What do you think about Penn Foster's electrical engineering certificate for learning the basics?
Q. Going back to a brick and mortar school is just not an option for me right now and I need to learn the basics so that I can understand the textbooks and materials from the MIT OpenCourseWare programs. Is Penn Foster an OK place to get the basics? (They advertise that learning the basics is the most important part). What makes you think I have those skills to review? Penn Foster uses the step by step approach that works best for me. My question is more about the accuracy of the information I will be learning.

A. While I am not familiar with the Penn Foster program, I can tell you that most libraries offer textbooks that would be as accurate as you would want for learning these basics. It sounds like you are trying to evaluate whether or not to pay for such materials/access. I'd recommend not. You obviously have at least some access to the internet, and a great wealth of information is available there for free. You have access to systems like this one to ask 'experts' what questions you may not be able to answer for yourself through such study. Regarding 'the basics', I'd recommend the book "Basic Electronic", by Grobb. You should be able to get it through inter-library loan if it's not already at your local library. This book requires about… [cont.]

How marketable is a degree from Penn Foster college?
Q. I'd like to take online classes, specifically to be a medical office assistant. That's where you are trained to do office procedures like billing & coding, scheduling, etc., but also can assist the doctor and take patient histories. Penn Foster has a program for this. But how does PF look on a resume? Am I better off taking classes through another institution?
Asked by rhettsmum2006 - Wed Oct 15 15:17:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Not sure about the medical office assistant dipolma or degree (if there is one)...But as far as Billing and coding goes...don't get burned...I highly doubt that school is accredated by AHIMA. If not, you will not be able to be registered or certified as a coder...bascially meaning it will be hard for you to get a well paying job in the field...Good Luck and google somethings before you sign anything!!!

Can a person actually get a job with a degree from Penn Foster or other correspondence school?
Q. I am wanting to take get a degree in Paralegal studies, and I want to do it now. I am tired of waiting for college to start and everything that is required to go to a 2 year or 4 year college. I just don't want to pay all the money and then not be able to get a job. Is it possible to get a job after getting a degree from Penn Foster, or other institutes like Penn Foster? I have a loan in rehabilitation and can't get financial aid right now and can't afford tuition for a brick and mortar college.
Asked by April D - Thu Apr 23 11:39:29 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Penn Foster will not get you a job. It isn't accredited or looked at positively in the professional work force. It is a scam. I worked with someone who looked into suing them to get her money back because when she finished no one would hire her. No One. Try to find an accredited on line college or just go to a traditional class room for the degree.

Penn Foster highschool diploma makes it harder to get accepted?
Q. I'm applying to UCF (University of Central Florida) in March. I have good grades, but I used Penn Foster homeschooling online to get my high school diploma. Do colleges accept Penn Foster? Or is it harder to get into college with a homeschooled diploma?

A. It shouldn't be harder since Penn Foster's High School Diploma is both nationally and regionally accredited.

Is Penn Foster's Vet Assistant program really credible with veterinarians?
Q. Hi! I am currently taking the Veterinary Assistant course through Penn Foster. I was wondering if a hiring veterinarian would look at that as a certifiable program and consider it as credible education or not since it is distance learning? If any Veterinarians could let me know as well that would be fantastic!! Thanks so much!
Asked by Calli Joe - Thu Nov 8 15:53:48 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is not an answer, but please note that you've posted this question in the "education" category, and I doubt that any veterinarians hang in this category. Perhaps a category about veterinary medicine will be more appropriate; and in any case - if I would have been in your position, I would have asked vets I know (or even vets from my area I don't know); they could give you helpful career advice in any case and you might also make good contacts to have a job of some sort there.

What are your thoughts on Penn Foster College?
Q. Would you say that their ONLINE diploma/degree programs are a waste of time and money? I'd prefer well-thought answers from experienced or knowledgeable people, including current or previous students. I'm about to finish up my Veterinary Assistance course with Penn Foster, but still am not sure if it's a good 'thing' or not. I've been thinking of signing up for another course, but at the same time I'd like to avoid spending the money if it's not worth it. Thanks!

