FYI - sometimes I find things at Old Navy not to be sized completely consistently. You might try on two or three pairs of the same jeans in your size and buy the ones that fit the best.

What color pants would look good with a baby blue shirt and a silver tie?
Q. I have a job interview tomorrow, and I need some fashion advice. I have matched a silver tie with pink and white stripes to a baby blue shirt. They look great together. Do I need to wear blue pants, or would another color look good with that shirt/tie combination?

A. Hi there, Black, Navy, Gray or White would look great. You don't need to wear navy/blue pants it's optional really. just mix and match. Great add of pink by the way. :) Natalie

How do I make the waist on my vintage pants larger?
Q. I just bough a vintage pair of pants that have a 3" band/button section before the seam that includes the zipper. It looks like a built in 3" belt basically. The pants under the "belt" fit, but the "belt" part is too tight. How can I alter the belt part to make it fit? If I removed the belt part entirely the pants would never work, and would hold up.

A. You could try moving the buttons on the "belt" part closer to the edge to give you a little more room. I don't know how tight it is on you...I'll keep thinking for you though ;) I just thought of something else, if you remove the belt part and take it apart at the side seams and then sew a piece of another fabric (coordinating or contrasting) to the side seams of it, then sew it back to the pants...or if you use the belt part as a pattern and make another waistband for your pants out of fabric that coordinate with your pants.
