What are your options for factoring if the parentheses don t match?
Q. What are your options for factoring (by grouping) if the parentheses don t match?
Asked by Courtney - Fri Jun 19 01:25:16 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, just try rearranging the terms in the polynomial... it works sometimes eg; for x^3 + 3x^2 +6x + 5 you can try (x^3 + 3x^2) + (+6x + 5) or (x^3 + 5) + (3x^2 +6x) or some other combination... *OR, if that doesn't work* Lets say you have the polynomial 2x^3 - 4x^2 + x - 2 It will probably work with grouping, but you can do it in another way. First try to find one zero, by plugging in random numbers for "x", find one that makes the entire thing equal to zero. (There was some rule for choosing the numbers, but I forgot it :P) So in this case I try x = 2 2x^3 - 4x^2 + x - 2 2(2)^3 - 4(2)^2 + (2) - 2 x = 2 is a factor (x - 2) So now must find the other factors. You have (x - 2) / (2x^3 - 4x^2 + x - 2) You can use… [cont.]

What does it mean when you have an amount in parentheses?
Q. I ordered a phone thriough Sprint online and it said I could charge it to my Sprint account. However, it is asking for a credit card number, but the amount is in parentheses. Does this mean it will show up on the credit card or my Sprint account. I do not want to be charged twice.
Asked by holla back - Wed Mar 11 13:42:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually this means the amount is a credit. In other words if the amount is ($10.00), that means you overpaid $10,00 and they owe you this amount. I would look at the bill again and see if this makes sense. Ask Sprint if you are unsure. I am almost positive this is a credit.

How do you cite a quote from the Dalai Lama in parentheses?
Q. Do you have the text with Gyatso in parentheses or something else?
Asked by British Steel - Thu Apr 30 19:35:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you were quoting something he said you would use parenthesis. For example, the Dalai Lama said thank you very much for inviting me you would say like this "thank you very much for inviting me". The Dalai Lama said "thank you very much for inviting me". There are different rules for longer quotes and does the period go inside the parenthesis or outside? Never could remember. His name itself however you would not put in quotes unless someone has used it in a quote. For example: The Dalai Lama is also known by the name of Tenzin Gyatso. Mrs. Smith said to in reply "the Dalai Lama is also known by the name of Tenzin Gyatso."

Where should I place the parentheses and commas when listing articles?
Q. I am listing articles in my sentence and don't know where to put the parentheses and commas. For ex: I love the articles "hello", "hello again", and "hello one more time." Am I using the commas correctly here? If you don't know, is there another way to write this? I was thinking of italisizing the names, but I think that might only apply to book titles.
Asked by SugarBaby - Thu Feb 15 10:31:14 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think you're right, italics apply to magazine articles, because book titles are underlined. on the punctuation note, the commas go inside the parentheses, not outside. other than that you're ok

How do I deal with exponents outside of parentheses in order to solve for X?
Q. I may not have explained what I'm confused about quite correctly in the top part: When I have a problem, such as (4-x^3)^5, how do I solve for X? I should have been a bit more clear. I apologize. The entire thing is equal to y, and the goal is then to solve for X.
Asked by bump126 - Sun Jul 27 02:02:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know exactly, because you don't have an equation here, just an expression. If you create an equation by saying, let's say, (4 - x^3)^5 = 0 then you can solve it straightforwardly. Take the 5th root (raise to the power of 1/5) both sides: (4 - x^3) = 0 Then as usual, solve: add x^3 to both sides 4 = x^3, so x = 4^(1/3) = the cube roots of 4. Does that help somehow?

How do you auto format italics inside parentheses (XP: Microsoft Word 2003; Mac: 2007)?
Q. To auto format italics in Word, you begin and end text with underline. But it seems beginning with parentheses deactivates this (same goes for asterisk -> bold). Anyone know how to change this?
Asked by Tres T - Tue Oct 14 14:20:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You're right! I don't use _-_ and *-*, so I never noticed this. When I tried it just now, it did indeed not work. A little playing around (leaving a blank between the ( and the _, to be specific) leads me to conclude that the scanner isn't keying on just the _ or *, but also the character before it. (_ apparently doesn't qualify, but ( _ does. The blank makes the difference. I doubt there's an option to change this, though. You could try switching to Word's CTRL/I and CTRL/B keystrokes instead of using the old Internet convention of underscores and asterisks. Hope that helps.

what do you do with parentheses in a chemical formula when balancing?
Q. im not completely sure and im in a rush so could someone tell me.
Asked by HS - Sat Jan 10 14:30:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ok, here is the example, Fe2O3 + H2SO4 = Fe2(SO4)3 + H2O There are 3 parts of SO4 on the right side, so you'll need to have 3 So4 on the left Fe2O3 + 3H2SO4 = Fe2(SO4)3 + H2O now the amounts of Fe and SO4 are equal in both parts 2 for Fe and 3 for SO4. there are 6H on the left (3x2) and only 2 on the right, so adding 3 to H2O Fe2O3 + 3H2SO4 = Fe2(SO4)3 + 3H2O And a small tip: always calculate oxygen atoms(if any) in the end of balancing. This will check whether you did your balancing correctly.

Q. I know what the present tense & the perfect tense are but what does it make when combined? does it really exist!? & what on earth is a parentheses? sounds like an illness! Asked by Polka Dot - Sat Jan 27 14:30:52 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The present perfect tense is the 'basic' form of the perfect tense and undoubtedly what you already consider the 'perfect tense'. In German the present perfect tense is formed by using an auxiliary verb ('haben' or 'sein') and the past participle. For example, the present perfect tenses of your two sentences are: 'Du bist immer gut gewesen' (from 'Du bist immer gut') 'Ich bin ins Theater gegangen' (from 'Ich gehe ins Theater') In most cases 'haben' is used as the auxiliary. 'sein' is used only where a verb implies motion and there is no direct object. There are also a handful of verbs that always take 'sein' as their auxiliary (e.g. 'bleiben', 'geschehen', 'werden', 'steigen', 'gelingen'). As for a parenthesis (plural: parentheses), as… [cont.]

A. I think I've seen it used to explicitly state an idea that's implied in what precedes it. The rather portly gentleman (read: fat slob) chewed his food noisily. It's telling the reader to 'read' or interpret the word "portly" as "fat slob".