I am planning on taking the pharmacy technician course at Penn Foster. Is it worth the money and time?
Q. I am interested in the pharmacy technician course at Penn Foster and wonder if anybody who is taking it or took the course before can give me a heads up on what to expect. Is it worth the time, money and effort. And how much does it cost for the whole course? After taking the course, are you eligible to work in the pharmacy department?
Asked by vitaly5887 - Tue Jul 22 20:19:34 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Find out what your state requires. You should be able to find this information through your state pharmacy licensing board. Or, just ask a tech at your local pharmacy what they had to do. Most places require you've taken and passed a pharmacy tech course and passed the CPHT exams. Some states also require you to be licensed in their state. I have worked in AZ, NM, AK and TX. After 18 years, the most I ever made was $12/hr.

How will current high school credits switch over if I were to start Penn Foster?
Q. Hi, I'm halfway through my junior year and am really leaning toward starting the Penn Foster High School program, and I just want to know how my previous credits would be affected (if they'd still count, or if I'd have to take classes over again), and if I'd have to pay full tuition or just part of it since I've already taken a little more than two years of regular highschool. Any help would be great in the regard.
Asked by viewtifuljoe332000 - Sun Jan 13 10:23:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I know that the credits you earn will not be dropped. They will stay on your transcript and will show how many credits you have completed. I am not sure how you show Penn Foster that you have those credits, but I am sure if you call their phone number (help line?) They can help you with that... Good luck!

A. Penn Foster has interest-free financing options available. Have you talked to an Enrollment Advisor? I would look into that before applying for a loan that bears interest. Your payments are made monthly and you can have them drafted right from your checking/savings account or put directly onto a credit card. You have plenty of options ... I would check with PF before doing anything else.

A. I'm currently taking the vet technician course, and I can honestly say it is by far the best program I've ever taken in my entire life. I went to college for 4 years to be a graphic designer, then decided not to do graphic design so I enrolled in the vet techinician course. Let me tell you I absolutely love it. All your books and everything get sent right to you, theres always online help, great forums, great people to help you along the way. I would definitely recommend it.

What are your ideas on Penn Foster College and trade degrees?
Q. I have been working on diesel engines for a while now but I don't have any degree or certification. I have heard that Penn Foster isn't really helpful when it comes to professional degrees like education but what about the trades?...anyone?
Asked by Ire - Mon Jan 26 08:51:28 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can get your diesel certification at most community colleges, for fairly low cost. CCs are also entirely reputable, and appropriately accredited. The diesel training courses tend to be fairly short, so you won't have to spend too much time there in order to get the certificate you need. Penn Foster - the problems there are that the school doesn't have a good rep, and it's not appropriately accredited. I'd be afraid that you'd spend your money there, and end up with a worthless piece of paper. I'd rather you spend more and go to a reputable automotive/diesel trade school that's local to you. If you've been working on diesel engines for a while, you probably know others who are working in the industry, and local to you. Ask them… [cont.]

How about Penn Foster's Home remodel and repair program?
Q. I have an old house that needs a lot of repair work. I have to do it by myself because of the budget. However, I have not any basic ideas of doing such work. The Penn Foster provides the program to teach you how to do the home repair from the scratch. However, I doubt if it works by learning online because such kind of training needs a lot of practice and mentoering. Did anyone take this program before? How about it? Any reply is appreciated.
Asked by JOE - Sat Feb 7 11:02:56 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not sure if every person can learn to do home repairs from the internet, but I have spent my life building my own houses, running my own businesses, and doing many other things, and almost all of the information has been learned from books, libraries, and now the internet. I think the internet is best of all. I suppose it's nice to work with a mentor, but I've rarely done it. I've learned to do my own wiring, my own plumbing, drawn houseplans, etc., all from information I read. I don't think you need to pay any money for any of these things if you're willing to put your own time in to learn instead. Increasingly, the world is there to help you, just like on YA. With the internet, we're all willing to help each other, or at least… [cont.]
